Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 22

Jesus, how many times is he going to brag about that one poll result? It's like Al Bundy always going on about his high school football record.

He'll repeat it as often as his "I closed down flights from Jyna early and no one wanted to do it" lie.

“But we closed those borders very early, against the advice of a lot of professionals, and we turned out to be right. I took a lot of heat for that,” Trump said on March 4.
Asked by Hannity the same day about his rationale at the time he made the decision, Trump said, “I would say everybody said, it’s too early, it’s too soon, and good people, brilliant people, in many ways, doctors and lawyers and, frankly, a lot of people that work on this stuff almost exclusively. And they said, don’t do it.”
Trump repeated this claim at his town hall in Scranton on March 5, saying that as soon as he heard that China had a problem with the coronavirus, he asked how many people the U.S. had coming in from China. “Nobody but me asked that question,” Trump said. Trump added that his decision to impose the travel restrictions was made “against the advice of almost everybody.”
Everybody? Not according to Azar, who said it was the “uniform” recommendation of experts in his department. “The travel restrictions that we put in place in consultation with the president were very measured and incremental,” Azar told reporters on Feb. 7. “These were the uniform recommendations of the career public health officials here at HHS.”

He'll be spouting this lie at his rallies while his adoring imbeciles chant "Four more years".

He’s a stable genius... but then what is the average IQ of a horse?

Those “GREAT” Jobs Numbers yesterday" aren't as good as he is claiming as the BLS 'miscalculated' some groups including furloughed workers, those who have dropped out of the workforce ( ~6 million), and part time workers who can't find full-time work. The U-6 metric, which includes these people, puts the more realistic unemployment rate at 21.2%.

But you won't hear this from Trump or on FOX News or from the GOP. No, they're going with this campaign ad hyping this crap:

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/05/trump-ad-jobs-303791

I just saw a commercial for Trump celebrating this Dead Cat Bounce. Along with shots of the jet flyovers and bragging how great the economy was before COVID-19. They put that together real fast, of course it’s likely just another voiceover of an older commercial.

Wow! 96% Approval Rating in the Republican Party (and I believe this was before the “GREAT” Jobs Numbers yesterday). Thank you!..

Reality check from NPR:
As the country erupts in protests over police brutality and racism, two-thirds of Americans think President Trump has increased racial tensions in the U.S., according to a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll...Overall, 67% said Trump has mostly increased racial tensions, including 92% of Democrats, 73% of independents, 88% of Africans Americans and 63% of whites. Just 18% said he has decreased tensions, including 41% of Republicans. In fact, almost 6 in 10 Republicans believe he has either increased tensions (29%) or are not sure (30%). That's a finding the pollsters see as significant given how in lockstep Republicans have been with Trump on nearly everything. NPR link

Not only that (also from the NPR report linked above)-
Coinciding with Trump's handling of race relations are the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the downward turn of the economy. And the poll found that Trump is suffering politically. The number of people disapproving of the job he's doing as president is near a record; the intensity of the opposition against him — how many people strongly disapprove — is the highest it has ever been. To boot, he's losing by a substantial margin to presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, according to the poll.

That movement comes largely from independents. Overall, 56% of them disapprove of the job Trump is doing, up from 50% in March. The number of independents now strongly disapproving has jumped 10 points, from 33% to 43%.

This is the really important part. Let's face it, the percentage of Republicans supporting him isn't going to change. Like the Duke of Clarence who allegedly was murdered by drowning in a butt of malmsey wine, these Trumpers are drowning in a cesspool of Trump flavored Kool Aid. It's the Independents who will decide this election.

Red Nation Rising
@RedNationRising
@TedCruz completely exposes how Barack Obama and Joe Biden unleashed, weaponized, and politicized the DOJ, FBI, and the Intelligence Community to go after @realDonaldTrump

I don't remember anyone suggesting any Obama AG be investigated for possible disbarment but Barr is a different story:

In a rare move, the New York City Bar Association has asked Congress to investigate U.S. Attorney General William Barr for recent conduct that “threatens public confidence in the fair and impartial administration of justice.”

The Jan. 8 letter, sent to House and Senate majority and minority leaders, cited several public actions and statements that position the “attorney general and, by extension, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) as political partisans willing to use the levers of government to empower certain groups over others.”

There's two Americas. The red state/blue state idea is a false and dangerous narrative.

Texas isn't Red, California isn't Blue. Rural Texas is Red, Urban Texas is Blue, Rural California is Red, Urban California is Blue.
Urban/exurban is blue. Rural is red. That is *THE* political divide. Based on Brexit voting patterns, I would guess that that pattern is pretty widespread.

This is the really important part. Let's face it, the percentage of Republicans supporting him isn't going to change...

My hope is, the Republican turnout in November will be a bit lower than in 2016. Even a bit lower will help.

I'm afraid that Biden, assuming he wins in November, is going to have to spend at least the first year of his administration undoing all the damage that Trump has done.

It shouldn't take more than a day to tell EVERY Trump appointee to use the nearest exit. Having an empty post is better than one filled by a Trump lickspittle.

Reminder: The words “under God”, were not in the original Pledge of Allegiance, but added in 1954.

Problem I have is not so much with words "Under God" but that the assumption of many this means the Christian God. Irony is when Eisenhower signed the change, he made a major point of saying that no specific God was meant.

The biggest issue post Trump may be the way he's shown that many of the 'rules' governing the conduct of the President were nothing more than traditions and gentlemen's agreements that proved unenforceable in the face of a stubborn White House. The checks and balances that were supposed to limit the power of the Executive Branch seem to have been broken by a hyperpartisanship on the part of the Republicans and it may be impossible to repair them, leaving the door open for a competent authoritarian down the line.

I suspect these checks and balance could be repaired in under 75 days.
If Biden wins the election, the Republicans will work tirelessly to get those limits clarified and codified before January 20.

Although I fear the proposed law may say that SCOTUS is required to rule on the appropriateness of each and every subpoena that Congress sends to POTUS and his or her staff.

How badly do I want to burn a flag right now?

I have always thought that flag burning was an incredibly stupid thing to do, guaranteed to alienate people rather then listen to your point of view, but I actually am beginning to agree with you.

By that I assume you mean "Republican congressmen will work to enact rules that obstruct any attempt by Biden to fix Trump's damage, until some point when another Republican wins the white house, at which time those rules can be relaxed because Republican presidents can always be trusted".

A lot like the efforts to legislate Trump's abuses of power into having been okay for him, but illegal for those after him?
