Watching the debate tonight?

Nominations for the next debate moderator? I vote for Simon Cowell wielding a loud buzzer.

Some people were saying Joe Rogan, which if it were anything like his podcasts, the debate would start off well but by the end he would be so stoned that it would be all about aliens and conspiracies.

Biden could even have made light of it: "Chris, let me know when it's my turn;" "Chris, would you invite the President to take a breath," etc.

The problem is, "Trump destroys everything he touches" still applies. If Biden followed this route, we'd see 90 minutes of unhinged Trump ranting, with Biden sitting there asking "When is it my turn?" Every single Trump supporter would see that as an unalloyed Trump win, that made Biden look like a pathetic loser who waits his turn, and meanwhile, those of us who want to hear actual discussions of real policies would be left high and dry.

There's no debate format that will both control Trump, and actually take place, because Trump will refuse to agree to anything that would actually stop him from acting like Trump.

From what I can see, the best possible outcome right now is that the debate commission unilaterally insists on a mute button, and Trump stomps off in a huff. If they time the announcement of the mute button just right (that is, not until after Trump is on stage), we can see the stomp&huff live on TV in the first 30 seconds of the "debate", but that's probably hoping for too much.

Each of them should be hooked up to electrodes and the moderator has a taser button.

That may have been a tactical mistake by Biden. Maybe he should not have responded at all to Trump and just spoken directly to Chris Wallace, and let Wallace deal with Trump's rants. Biden could even have made light of it: "Chris, let me know when it's my turn;" "Chris, would you invite the President to take a breath," etc.
At one point VP Biden did actually ask to reclaim his time. He should have done that more often.

The problem is that the rules must be defined and agreed on by both parties(' committees) beforehand.

that would be my guess, too.

But if the polls keep on looking dire for Trump, he will seek the limelight again, simply because he firmly believes he convince anyone if he gets to talk and talk.

He'll likely forgo to the debates and manufacture an October surprise. The October surprise(s) will likely be a vaccine no one has faith in and/or the results of an investigation no one cares about.

FWIW, my favourite footage from the debate is when Wallace said to Trump "could you let him finish?" and Biden said "He's not capable of that". He then started to speak and was interrupted, mid-sentence, by Trump smugly saying "You'd be surprised!"

If interrupting someone to boast that you're good at not interrupting people isn't peak Trump, then I don't know what is.

Yep. When I saw that it even more firmly cemented for me Trump's incapacity for disciplined self control. Yeah, he might be able to exercise some restraint for a day or so when it's been made clear to him that it's in his best interest to do so. But like a junkie with that monkey on his back, he cannot but relent to his urges.

Is Biden a Marxist? Ask Marxists what they think....(no friggin way)

In the rest of the world where there is actual range to the political spectrum, Biden is a just-right-of-the-middle liberal (not in the US sense) politician with maybe a whiff of social liberal ideas.

Anyone claiming that Biden is anywhere near a socialist is either totally ignorant about what socialism actually is or is flat out misinforming.

In Denmark we have actual socialists in our parliament. I think they would die laughing if anyone seriously called Biden a Marxist.

Trump Tweets

Why would I allow the Debate Commission to change the rules for the second and third Debates when I easily won last time?

The problem is that the rules must be defined and agreed on by both parties(' committees) beforehand.

The trouble with that would be Trump would then shout over everyone about how unfair Wallace was to give Biden more (ha ha) time than Trump! Probably absorbing even more time and creating yet more chaos.

I like the analogy upthread: it is like a tennis match wherein one player and the ref follow the rules and the other player follows no rules, goes ******* for the entire match, and essentially plays Calvin ball.

I don’t see a solution. Maybe one could lock Trump (and Biden only to be fair) in sound proof booths with microphones that can be muted. Then put prominent timers on each microphone so Trump and his supporters can’t accuse the moderator of cheating. But then I can picture Trump banging on the glass and taking running leaps against the walls. Maybe one would have to have curtains that hide the booths during the time outs!

Other ideas?

At a certain point the only solution really on the table is "People like Trump shouldn't even be part of the process."

I've already seen trumpkins gripe over how the debate was "two on one", which I take to mean they thought Wallace was on Biden's side for some reason. I agree that more anti-troll (in effect, anti-Trump) measures would've probably made it worse. Heck, maybe Trump would even have flounced like he has been known to do.

No they don't.

No, seriously - no they don't.

Let's take a page from Trump's playbook. If the committee just does this, unilaterally, and doesn't announce it until the cameras are rolling - who can stop them?

Make Trump make that choice - have a debate where he can't just rant and rave, or stomp off in a huff like a whiny brat. What's wrong with that scenario?

If what we saw this week is what we're going to see next week, there's literally no purpose to these debates. So why not go nuclear on Trump?

That's exactly what Trump needed; a time out. Er, I mean Executive Time.

I've thought about that. However, if we get to the point that they can't even be in the same room together, I'd rather just not have the debates.

Maybe separate glass booths with a limited oxygen supply? If you talk more you burn up more oxygen and pass out.
