The Trump Presidency: Part 20

Help me out here:

Why is no one separating Trump and Pence? Should not the President and Vice-President be separated during this national emergency?

Are they not even considering that either or both of them could contract COVID-19... and die??

Are they TRYING to set up a scenario by which President Pelosi takes the helm???

The more I watch Trump's pressers and his defensive attacks on any reporter who dares ask a question he doesn't like, including a Fox reporter, the more I'm convinced this idiot is a true danger to this country. He simply does not live in the real world.

Watching him today felt like glass shards being shoved behind my eyes.

He was so petty and childish I was surprised he didn't start stamping his feet. His reaction to anything slightly critical is like that of a spoiled 6-year-old.

Agreed. The more he gets exposed and the more pressure there is on him, the worse he's getting. Which is what several mental health experts predicted. See the "Trump has a mental illness" thread.

At this point, I can come to no other conclusion than those who still support him are idiots.

Perhaps, but why?

That's a serious question. We know that the drug is associated with Trump. So, I suppose the fact that it might be successful is, in a perverse way, bad news to some people. But again, why? Even Trump haters want there to be treatments.

Also, to add some other "why?" elements. Why is that article the "least popular". It certainly isn't the most significant related to hydroxyquinone. Far more significant are the stories of large scale trials going on even as we speak, and previous somewhat controlled studies of the drug that showed promise. I say "somewhat controlled" because I don't think any were double blind studies, which is the gold standard of drug studies, but circumstances made it inadvisable to conduct such a study with this one.

So, again, why? Because your comment really is revealing about Trump and his supporters.

Trump made this story all about him. That's what he does. There were hints that this drug might be useful. Trump made sure to associate himself, personally, with this drug. Did that help? Would there have been no trials of this drug if he had pushed for it behind the scenes? Does a President of the United States not have the power to make things happen, without throwing open a press conference and making sure he was the center of attention? He can still direct the FDA to do things. He can still direct studies to be conducted. His media grabbing related to this drug didn't get it into use any faster. If anything, it impeded progress, but it created controversy and it gave Trump attention.

And then, why this story? Why not the clinical trials? Because in the mind of a marketer, like Trump, everyone knows that one personal story is better than a whole clinical trial. That's unfortunate, but it's true. In reality, the clinical trial matters and the anecdote is random noise, but Trump knows how to sell himself to the gullible, and he knows that having a Democratic lawmaker praise him is great publicity.

So, it looks like this is a good turn of events for Trump, and for the world. I'm not sure it's a "game changer". More data required, but I read today that thousands of people are being treated with this drug, so very shortly there will be enough data to make some judgement about its effectiveness.

But why is it all about Trump?

Good on him for pushing it. I'm confident Barack Obama would have done the same, based on the preliminary assessments. Obama would have just waited to declare victory until he had actual data, instead of the hints that are still dribbling out.

Yep, they have lots of experience with something they've just developed. Anybody else see a problem with that statement?

Yep.
6 or 7 years from now when they study this period of history, I hope they pick this pariticular lie as an example of how bad a liar President Trump is and how invested one would have to be to accept something so childish.

SHUSH!!! JUST BE QUIET!! DON'T SPOIL THE SURPRISE ENDING!

REPORTER: You mentioned you asked US drug companies to help treat Boris Johnson. What kind of treatment is that?

TRUMP: "It's a very complex treatment of things that they've just recently developed. And that they have a lot of experience with, having to do with something else."."

Unbelievable. Un-fricken-believable.

What a selfish prick.

Looks like Trump and his administration could wind up being directly responsible for 10's of thousands of deaths before this is all said and done.

Yes, but... this it probably not a particularly good argument for that. That the Trump Administration took until mid-March to start ordering supplies in bulk is likely an example of a far, far better direction to point for that (and is fairly certainly a main cause for this), rather than this, which is more along the lines of switching who survives between non-US citizens and US citizens.

As far as I'm concerned, I would label this as "murder". Cold-blooded, calculated, selfish, self-centered murder.... All for the sake of, not saving the american people, but for the sake of saving his own skin in the hopes of re-election. He doesn't even give a **** about how it looks to the rest of the world, he only gives a **** about how it looks to his voters for Nov 2020.

Murderers. Crimes against humanity.

I'm looking forward to the investigation into the Trump administration (aka the US government) by the United Nations for possible crimes against humanity, at the end of all this.

Mmm... "Modern Day Piracy," I think, is more accurate than either murderers or crimes against humanity in this case. There's plenty of grounds for crimes against humanity and at least mass manslaughter, though, elsewhere.

But I watched/listened to him say it, word for word in his update today.

His abuse of certain members of the press was over the top, unhinged.

This is Trump, remember? The guy who used a just orphaned baby for a smile photo-op. It's show and pretense over substance and good judgement just about always.

I'm not exactly a Trump "hater," though I do oppose him very firmly, but I think I'll chip in on my thoughts here. Trump pushing it like he is is annoying. Why? Because it's reckless and incredibly dangerous. If it turns out that it works and saves lives? Great! It would still be nothing more than a lucky fluke, though, and depending on getting really, really lucky (gambling way against the odds) is an absolutely terrible way to be a leader, regardless of whether the gamble is won or lost. I can certainly get behind testing it further and allowing it as a potential last resort attempt, but... at last check, there are frequently a number of substances that have been found to do things in clinical trials. Only a tiny fraction of them tend to pass the next step for a host of good reasons to reject them. That seems quite likely to be the case for the numerous substances that have shown promise in clinical trials in relation to COVID-19, too. At last check, what Trump's pushing has shown promise in clinical trials, but it's waaaay too soon to consider it a working treatment instead of a long-shot gamble.

IIRC abaddon is not in the US. I think he's in the Republic of Ireland.
Can I please make a general request that people fill in the location in their profile with at least the name of their country? It's always been useful information, if only to tell you what time zone they're in so you know you might have to wait for the answer to a question you just asked them, but at the moment it's absence is actually very annoying. A poster says what's happening "here", you look across to see where they are, and they haven't bothered to tell you! I know there are fewer posters than there used to be, but there are still enough to make it impossible to keep track of where everyone lives from memory alone.

Pretty please?

More magical thinking from President Trump - he's going to cure Boris Johnson:

US President Donald Trump says he asked two "genius" US companies to help in the treatment of the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was moved to intensive care after his virus symptoms worsened.

In a press briefing on Monday, Trump said he had asked "two of the leading companies, brilliant companies... to contact London immediately".

He did not give the names of the companies or say what treatment methods were being considered. Johnson is being treated in the ICU at St Thomas' Hospital in London.

An unspecified treatment from unnamed companies - sounds to me that President Trump's mouth just ran away from him.

Seconded

I recall claims during the first gulf war that Kuwaiti children had been dumped out of crucial medical incubators and the incubators stolen by the invading Iraqis. This was of course viewed by the USA and the rest of the world as a horrible war crime. Thankfully these claims turned out to be false (manufactured by the Kuwaiti government). Sadam was not quite that evil. But I am now fearful that my own government is that evil. There must be an investigation to determine the truth and, if proven, punish the guilty.
