The all-new "US Politics and coronavirus" thread

And this kind of crap is why I'm convinced that literally everybody in the US is going to catch the virus and should have everything planned out for when they do get it and prepare for the worst. It's the combination of the Federal government doing literally nothing...correction, WORSE than nothing and actually encouraging the spread of the virus; states that do try to help their citizens being sabotaged by the feds; and the "MUH RIGHTS!1!" morons becoming increasingly violent towards any measures whatsoever to stop the spread of the virus, while believing that "bravery" somehow makes them immune. The economy is going to tank worse than before, lots of people will die and there's nobody to stop it. America is full of stupid, stupid people.

Very interesting. When interviewed, patrons and the Iron Hog Bar owner all said the same thing: quarantining or wearing a mask should be their "choice." This attitude exists in many places and it usually doesn't work out too well. The scary thing is, surveys show as many as 25% of people infected a) have no symptoms and b) are unaware they're contagious.

The Iron Hog Bar is in Ozaukee County Wisconsin, which has a population of about 90,000. They have recorded 107 cases and 9 deaths. The high death rate, over 8% or double the state average, suggests there have been a lot of unrecorded positives. I got the impression from the people interviewed by the local reporter, they know what they're doing is not too smart but they feel lucky. That they won't be one of the ones to get sick. Ironically, the age group with the second highest number of infections in their area is the 20-29 group. They account for about 20% of confirmed cases. Link

Video now showing of several 20-somethings whooping it up at a Wisconsin bar. I'm not sure I'd risk my life for a beer and some chicken wings. I do hope they will track those customers end employees (not one of which was wearing a mask) and see what they're doing a month from now. I think it would be great if none of them got sick. I think it is unlikely that no one will.

I saw that. Insanity. No wait, following the insane, they might otherwise just be stupid.

If none of them had it in the first place, none will have spread it. That's still a very reasonable scenario at this point. The more they do stuff like that, of course, the higher the risk to all of them.

With that said, incidentally, the ruling was apparently for state level. I heard that in response to the stay at home order being nullified at a state level, stay at home orders at more local levels were immediately put into place.

It wouldn't be used as an argument....just merely a vehicle to bring ire down on parsman for amusement.

I see. I stand by the dishonest part, then.

To poke at something completely different for the fun of it, though...

Fox News urges viewers to 'put freedom before fear,' then extends its own work-from-home order

Yeah, Fox doesn't even remotely practice what it preaches.

I really don't understand why Fox News is 'reporting' this kind of thing.
Fox News personalities have been urging governors to reopen states and telling viewers things like “put freedom before fear” and “herd immunity is our friend.” Anyway, they say, the virus is “easing” and will “eventually burn out.” Link

I read on a media blog a month ago, that Fox upper management had told the news staff to 'tone down' reports downplaying the seriousness of the coronavirus epidemic. The legal staff had begun to be concerned about potential liability and lawsuits. What they feared was someone dying of coronavirus and then have the family sue Fox for having disseminated false and misleading information to them. A scenario where the family would claim, 'Dad [or whomever] got all his news from Fox and, based on what he was hearing, he refused to stay home, wear a face mask or practice social distancing' and this led directly to his having contracted the virus. That it might not be a winnable case but Fox would have to defend itself and it would make the network look terrible.

If they goal is to flatten the curve, they might have achieved it. They might have spread out the virus enough that their region will not see any excess deaths from lack of ICU space.

If the goal is elimination...they are not doing that. But neither are the states that have bars closed right now.

"Everyone else is being responsible, so let's get all our idiots infected before the hospital systems are overwhelmed" would be about par for the course for rural Wisconsin.

FWIW, I head a commentator on a podcast yesterday (I'll look up who it was, if anybody is bothered) make a good case for why the pandemic will likely not see Trump electable come November.

The first point was that, of course, his base will never abandon him. But they alone won't get him elected. He needs other people to put him over the top. The theory was that these fell broadly into two categories: the old, and those who thought that as a businessman Trump would be good for the economy.

But now anything Trump does will alienate one of those groups, assuming they still support him. If he keeps the country locked down, then those who care about the economy will lose faith in him. If he re-opens the country, then the old will lose faith in him because they are the most at risk.

It's an interesting hypothesis, at least.

Trump tweeted

The Great State of Wisconsin, home to Tom Tiffany’s big Congressional Victory on Tuesday, was just given another win. Its Democrat Governor was forced by the courts to let the State Open. The people want to get on with their lives. The place is bustling!

I'm not sure they are being irresponsible. It would only be irresponsible if this level of behavior leads to excess ICU needs.

What don't you understand about it? They're pretty much just following their standard playbook as usual...

Yes, I understand that, but my point was apparently after Fox upper management told the news staff to 'tone down' reports downplaying the seriousness of the coronavirus epidemic, the talking heads seemed to be complying. A website that tracks Fox News said certain phrases the hosts used to downplay the seriousness of the epidemic -- I don't remember what those phrases were -- began to be used noticeably less. In March they forced Trish Regan out and in April they parted ways with Diamond & Silk.

Reportedly though, there is a battle going on in Fox upper management. One side urges caution while the other side says, 'Let 'em sue.'
