UK - December 2019 General Election

No they haven't, from their manifesto

"Digital

Digital and technological

advancements bring challenges,

but also huge opportunities. In the

age of AI and automation, digital

connectivity will underpin our future

economy. We will need world-class

digital infrastructure in which everyone

can share.

Labour will deliver free full-fibre

broadband to all by 2030.

We will establish British Broadband,

with two arms: British Digital

Infrastructure (BDI) and the British

Broadband Service (BBS). We will bring

the broadband-relevant parts of BT

into public ownership, with a jobs

guarantee for all workers in existing

broadband infrastructure and

retail broadband work.

BDI will roll out the remaining 90–92%

of the full-fibre network, and acquire

necessary access rights to existing

assets. BBS will coordinate the delivery

of free broadband in tranches as

the full-fibre network is rolled out,

beginning with the communities worst

served by existing broadband networks.

Taxation of multinationals, including

tech giants, will pay for the operating

costs of the public full-fibre network.

The plan will boost jobs, tackle regional

inequality and improve quality of

life as part of a mission to connect

the country."

I like this. It is about time the stupendously rich MNC's pay their proper share of taxes just like all the other companies in Britain.

Unfortunately, it's not something that a single country can tackle by itself, especially if the majority of those companies are US-based and can therefore rely on President Trump to implement trade sanctions to support them.

If only the UK were a member of a large international bloc who could work together to avoid corporate tax avoidance/evasion within the bloc and had the economic muscle to fight back if other countries implement sanctions.

....edited to add

Though corporate tax rates in the UK are very low in any case so even UK-based companies aren't paying "their share" of taxes.

Might be a good idea to create a "union" with our fellow European countries. That way we could have real influence on the world stage. We could call it something like United Europe, or UE.

That's a great idea, overwhelming upside, you'd have to be mad or brainwashed to object!

We have been. For decades. Worked out great hasn't it? Currently no inequality whatsoever.

Yes, though how great will only become apparent when we leave it.

Currently no inequality whatsoever.
Just wait until you see the inequality a far right government can achieve in five years when they have complete freedom to enrich the 1% at the expense of the 99%.

I don't know if the photographs were cherry-picked, but it seemed to me a lot of long lines at ballot boxes today.

What are the experiences of those here who have been to the polls?

Walked in, no queue, did the business, walked out, one or two other people coming in as I left. This was mid morning so never going to be the busiest of times.

I must admit that I'm very disheartened by the fact that the best result we can hope for is the slim possibility of a hung parliament, with it being more likely for the Tories to have a majority, and maybe even a big one or a landslide - depending on the polls.

And this is with their two electioneering points basically being "look at what a mess we've made of Brexit" and "we'll make the country better by reversing some of the disastrous policies we've enacted over the last decade".

Partly that's down to the Corbyn factor, partly that's down to how successful the "Labour is anti-Semetic" propaganda has been (which cheerfully ignores Tory racism), and partly it's down to sheer stupidity, ignorance, and bloody-mindedness on behalf of the voters.

Same as sphensic. The only person ahead of me was Mrs Don, in and out in a minute or so.

For the Conservatives, racism and Islamophobia (and a wide range of other forms of bigotry) are already factored in, it's not a surprise in any way.

OTOH finding our that the Labour party may have an anti-Semitism issue is surprising enough to be news.

There's an interesting point at the end of that one about how the Yorkshire Post, the newspaper which originally broke the story and which had checked it properly before doing that, was subsequently bombarded by angry readers who were furious that the paper had published "fake news" - after believing the online lies about it.

Direct link to the Yorkshire Post's follow-up story here.

I assumed the story was genuine, simply because the YP/YEP lean right, but are reasonably honest. If they published a story that made the Tories look bad, they must have checked it to Xmas and back, and printed it because it was true.

Dominic Cummings and Boris Johnson probably ironically but unironically play that behind closed doors. Although they must laugh at the sight of Ken Clark there.

The horrible thing is I'd say it's much worse this time around. God only knows what kind of twilight zone, upside down nonsense world we live in where I'm wistful for a thatcher victory but can I come back to the real world where things make sense now please?
