Trump and Melania test positive test positive for Covid 19

Why do I care about things that don't affect me personally or directly but do have seriously negatively affect people who are not me? Because I'm not a sociopath.

You say you have a working conscience? Rather than saying that your feelings of empathy extend to people in general?

To poke further at that, though, I think that it might be worth borrowing a simple quote to poke at a concept.

Conservatives express as much empathy as liberals, but research shows they generally aim it at smaller social circles.

That's fairly different from being a sociopath, much as it can express itself in similar ways at times when it comes to those outside those smaller social circles.

Not stressing over something does not take away my right to an opinion

Of course. In the same vein, it also doesn't take away the right of others to have an opinion about your opinion.

I was merely pointing out, in this case, though, that what you've actually expressed is very much not "not stressing" about something - which is at the root of much of the conflict you're getting into in that derail.

Doesn't matter what people believe, it's what the GOP thinks they can get away with.

Not really. If they lose the presidency in a landslide, and lose enough Senate seats, then there's not a lot they can do about it. If Trump and Mitch McConnell and Lindsay Graham think they can get away with squatting but everyone else thinks they lost then they are just going to look foolish as they get dragged away.

It's silly to be painting these pitch black scenarios all the time assuming that the GOP have some kind of death grip on power. The reason why they can currently get away with what they get away with is that they have legitimate power. Once the legitimacy is gone, so will their power be.

Totally normal, totally normal breathing....
Trump's obsession with appearing like a strongman coming back to bite him, just like when he hid in the bunker during the riots. An ordinary president could say "yes, Secret Service ushered me down to the bunker, you know what they're like, take their jobs deadly seriously, but I trust in their experience and judgment", and that would've been the end of it. Trump, however, is terrified of appearing weak, so he spun some toddler-level story about "inspecting the bunker", which of course only brought ridicule.

In this case, he seems to have done everything he could to appear strong and healthy, even staging several photos of him apearing to work and (probably) getting doctors and others around him to lie about his condition, and then he blows it when he appears in public and wheezes like an orange elephant with COPD after climbing a set of stairs.

Even the trumpkins seem to be less than impressed. Maybe covid is causing connection issues between Trump and the hive mind.

The GOP have a lock on somewhere between 40% and 45% of the electorate and IIRC hold sway in the majority of state legislatures so it's not going to be "everyone else" who may think that they have lost, it's going to be more than half for sure but a chunk of that half may not be quite as invested as the Trump base and the GOP loyalists.

You're right that they have legitimate power but they have managed to achieve that legitimate power with fewer votes than the Democratic Party in both the Presidential election and the Senate elections. Given the demographic challenges that they face and are facing in the future, this is something that they will need to ensure from now on - keep power despite not having popular support.

Appointing a slew of judges, especially those in the SCOTUS is a major step in that direction. IMO all the GOP need is the merest sliver of doubt and they'll seek to have the Senate and POTUS results overturned. 2000 showed them how and now they've been able to properly do the groundwork.

Flu season is coming up! Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the Vaccine, die from the Flu. Are we going to close down our Country? No, we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!

200,000 is now officially (sometimes) far less then 100,000. Claiming otherwise is treason ! MAGA !

If a flu pandemic happened we'd probably close down the country, too.

In other, more civilized parts of the world where social distancing, increased hygiene, and mask-wearing are actual things, experts are expecting the flu season to be less impactful due to Covid precautions.

Meanwhile in the US the flu season could very well become a compounding factor to the ongoing pandemic.

"The salon"?

Lol

Salon. Not "The" Salon. Is it the NYT? No. Does it merit the sort of derision that certain crap that gets foisted here merits? No.

This is yet another instance of you posting something ignorant, albeit a lesser offense.

He didn't say that. He said in certain populations the flu is more lethal. Technically true (I guess) but not particularly informative, of course. Is the flu more lethal in the US population as a whole? Obviously not, so why do we care about the fact that it's more lethal in certain subpopulations.

As the "I guess" suggests, I don't know that the flu is more lethal in any particular population, but it's not implausible that it is. For now, I'll give Trump the benefit of the doubt on that, not because I trust him but because the statement is irrelevant and there's no reason to dispute something irrelevant.

It's very clear now that the administration's COVID policy going forward is we're gonna tough it out, even if it kills you. Tough is better than cautious, better than safety, better than you old, fat, weaklings who can't possibly afford themselves of the best medical care possible.*

I don't consume much network news, but I get the impression that Trump and his spineless, supplicating GOP sycophants are currently in control of this new narrative. The clueless dems seem to be sitting on their heels right now, when they should be punching back. Or maybe I'm just pessimistic.

I wonder how this is going to play with voters; his base is lapping it up already, but I just wonder if the new improved President Tough Guy is going to change voter's minds in his favor. I predict he'll get a bump in the polls, though there's no telling how that might play out in actual votes. Of course with this administration, there's no telling how the actual votes might get counted.

*Like the kind big fat orange bonespurs coward received.
