And , of course, there is the grandaddy of all fronts for spy organizations; "Universal Exports" in the James Bond Novels.

Kinda related to the Hidalgo Trading Company that was used as a warehouse front hiding all of Doc Savage's airships, subs and other adventure cars autogyro, etc that he used.

That was created in 1933. When those pulp books started to publish.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean; most CTs aren't about the actual ideological aims, whatever they are, to the believers. They're about ego assurance, believing they're special and have knowledge not available to the "sheeple" and being part of the in-group.

You can also move money through the front business. The Mafia used flower shops, and bars. The (Man from) UNCLE operated from a laundry.

Actually the usual front was Del Floria's Tailor Shop, which had a sideline in cleaning. It wasn't a laundry as such. Though there were other entrances into the headquarters, such as the tunnels, the Masque Club and the unnamed IIRR charity organisation used as a front.

My brother, who worked for Revenue as a field investigator, knew certain businesses inside-out and could find suspicious cash flows very rapidly. Then specialised software was developed with business model analysis.

Just a coincidence that the DC writer who introduced the Fortress into Superman in the late 1950's was an junior editor at the publishers of DOc Savage in the early 30;s....
