I'm a history buff and I didn't know it had been demolished. Hell, I give these tourists credit. Most Americans wouldn't know what the Bastille was.

When I moved to Oregon I had to take a couple classes to get my OR credential as they didn't have a reciprocal program with CA where I have a lifetime credential. I took a course on the French Revolution. Fascinating. My term paper was on the representation of Marie Antoinette in post revolution literature and press. Got an A. She was a much unfairly maligned woman.

Pedant points: the alternative to bread was “de la brioche” which to be fair has no easy equivalent in English. The phrase is found in Rousseau’s “Les Confessions” from 1782 and so not original to M-A even if she did say it.

On a positive note it’s 5.45am here in rural France and I know what my breakfast is going to be when I get up in a few minutes.

Hmm. I wonder if it's getting to be time to make a Trump crime/lawsuit thread, as the Trump Presidency approaches the end.

Speaking of the subject, though -

NYT: A Trump family tax-evasion scheme benefited Donald and screwed over tenants

The scheme, first revealed in a 2018 investigation by The New York Times, involved tacking at least 20 percent onto the cost of materials purchased for the apartments, with Mr. Trump, his siblings and a cousin splitting the extra proceeds. The maneuver generated millions of dollars for each sibling, with no work required. While the siblings were still liable for income taxes, the maneuver allowed them to evade far-higher gift and estate taxes on part of the fortune they received from their father.

But the tenants paid a price. New York laws governing rent-regulated apartments allow owners to increase rents based on the costs of major capital improvements. The Trumps based their applications for rent hikes on the artificially increased invoices, so a boiler that actually cost $50,000 would generate a rent increase as if it had cost $60,000.

The lawsuit could pose a significant financial threat to Mr. Trump and his family. If the plaintiffs’ lawyers win approval of class-action status, any potential judgment would encompass every person who paid rent in more than 14,000 rent-regulated apartments since 1992.

Apparently the buildings were sold in 2004, but the artificially increased rents were carried over.
