The all-new "US Politics and coronavirus" thread

Far as I have seen, the swastikas are used to suggest that Whitmer is behaving like a Nazi.
Yeah, that's the kind of handwaving I'd expect from them, along with the usual dog whistles. To other Nazis, they're proud flag-waving Nazis. To virtue-signalling PC SJW feminists, they're just "jus' symbolizing that someone else is Nazi, dude, cuz that's totally how flags work. Chill ouut and get with it, maaan".

Like when Trump takes several days to condemn Nazi protesters. His followers get to tell you that he did condemn them and is thus totally not a Nazi, but his followers register that it took him several days, and get the message.

One of the funny (odd, not ha ha) things about all this is that, way back before the NRA became what it is today, when it was still mostly an organization dedicated to teaching people how to do gun sports safely, I recall as a Boy Scout being taught some basic rules, courtesy of the NRA education program. As I recall, there were a few basic rules of gun safety, which I still regard as written on stone. One was that until you determine it definitively for yourself, you assume any gun is loaded ("I didn't know it was loaded" never acceptable). Another was that you never point a gun at someone you don't intend to shoot, and maybe kill, and never brandish a gun unless you intend to use it ("it was an accident" never acceptable).

The good old days when the second amendment did not include the right to threaten.

I can't find it again, but I once saw a cartoon where it showed a bunch of Democrats waving signs that read "Republicans are Nazis!" and a bunch of Republicans waving signs that read "Republicans are Nazis!" Hyperbole, but still pretty funny.

It's being posted that someone hasn't "seen" nooses or swastikas but I presume they mean by that they haven't seen them in the news or on TV. Michigan state senator Dayna Polehanki -- a retired public school teacher -- is in the middle of all this and she said confederate flags, swastikas, nooses, and misogynist messages have become "ubiquitous." I have no reason to doubt her. There have been several protests at the state house and also at the private residence of the governor. Hanki referred to the latter as being particularly troubling because Governor Whitmer's family was home, including two teenage daughters. Polehanki said the demonstrators were very angry, some were armed, some were chanting and, I presume, some had the banners and flags.

My understanding is the swastikas are not meant to convey that the protestors are Nazis or Nazi sympathizers, just the opposite in fact. That Whitmer is a Nazi for 'locking people' in their homes. Ironically, placards and banners denouncing her as a Fascist or a Communist are both seen.

Another reason we may not be seeing some of the extreme signs in the media is, the protestors are all about social media and images. They may put those signs away, the really egregious stuff, when the media is present filming or taking photographs. The protestors know those images will be divisive if seen in national media. Another possibility is, the media may not be showing some of the extreme stuff as they might feel it would be too inflammatory. That's something journalists wrestle with all the time.

Taken as a whole, the protestors are a very small group, a few hundred out of millions. Polling shows the vast majority support the shutdown. If the media gives the protestors too much coverage they are validating or legitimizing them out of proportion to the tiny part of the population they represent. If armed protestors show up at a state capitol the media has to report it. That's news. But some of the editorial people may feel the coverage has to be somewhat restrained as the protestors undoubtedly want it as a platform. A way to reach a huge part of the population.

In fairness, it does seem even the majority of the protestors fly American flags and carry fairly restrained signs. Local militia groups and extreme right wing groups have been quick to insert themselves into the demonstrations. They probably don't even really represent the majority of the protestors.

Let's face it. As Ms. Polehanki said, being confronted by armed protestors in military combat dress, protestors who are very angry, chanting that the governor should be locked up, that she's a Nazi or a communist -- take your pick -- this is not democracy. It's one step from mob rule.

From Business Insider:

See them? Talk to them? Make a deal? Who does trump think they represent, a few thousand whackjobs like him? Even for donnie this is bizarre.

Some of the very good people lined up by the governor's office yesterday inside the state capital.
They are getting good ratings so are therefore good people. Trump's "reasons" are always very simple, even if stupid or idiotic.

I wonder how many of the people calling the lockdown "tyranny" also said that calling the places where children were locked in cages "concentration camps" was hyperbole?

I thought distrust of the government was baked in with American society, what with the guns to protect themselves of tyrannical versions of it and what not.

In which case it could be reasonable to suggest they might be less likely to follow these rules from above, lockdown or social distancing or whatever they may be, even if it hurts them.

Is that a factor? or am I just being racist?

It is certainly the way we see ourselves. I think it's a factor.

I don't know if it's a real phenomenon or part of our national myth.

The Second Amendment. One of the most unfortunately and ambiguously phrased statements in human history. A case of less NOT being more. The brevity, and almost arcane phraseology, that has lead to many tens of thousands of needless deaths.

It's not so much the phrasing as the Court's interpretation of that phrasing.

"A well regulated Militia" seems pretty clear to me. How are these yahoos "well regulated" in any way?
.

Yes, if only these white supremacists asserting their will with assault rifles had a properly regimented structure and starched dress uniforms for formal occasions like a government visit.

And while these idiots are protesting their state capitals, governors are using the national guard to guard tests they have imported from South Korea from federal government seizure.

Wow! Just wow!

The Hill: Maryland governor says coronavirus tests acquired from South Korea under guard at undisclosed location
“We spent about 22 days and nights dealing with this whole transaction with Korea. We dealt with the Korean Embassy, folks at the State Department ... and our scientists on both sides trying to, you know, figure out these tests,” Hogan said, adding that he also coordinated with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“And then at the last moment, I think 24 hours before, we got the sign-off from the FDA and Border and Customs, to try to make sure that we landed this plane safely," he continued.

Hogan said state officials ensured the plane landed at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport rather than Dulles International Airport in Virginia, noting that it was the first time a Korean Air passenger plane had landed at the airport.

“We landed it there with a large contingent of Maryland National Guard and Maryland State Police, because this was an enormously valuable payload. It was like Fort Knox to us, because it’s going to save the lives of thousands of our citizens,” Hogan continued.

COLORADO PURCHASED 100K COVID-19 TESTS FROM SOUTH KOREA AND 'KEPT IT UNDER WRAPS' TO AVOID FEDS SEIZURE, SAYS GOVERNOR
Colorado Governor Jared Polis did not announce that the state recently received over 100,000 coronavirus test kits from South Korea over fears that federal authorities could seize them.

Multiple instances of feds seizing state supplies of tests and personal protective equipment have been reported since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Polis said on Friday that Colorado kept their latest shipment hidden because the state did not want to lose the tests to "the competition."

"We were worried that the federal government or somebody else would take them," the governor told Colorado Public Radio. "We kept it under wraps. We simply didn't know if anybody would swoop in... I mean, we didn't want another state or the feds or anybody."

"We don't want to give the competition, which could mean other countries, could mean our own country, could mean other states—we don't want to give them a heads up of what we're doing," he added.

The indication that they are well regulated is that they didn't shoot.

No, that just proves they're only 99% stupid. They'd be shot if they opened up. They felt - quite rightly - they wouldn't be treated the same way as black guys in the same situation would be.

They do, but unfortunately, all their sheets were at the laundries that are all closed.
