The Trump Presidency: Part 18

CNBC (Canadian): Trump abruptly cancels NATO news conference after summit turns sour:dl:

Hours before it was set to start, video emerged of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau caught on a hot mic apparently mocking Trump.
The best part of it to me at least was the fact that Boris Johnson was there, joining right in.

A lot of people have linked Trump and Johnson... both rather uncouth individuals, both ascended to power in questionable ways, with a similar appeal to a base of low-information voters in their respective countries. And supposedly they both have some sort friendship.

And yet, there was Johnson, joining in while other leaders mocked Trump.

(Although Johnson has gone on to deny that he mocked Trump, and has praised him since.)

If your worst nightmares becomes reality, owning a rifle won't do you a damn bit of good.

That's always been my problem with the Dem's "Oh things have gotten so bad it's time to start the revolution" rhetoric.

Do you really see that scenario going well for you Democrats? Do you see you winning that?

That's just more "We can't win so we'll write a nobility in defeat narrative."

The Dems have a much better chance against the Republicans politically then they do going all Red Dawn on them.

Sailed, circumnavigated the globe, and returned laden with fine silks, exotic spices, and half the crew dead from scurvy.

Then the ship slides out from beneath the clouds into the moonlight, and it turns out the silks are all rotted, the spices turned to dust, and half the crew are hideous undead. Oh, and there's a cute zombie monkey.

That's not a nice way to refer to Guilliani!

I'm not strong on presidential history but would you go with "there has never been a POTUS this overtly racist?
Would owning black slaves be “overtly” racist?
I guess it depends on whether you want to consider the context of the times.

Yes, presidents like Washington and Jefferson owned slaves, but unfortunately at the time it was considered normal. I am unaware of either of them wanting to expand the institution of slavery or make things worse. So their positions (at the time) would probably be seen as moderate. (I am not defending slavery or saying it was at any point in time 'right', just that people are a product of the time they were born in.)

Compare that to Trump... who's position on race relations is anything but 'moderate'. His rhetoric and actions (mexicans are rapists, can't trust hispanic judge, neonazis are 'fine people', keeping Miller around) clearly puts him on the more bigoted side of society. He's not some guy who just appears immersed in the standard thinking of the day. He is clearly only the outside of political norms.

If we're start "whatabouting" people across major cultural, social, political shifts discourse will be even more counter-productive then it is now.

We have to judge.... moral effectiveness within the context of the world that people live in.

But what about love? Don't you want someone to care about you? What about love? Don't let it slip away...

In North Carolina, it is illegal for them even to look at the problem.

Sad but honest prediction;

The next big Katrina/Andrew/Sandy storm that happens, one that does major damage across a wide area, we're probably going to start seeing the "Okay but... does it make sense to fix/rebuilt?" discussion happen on some level.

Did John Barron type that one up for him?

True. He acted childishly.

But so did Trudeau and the other three involved. I don't condone nor approve of what Trudeau did, it was petulant and asinine, to say the least. If you want to talk and laugh about someone behind their back in that type of setting, you do it in private behind closed doors. These people are supposed to be professional diplomats, they're supposed to be above this sort of behaviour out in public.

Just because Trump acts like an 8 year old, it does not give license for the rest of them to act the same way too.

The last thing this planet needs right now is a bunch of world leaders running around tugging on each other's ponytails for poops and giggles. This is a high stakes game they're playing (world diplomacy and alliances)... there's no room for error.

I hope the gang in Ottawa slaps his wrist good and hard for this one.
Justin T is no fool and a fair political player. I suspect he was very well aware that there were cameras and hot-mikes rolling at that point. And he played them for all that it was worth. Because the expected outcome was EXACTLY what he and a number of others wanted - thin-skinned Trump got all huffy, took his bat and ball and went home.

Is that a bad result? Imagine if Trump hadn't huffed off. The rest of the conference would have been a Trump whinge-fest with him soaking up all the oxygen in the room and everything going rapidly backwards. As it was, everyone else quietly got on with whatever serious stuff they were doing for realz, quietly behind doors and Trump's putrid green smokescreen.

This is another rule out of the playbook; act like a total full on twatdonkey full of nothing but rage, hatred, and stupidity, until someone around finally breaks and does something snarky, sarcastic, or "anything less then civil' and commence pearl clutching over how mean they are and invoking false equivalency.

Trump the twatdonkey has been played by the North Koreans, the Chinese, the Russians...everybody, because he doesn't realise they are grown-up adults and better politicians and deal-makers than he is.

The best scams are the undetected ones, and we are watching Trump get scammed time after time while he doesn't even know.
