2019-nCoV / Corona virus Pt 2

I received one of those mass broadcast emails from a friend. I wonder if any of this makes sense...

This info is from my friend that works for CDC that passed this along to his family and friends. I'm passing it along as well..

The new NCP coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days, how can one know if he/she is infected. By the time they have fever and/or cough and goes to the hospital, the lungs is usually 50 % Fibrosis and it's too late!

Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning:

Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stuffiness or tightness, etc.,it proves there is no fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicating no infection.

In critical times, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air.

SERIOUS EXCELLENT ADVICE by Japanese Doctors treating COVID-19 cases:

Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat is moist, never DRY. Take a few sips of water every 15 mins at least. WHY?**

Even if the virus gets into your mouth...drinking water or other liquids will WASH them down through your esophagus into the stomach. Once there in tummy...your stomach ACID will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water more regularly....the virus can enter your windpipes and into the LUNGS. That's very dangerous.

Oh dear.

The CDC has said nothing of this sort.

The new NCP coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days,
True.

Utter bollocks.
Most Covid-19 infected suffer few effects and this paragraph is utter gibberish.

No. Pulmonary fibrosis is not a symptom of Covid-19. This is also rubbish.

I'd like to see a citation for this "excellent advice"...

Rubbish. While hydration helps with immune system function neither Covid019 nor other virii are "washed away"

Stick with hand washing (ah Semmelweis where are you now?) and other basic hygiene. If you're feeling unwell isolate yourself if possible.

Finally do not neglect your mental health. Social isolation is bad, talk to people (or communicate in whatever way you do). If you're physically isolated (home working et cetera) practice proper diet (chocolate is not, alas, necessary for health), sleep well and don't self-medicate with alcohol or other social intoxicants.

Is there any indication that warm weather will slow the transmission?
Other people on the thread have been pointing out, heat per se is not necessarily a problem for the virus, but it still could be seasonal. We can hope.

The 1968 H3N2 pandemic killed around 34,00 in the USA, ~700,000 worldwide. This won't be as bad, even with Trump.

Evidence for that claim?

I received one of those mass broadcast emails from a friend. I wonder if any of this makes sense...

No. The same thing was covered quite a few pages ago, and this is the giveaway:

Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat is moist, never DRY. Take a few sips of water every 15 mins at least. WHY?**

That is complete nonsense. Covid is spread by sticking the viruses in your mouth/nose/eyes and drinking water won't make any difference at all.

If you've got it, drink like a fish, though. The fact that people with bad kidneys are dropping like flies could mean flushing helps.

Is there any indication that warm weather will slow the transmission?

No, but anecdotal evidence suggests it's a possibility. The Covid-19 map shows by far the strongest growth in countries that are cold right now, and far slower growth in countries that are warmer and more humid.

Compare Australia's case growth compared to Italy, and Aussie had 4 cases before Italy had any.

Time will tell, but I think there's still hope.

Except for countries heading into winter... (like mine)

I feel bad for the basketball player who got outed for having the virus that shut down the entire NBA season. At least, that's how some fans are going to look at it. That it's all his fault, I mean.

He did not do himself any favors in this regard.

A couple of days ago when the team held a press conference to announce that the player was sick and would be getting tested, but before the test was given, this is how the player ended the press conference:

.

There is reporting that he has been rather dismissive of the virus, even going around and touching other players things. He also made sure to touch every microphone and chair for a post game press conference. And now...drum roll, please... another of his team has the virus!! Good job, Rudy Gobert. Asshat.

Yes, fingers crossed.

Hopefully southern hemisphere countries that are now heading towards winter will be much more prepared than the northern hemisphere was and can limit the spread to a greater degree.

I think last night was then this got real for a lot of people who were not taking this seriously before in the US.
I think it was not so much Trump's speech, but the NBA cancellation and the TOm Hanks news that brought it home.

Earlier in the thread, someone asked about Australia, and what we're doing to prevent the spread.

So here's a list:
1. We're testing aggressively.
2. We now have pop-up, and drive through clinics.
3. When cases are identified, we're tracking contacts aggressively.
4. We belatedly put travel restrictions in place (too late in all cases, but better than nothing - we've banned flights from Italy today, for example).

In my workplace, on my floor:
1. Posters everywhere about hand-washing protocols.
2. Alcohol based hand sanitiser at all three entrances to the floor.
3. Ongoing emails about our state of preparation, and calling our attention to the hand-washing and hand sanitisation.

Now the scary bits...
1. Our (workplace) flu vaccinations are at least two weeks away.
2. We're running out of hand-sanitiser really quickly, the three boxes I reported earlier were all filled with the rest of a large stationary order, hand-sanitiser is still on 'back-order'.
3. One of my team didn't report to work today.
4. Another member of my team was sent home today, because he was suddenly struck down with a high fever and shivering.

To the people who keep saying "seasonal"...

... not a chance, it is hot in Australia, rarely humid, and we're seeing personal transmissions within the country everywhere.

A number of commentators in the US were making that point when talking about Tom Hanks getting the virus in Australia.

Hopefully southern hemisphere countries that are now heading towards winter will be much more prepared than the northern hemisphere was and can limit the spread to a greater degree.

Aussie seems to be taking it pretty carefully, but NZ's approach seems to be "She'll be right".

I was hoping we'd learn from Italy, but I'm not seeing it thus far.

Yeah, the "It's just the flu bro" crowd has all but STFU... thankfully.

Also, the NHL has suspended operations and MLB has as well.

The Big Die-Off start?

Perhaps. I predict the virus will do some damage, begin to wane and then be followed by a mutant virus that really hammers the planet. I still think cell phone microwaves are involved. Scary now that it is here. And the Ponzi economy will not escape the Big Correction this time.
