You know, everyone keeps saying the GOP will do everything they can to sabotage the election results after the fact, but are we really sure of that? Isn't there a possibility the GOP might cut their losses and run if Trump loses, especially if he loses bigly enough, since the more interference they run, the worse they'll look in the long run? Someone on this forum theorized that the real reason Trump is cutting millions of advertising is that he needs money for lawyer feeds after the election is over.
I know it feels like wishful thinking, but I am starting to see a wavering in support I haven't seen much of before in the Trump supporters and the people around Trump.
For five years, the GOP has tiptoed around a problem. They hate Trump. They really do. However, they don't want to alienate his followers, because they know they need them to get elected.
That's how he won the nomination four years ago. The other serious candidates treated him with kid gloves and didn't jump all over him in the early debates, because they didn't take him seriously, but they wanted to pick up his 20-30% following in the GOP. The other candidates split up the sane vote in the GOP primaries, leaving enough left to make Trump the front-runner. By the nature of the bizarre primary system we use, by the time they realized what was happening it was too late to stop him. Even then, they didn't like him. i thought he was doomed after the pussy grabbing tape, not because I thought it was actually awful, but because 11 Republican senators publicly disavowed him after that. They thought it gave them cover to denounce him, because with no chance of winning, they didn't want to be attached to him.
After he was elected, things changed. They still hate him. How could anyone not? However, they love what he does. He is faithful to the GOP agenda in almost every way. He even goes to places where they won't admit they want to go. He's not afraid of being called racist of sexist or whatever. he just doesn't care. Now, they think he might be going down, and they are a bit miffed about it, because if he does, he'll take some with him, and they still don't like him, so they may jettison him, but they still have to play a game where they worry about alienating his voters.
It's part of his divisive nature. The people who love him, love him. They will be angry, and will remember, anyone who "betrays him" in the GOP. On the other hand, the rest of us hate him. I don't hate most GOP politicians. On rare occasions I even vote for them. i hate Trump. Senators in less-than pure "red states" have to worry about alienating swing voters by supporting Trump.
But, if it's obvious he is going down, they'll abandon him.
What worries me is that it was "obvious" he was going to lose last time. That didn't go according to the script.
