It is patently silly to suggest that the optimal design solution for 21st century restrooms, changing rooms, or showers is also the best solution for communal settings such as prisons, hostels, etc. Unless you’re pushing sex-segregation across the board, it probably wouldn’t even occur to you that we need an all-singing all-dancing solution which fits every possible situation.
Surely we can agree that some reasons are much better than others? My mother used to attend women’s only Bible studies because of the ancient patriarchal prohibition on women instructing men. Is this sort of sex-segregation beneficial to society?

I’ve never yet seen a good argument against a patient saying she doesn’t want to get a cervical smear from an OB/GYN who has never experienced the procedure herself. Indeed, this seems like a fair and reasonable request. Are social justice activists arguing otherwise?

My yoga studio has men's, women's and one unisex toilet/shower/changing room. There are actually two women's changing rooms, one of which is very small. I could accommodate transwomen by letting them use the single unisex toilet/shower that is single use.
On the other hand if I were to turn the whole space into single use changing stalls/showers, I'd have to lose 2 showers and could probably fit in 7 changing stalls.
But it's a yoga studio. We have classes, so everyone comes and goes at approximately the same time. At most we'll have around 70 people coming at once (2 classes starting at the same time). Right now there's never any wait for the changing rooms because people can change together, though it gets crowded. There is a wait for the showers and some people choose not to shower rather than wait, but it would get worse if I lost 2 showers.
So everyone would have to start showing up earlier in order to get ready for class on time. Some would probably choose to go somewhere else instead, though as some people left the need to show up earlier would be eased and we'd reach some new equilibrium (with fewer people).
Alternatively I could get a bigger space. I'm in a building and there are more spaces available on my floor. Potentially in six months or a year the neighbours might move out and I could take over their space and increase my rent by one third and turn the whole space into changing rooms. That would probably give me the capacity to get people changing at the current rate (possibly more comfortably than at present). Given that I'd be serving the same number of customers but with increased costs I'd probably need to increase prices.

My work has a load of older buildings with mens, womens, and disabled.
All the buildings that have been built since about 10 years ago have toilets which are unisex, which is properly closed off cubicles, which contain a bog, a sink with a mirror.
The later actually seem to take up less space as you are not having to build two separate public rooms, and no massive opened out bit with sinks, in each one.

That makes sense to me, but I think the issue is different for changing rooms. The problem isn't so much unisex rooms, as the need for separate cubicles for changing in. In sex-segregated changing rooms that's not necessary and so you can a lot more people changing clothes per unit time in the same amount of space.
Toilets are different since, unisex or not, that already need separate cubicles. In that case if we're just looking at the efficiency of the use of space unisex toilets make sense (there are other issues that I'm not weighing in on in the post).

The ones at work are great for toilets, but I wouldn't want to have to try and change in one. Well I have, for indoor football, but she was a bit of a mission.
And then putting in showers always wipe out any space savings

McKinnon claimed that her testosterone levels were at an unhealthy low. I find this peculiar.
Why do we have anti-doping regulations for sports? Why not level the playing field by letting all the athletes, not just the cheaters, dope? Well, one of the biggest reasons is that it's unhealthy for the athletes.
So McKinnon is in the same boat. She's doing something unhealthy to her body in order to compete at an advantage. And she is at an advantage against women, because the male biological advantage doesn't disappear just by suppressing testosterone. And that's supposed to make us feel sympathetic to her? Yeah, no.

McKinnon is also lying about meeting the 2003 standard. First, that standard stipulates full sex reassignment surgery including castration which we know he has not had, and second, the dates are all wrong. He has said that he didn't begin to transition until he was almost finished his PhD and came out as trans after he'd passed his viva. I can't find the tweets right now but someone had researched it pretty thoroughly.
The title of his doctoral thesis is something like "Why you don't have to know what you're talking about". I kid you not.

There are some quite revealing pictures of McKinnon showing the abdominal flab in all its glory. He's pudgy. He's carrying way to much weight. No way is he fit. He's also a Johnny-come-lately into that sport - he did something else before transitioning. He's competing against women who are toned to the last inch and who have spent the last ten years shaving a few milliseconds off their times every few months. His progress in the sport from a standing start has been literally impossible for a woman.
No way could he stay in touch in an equivalent male race. He's mediocre-to-poor. But he's beating elite women on a regular basis. And when he gets pipped to the silver by a hundredth of a second he shouts out that this proves he has no advantage, because women can beat him. And then he tweets petulantly about how one of the two actual women on the podium didn't fling her arms round him for a group hug. He's a piece of work.
Boys of 14 and 15 years old are regularly breaking women's world records. Elite male performance is consistently 10% to 15% ahead of female performance across the board (varies with the sport). The only reason people like McKinnon aren't finishing way out in front on a regular basis is that they are nowhere near being in the elite category for their actual sex.
Someone posted an interesting video of the last leg of a mixed-sex 4x400 relay race - two men and two women in each team. All teams but one had put their best male runner on the last leg. One team, which had a particularly starry female runner, all sorts of championships in the women's individual 400 metres, put her on the last leg, hoping to get her away early enough that she couldn't be caught. It didn't work. She got away quite a bit earlier than any of the others on the last leg, but three of the men ran her down with ease. The video of the winning man overtaking her like she was standing still was jawdropping. And he wasn't actually as big a star in the men's 400 metres as she was in the women's, by quite a long way.
This is what's coming down the road when national sports bodies realise that the way to win a cartload of medals in the women's events is to "persuade" a few of their second-string men to self-declare as women. And don't think they won't do it. Look at the East Germans in the 1970s and 1980s. And this time it will actually be legal. Amateur dilettantes like McKinnon aren't giving anything like the full flavour of what it's going to be like when genuinely good men start transitining - for whatever reason.

If this is true, then the Russians and the Chinese are going to dominate all the women's events within a few olympiads. Not that Europe and the Americas won't try. I just don't think that even modern western wokeness can compete with good old fashioned national chauvinism.

Yeah, but he's claiming that his testosterone concentration is unhealthily low for a female. I don't think there is such a thing as an unhealthily low concentration for a female. There's a reference range of the concentrations usually measured in women, but I'm not aware of any adverse health consequences of someone having a lower concentration than that.
