More than 40m Americans have already voted - either by mail on in person - according to researchers at the US Elections Project.

In Texas, 59% of those who voted in 2016's election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have already cast their 2020 ballot. In Florida, 38% of 2016 voters have now voted.

Wisconsin, which only kicked off in person voting yesterday, 37% of the 2016 crowd has voted.

"Joe Biden is clearly not up to the rigours of campaigning for president, so he’s calling in Barack Obama as a reinforcement," begins a statement just out from the Trump campaign's communications director, Tim Murtaugh.

Obama is campaigning in person today for his former running mate, and Murtaugh's statement adds: "Obama can’t help Biden defend his own record of putting foreign interests ahead of working Americans."

Only if 12% is approximately zero

AUIU those forecasts do not take into account any Republican efforts to change the results of the election after the fact.

They can only do that in closely contested races. And yes for all intents and purposes 12% is approximately zero.

Yes he has a very enthusiastic core, and they seem to comprise 40% of the US electorate if his poll numbers an approval numbers are anything to go by.

No. His enthusiastic core is a subset (and I'd venture a pretty small subset) of the 40ish% of republican voters. See groups like the Lincoln Project (LP)(mostly Republicans who cannot stand Trump).

Reading places like Twitter and Reddit I have seen many posts from republicans who claim they voted early and voted Biden "first time ever voting Democrat" - there were vanishingly few of those posts in 2016 that I recall.

There are also an unknown number of people who may not have any love for President Trump but would rather die in a ditch than vote Democrat. Whether these people stay at home or hold their noses and vote for President Trump may be crucial to this election, particularly in swing states.

True, but there are also a fair number of Republicans voting for Biden (see the former RNC chair and LP for reasons as to why that is happening) we don't know how many of those there are - they probably cancel out. Also people are WAY more motivated to vote this time around. In 2016 people were suggesting this was the best ever time to vote 3rd party because Clinton was a shoe in. Today that's not happening.

It's almost unthinkable that President Trump will win the popular vote but it's not out of the realm of possibility that he may win the electoral college.

It's not out of the realms of possibility. It is so close in practical terms that we can say it's basically zero.

For Trump to win he has to crush Biden in the debate, he has to have some big news on the COVID front that shows him to be doing a great job, Biden has to make the most legendary of gaffes... it's just not likely.

Trumps "October Surprise" effort is backfiring, his debates to date have been abysmal, his rallies are losing him votes. He's cooked.

Actually, on 21 October 2016, fivethirtyeight.com were giving Donald Trump a 13.5% chance of election. This increased steadily over the next two weeks, peaked at 35% on November 6th before subsiding to just under 30%.

In other words, he's about where he was at this stage in 2016 :(

this isn't 2016.

the polls were really swingy back then. Trump was an unknown outsider and was riding the mystique of being a "great businessman" off the back of the Apprentice. He offered people simple solutions to complex problems. So lots of people signed on with that.

Now 4 years later he has a record to be judged on.

Has he saved coal mining jobs? Has he helped manufacturing jobs? Has he helped Joe public improve their lot?

No, no and no. His simple solutions were a con and enough of the people he conned last time around have seen enough to vote him out.

That's the biggest difference this time around.

Yes he'll always have his base, the monster raving teapot wingnuts who buy into QAnon or whatever crackpot theories are all the rage. He'll get the votes of the very fine racists, the Proud Boys et al. But that's not enough.

538 have the Democrats at a 70% chance to win the presidency the house AND the senate.

That was crazy talk a year ago.

The GOP are going down in flaming flames and they can't Gerrymander or claim voting fraud or otherwise steal this one, the numbers for Biden are too big.

Hell I think there's a decent chance Texas will flip blue...

I was outside the Ferndale, WA Library yesterday for hours. They have ballot box there. It's a pretty small town, but there was a steady line of cars dropping off their ballots.

Republican Congressmen call for investigation into Biden's use of a chartered Amtrak train for his campaign.
They aren't happy that just anyone can charter a train apparently.

Bush chartered an Amtrak train to campaign along the SoCal coast in 2000
House GOP chartered a train for it's retreat to Greenbrier in 2018

Letter GOP leaders sent to Amtrak:

One of my cool little trivial experiences of my life was that I once was in a band that played "Hail to the Chief" for the President.

Gerald Ford made a stop in my home town when he was running in 1976. I was in the high school band. He was riding an Amtrak train. No one seemed to mind. I didn't think about it at the time, but I'm guessing his campaign chartered it.

I like seeing stories like that, because it makes me think, "Is that all you've got?"

Which is what I'm thinking about the Hunter laptop story right now. I'll admit, I'm nervous that there might be something there, but every time I see the talking heads bring it up, I relax a little more. I saw one video today, of a guy I didn't know but apparently he works with Giulliani. He said he had gone over the laptop, and was saying it was amazing these guys (Joe and Hunter) hadn't been put into handcuffs. When asked about the contents, I'm not sure my description can do it justice, but it was basically along the lines of..."Oh, man. There is so much stuff there. It's unbeliavable. 24,000 emails. 600 images. Uhmmm.....there's so much stuff, I mean, it's really amazing. Like, there's one where they talk about holding 10% and, how can those guys get away with it?"

The host asked, hesitating, pausing meaningfully, if there were any "illegal" images, and the dude said, "Ya know.....I....I can't talk about that right now."

I'm figuring if there was anything on that laptop worth knowing about, he would have gladly talked about it. It makes me think there's nothing there.

It would be a bummer if there was a serious October Surprise in that laptop, but I just can't see it happening. Whatever it is Trump will talk it up, but he is dreaming if he thinks it will measure up to Hillary's emails.

If there was something incriminating against Joe Biden, we would know by now. Trust me, every word and every image has been poured over already. It would take me a couple of hours to copy the entire drive to 50 other drives and one could easily have a team of people to read every file. This isn't Hillary Clinton's 600,000 emails which of course was nothing.

To put that in political speak: Trump hasn't got any ex-presidents endorsing him, much less campaigning for him. Not even the Republican one.

I can't hear/read that without "It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no Senator's son" going through my head.

See how a completely ridiculous story that continues to circulate starts insidiously creeping into your mind.

The story is idiotic folks, not credible!!!!!!!!!

Sigh.

Me too! At just about this time of year in 1963. What I remember most is:
1. They wouldn't have had the Catholic HS there with the two public ones for any previous President;
2. JFK looked VERY tired;
3. He had to look at his notes to see where he was before saying how happy he was to be in Billings;
4. Had I not been too chicken to stick out my hand he'd have shaken it.

Oh, and just wait until those R congresscritters find out about Trump using a government plane!

Trump 2016: What have you got to lose?

Trump 2020: What else have you got to lose?

Drumpf 2016: what have you got to lose?
2016-2020: a quarter million dead Americans, alliances and foreign reputation in tatters, Mueller probe finds widespread corruption, democracy in crisis, riots in the streets
Everyone in 2020: well, that's one question answered.

DNI Ratcliffe just announced that Iran is trying to undermine confidence in our election by spreading the false claim that fraudulent ballots can be cast from foreign countries.
Does he realize that the president has been saying the exact same thing?
If it's a disinformation campaign when Iran does it, what is it when the president does it?

At this point Trump is getting a little desperate, he may say he doesn't pay attention to the polls, but he does. He is remembering how much mileage he got out of Hillary's emails last time and just hoping to find something to use this time. I believe you that the files have been analyzed already, that would mean we have nothing to worry about, unless they were waiting until tomorrow or the next day to drop the hammer.

The question is not whether the laptop contains legitimate incriminating evidence, it is whether it contains something Trump can use to his advantage.
