The Trump Presidency: Part 20

I've backed up from a few people only to have them balk "I don't have it!"

I ask "so you've been tested in the last few days?"

"Well, no..."

Beyond stupid.

I pray he catches corona.

I pray he infects Pence.

The sad/scary part is, he isn't kidding. I've seen the same stupid pro-Trump BS on Facebook. There really is a hard core of morons who believe he's doing a great job.

This is what we're up against.
SNAFU. Into their comfy echo chambers, no unpleasant news about Dear Leader can penetrate. In their world, Trump is handling the pandemic bigly great. Oh, and butbutbutwhataboutbiden.

Saw a clip of Trump from 20 years ago and I couldn't help but be struck by the contrast between that squirrely bright-eyed guy and the bloated, waddling, disgusting racoon we see now. Also, he doesn't look well. Very heavy on his feet. Could be some of that irritability, that querilousness, is because he just doesn't have the energy, mental or physical, that he needs.

Cuomo for president.

Trump's popularity rises as fake news and the Democrats try their best to trash him 24/7. Must be frustrating to see a real leader like Trump in time of crisis being praised by Cuomo and Newsom. He's a cinch to be reelected now. Anyone seen Biden, the invisible man? Haven't heard from him since he plagiarized all of Trump's virus decisions and declared that was what he would do if he was POTUS. What a loser.

Don't worry. Trump takes no responsibility. The buck stops somewhere else.

And the only thing frightened Americans need to know, is that one guy is a bad reporter.

Much presidential. Such lead.

Sorry for the derail.
I was at the Home Depot today for similar reasons as your husband. Seems that home improvement projects are second only to day drinking as a method of coping.
Personally, I like to combine the two :)

Day drinking gets in the way of my evening drinking. Same thing happened when I was on steroids - a ton of home improvement got done.

Ask them, what would things be like if he were doing a bad job?

I want to know criteria for assessment how well Trump did with COVID-19. I mean real criteria, of course, not "he will fail because he is republican" or "he will do good because he is republican". Some people already know everything (though I agree one can predict future performance based on past performance).

For me, pretty good objective critera would be amount of deaths. Certain minimal number is inevitable even with best response, of course. But how much is too much?

I would see it as two numbers. Smaller one is amount of deaths below which USA did very good job and Trump gets credit. Bigger one is number when USA and Trump fails catastrophically. Anything between is "meh, could be better, could be worse".

There are also other considerations - for example if we try to grade USA on curve, we compare it'sits performance with results from other countries.
Comparing with other countries must take in account differences in population (for example, in more populous country more people will die all other things being equal) to be it of any value.

Obviously, this kind of assessment would be possible only in aftermath, or at least when majority of crisis is over. I think November is sufficiently far away in future. In fact, it is sufficiently far in future to catch screwups like allowing for second wave of infections and things like that.

Here's a copy of a post I made in the main COVID-19 thread [Continuation] 2019-nCoV / Corona virus Pt 2], with an update.

Certainly. Look to your northern neighbour, Canada.

Canada has approximately 1/10 the population of the US (37 million people vs 330 million.). Typically things happen in a 10:1 ratio for the US vs Canada; for example, all other things being equal, for every pound of spaghetti sold in Canada there would be 10 pounds sold in the US.

Now look at the COVID-19 numbers. The latest (from Wikipedia) shows 32,412 confirmed cases and 414 deaths in the US, and only 1,435 cases and 21 deaths in Canada. That means for every one Canadian case there are 23 US cases (not 10 as would normally be expected) and for every Canadian death there are 20 American deaths (again, not 10 US deaths as would be expected.)

The bottom line is the US is getting hit twice as hard as Canada. And the gap is increasing as the days go on.

The update: the 1:10 population ratio is more accurately 1:8.7, meaning if something happens to 10 people in Canada, then it's likely it will happen to 87 people in the United States.

Now let's apply the latest numbers from Wikipedia:

Metric | Canada | Expected US number based on 1:8.7 ratio | Actual US Number | Actual Canada:US Ratio
COVID-19 cases|1,470|12,789|33,889|1:23
COVID-19 deaths|21|183|428|1:20

The bottom line is the USA is getting hit twice as hard as Canada is, and the 1:23 ratio in Canadian vs US cases has been widening in the last few days—it was 1:17 three days ago. And the US still hasn't caught up to Canada's testing rate. Canada has tested 2,346 people per million population while the US has tested only 695 per million.

As far as I'm concerned, these numbers are a direct result of the Trump Administration's downplaying of the threat back in the February to mid-March timeframe. Canada was taking it seriously all that time, if not acting as quickly as I would have liked.

Cuomo for president.

After Cuomo's speech on C SPAN today, I'd vote for him.
