2020 Presidential Election

My point was that if those without ID were inclined to vote Republican, the two parties would completely switch their positions on the ID requirement. It may be hypothetical, but I do recall Republicans complaining about the Democrats blocking efforts to facilitate voting by military members abroad who would be more inclined to vote R, for example.

And the point is that "voter ID" is only part of the overall effort to suppress nonwhite voters, and that the democrats could, if they so desired, enact measures to, for example, kick stereotypically white names from voter roles, close down voting locations in white or rural areas, shut down access to ID locations in white areas, and so forth.

To date, this is virtually unheard of. At most, we see gerrymandering efforts to dilute republican voters (an effort I'm also against, but is not particularly relevant here, as they are often diluted with other majority-white areas that happen to vote for democrats).

I'll stand by the fact that everyone should have ID to function in a modern society. If that's difficult or expensive to get, then that's where the Democrats should focus their efforts. Not in blocking the voter ID requirements.

Except, again, republicans actively work against this in many states, and nonwhite people cannot vote against this because they have specifically been disenfranchised.

See how that works?

You might consider walking a mile in peoples' shoes who simply are not like you. There are many.

It depends on access to other pieces of ID and it depends on where you were born. It's a lot harder than it use to be because of identity theft.

I had to drive more than a thousand miles to get a current ID in Arizona because I lost my wallet. I had to drive from Phoenix back to my home state of Washington to get my Washington Driver's license so I could get an Arizona Driver's licence.

You might have missed my second sentence.

then that's where the Democrats should focus their efforts
You assume Democrats have not done this as well.

Maybe the GOP should focus their efforts on actually proving voter fraud is a significant problem. Maybe then it wouldn't look like their real goal is targeted voter suppression.

Mitch and GOP are resigned to Trump losing. They have now moved onto the Biden era: they will not pass any bills. Budget maybe. Absolutely no coronavirus subsidy bill.

Not if they lose the Senate too.

I think Tero meant until Jan.

I suspect McConnell with his disgusting self-serving mind will try to sabotage the country's economics as much as he can in the lame duck.

I think it's a bad GOP bet to withhold passing the COVID relief package hoping it will hurt the Democrats if McConnell can blame it on Pelosi.

Oh, I wish I could find one of those Fake GOP voter drop offs in California. I would empty the contents of my cat's litter box in a small box and drop it in.

If I understand correctly, the California GOP has refused to remove them. Keep an eye out for one.

I can't wait to see the look on that orange excrement when the realisation hits that he's going to have to go back to Mar-a-Lago a loser.

The absolute worst fallout from a Trump loss will be that Mar-a-Lago memberships will drop in value. He'll only be able to charge $250K to join. :(

That will be pretty easy.

The last government funding bill was signed last month, but it is set to expire in December. If Moscow Mitch and Stubby McBonespurs decide to block any sort of extension or negotiations, then there would be a government shut-down (which is quite devastating to the economy), right before Christmas.

Re: Illegal Republican "ballot boxes"

Why would it be up to them?
Well, technically they are private property. I think the government is sometimes careful about confiscating stuff (admittedly a rule that doesn't apply when drugs are involved.) They might think they need a court order.

I despise McConnell and no question, he is self serving. But I don't believe that action serves his aims. I don't see how he can effectively blame Pelosi.

An interesting admission, or acknowledgement. You say the Dems should focus their efforts on facilitating the distribution of ID in order to enfranchise all voters, because it's as sure as hell the Reps won't.

.... yet. The RealID (I think that is the name) is being rolled out even as we speak (type/read).

I don't think that's very much of national ID, it's just new minimum standards for the states when they issue ID. Some states were rather slack on their documentation requirements for getting an ID before. All "RealID" means is that you have to show a document from a short list, and then you'll get a little star (CA gets a cute little bear, apparently) on your state driver's license.

Yes. I haven't kept track, but it seems like every few years we change systems completely. The easiest was all electronic, but I suppose we didn't like the trees that survived that election.

That is a HORRIBLE system. How do you do a recount? How do you do a validity check? It's a system screaming out for someone to tamper with it.
