The Trump Presidency: Part 17

Trump is an isolationist..don't forget where he got the "America First" slogan from...unless he sees a buck can be made by intervening.
Don't get me started on Trump turning US soldiers into a bunch of goddamn Hessians in Saudi Arabia.
Of course Trump probably would not know who the Hessians were....

No he isn't.
He is a Mercantilist.
He would happily send troops alongside companies to extract the wealth of other countries and bring it home.
That's the use of the military in Trump's mind.

I don't think Trump has political or foreign policy principles. At all. He doesn't read, he doesn't study and he doesn't listen. He flies by the seat of his pants and figures he can recover from any crash.

Personally, I'm convinced he pulled out of Syria for Putin.

... because there was nothing of value in Syria.
But remember during his campaign how he said he would have taken "the oil" ? And he wanted to have US companies extract resources from Afghanistan.
Trump might not know what a Mercantilist is, but he ticks all the boxes.

And God, his ego.
I have a problem with braggarts, period...I cannot stand them ...and Donnie is one of the worst I have ever seen.

This suggests that there are others in contention. You've actually seen some other braggarts as tedious and outspoken as Trump?

How would such a person live? Trump at least has the Secret Service to protect him.

Yeah, that's in line with how he wanted to invade Venezuela. The CIA straight-up said it was about getting the oil, too, in that case.

...but other then that he is dumb as dirt and, worse, will not listen or pay attention to those who are smarter.

It is worse than you describe. It is not just a refusal to listen to those smarter than him, it is a refusal to admit the existence of people smarter than him.

But that massive military costs America a lot in the way of other benefits. Such as healthcare for all Americans and maintaining an infrastructure that is crumbling.

Take a trip to Europe and China to see shiny new train stations and airports. Bullet trains, subways and spectacular highways and bridges. The US use to have the greatest transportation system on the planet. Now it is rivaled by third world countries.

Honestly... this is probably GOP slight of hand in action. They've done a heck of a lot to cause the problems that we have, whether directly or by sabotaging efforts to get things done - far too frequently at the behest of donors that want to buy public property and turn it to their own profit. Naturally, if things are going well, people would oppose selling public property off - but the equation changes if they're not going smoothly, because few people will have any idea why things got so bad.

Anyways, other news time!

Not Kidding: Hillary Clinton just cleared in emails case

Yup. Despite Trump's obvious desires, there's still no case against Hillary there, for the nth time.

Fox analyst on G7 site: 'This is about as direct and profound a violation ... as one could create'

Uh huh.

Here's the law that Trump seems to have broken, by the way.

Title 18, U.S. Code § 208. Acts affecting a personal financial interest.

(a) Except as permitted by subsection (b) hereof, whoever, being an officer or employee of the executive branch of the United States Government, or of any independent agency of the United States, a Federal Reserve bank director, officer, or employee, or an officer or employee of the District of Columbia, including a special Government employee, participates personally and substantially as a Government officer or employee, through decision, approval, disapproval, recommendation, the rendering of advice, investigation, or otherwise, in a judicial or other proceeding, application, request for a ruling or other determination, contract, claim, controversy, charge, accusation, arrest, or other particular matter in which, to his knowledge, he, his spouse, minor child, general partner, organization in which he is serving as officer, director, trustee, general partner or employee, or any person or organization with whom he is negotiating or has any arrangement concerning prospective employment, has a financial interest— Shall be subject to the penalties set forth in section 216 of this title.

MCCONNELL Calls Out Trump Over Syria!

Good for you, McConnell, and with only a couple inane lies mixed in! Now, maybe, just maybe, you could back up your calling out with real action?

Honestly... this is probably GOP slight of hand in action. I'm not sure I buy that. That said, I do blame the GOP. They just have cared more about the military and tax breaks than anything else.

Now I do think projects like the bullet trains in California are a mistake in that they were given priority. We need subways in every major city first. Priortize passenger miles I'd give fast track authority and nanage the construction nationally like they did in the 50s with the Interstates.

I also need to point out that party loyalty is so strong in the us that both major parties will get 40% of the vote no matter who they nominate. It the 20% who have made up their mind that decides elections.

And I think that I should point out that that's a dramatic and not especially accurate oversimplification, yet again. 40% of the people who actually vote may indeed be accurate, albeit questionable. As for that 20%, well... to be clear here, I'm going to point you over to Tsukasa Buddha's post in another thread where he cites 538.

Of special note from that -

But OK, one final point needs clarification here — maybe we’re being too literal: Maybe what pundits are really getting at when they talk about appealing to “moderates,” “independents” or undecided voters is the “middle-est” middle of the electorate — in terms of vote choice, partisanship and ideology. Maybe they’re talking about people who identify as moderate, independent and are still undecided on 2020 — the part of the Venn diagram above where all three circles overlap.

First, this is a really small group — only 2.4 percent of the electorate falls in all three buckets. And even this super small middle of the middle is … you guessed it … all over the ideological map. Rare as these voters are, anybody who talks about winning over undecided, independent, moderate voters should first address the question: which undecided, independent, moderate voters?

Please, don't tell us that we have to bend over backwards to appeal to that 2.4% of voters while completely ignoring all the rest and continuing to further their lack of desire to get involved at all.

I'm not sure I buy that. That said, I do blame the GOP. They just have cared more about the military and tax breaks than anything else.

Exhibit A: The Post Office.

Exhibit B: The Trump Era GOP infrastructure week efforts to literally just sell off our infrastructure.

Plenty more could be added, but those are both really poignant examples.

Now I do think projects like the bullet trains in California are a mistake in that they were given priority. We need subways in every major city first. Priortize passenger miles I'd give fast track authority and nanage the construction nationally like they did in the 50s with the Interstates.

To be clear, there's a difference between prioritization disagreements and massive irresponsibility/open corruption at the national level (see Elaine Chao for an example of rather obvious corruption when it comes to transportation, for example).

In fact, this entire disaster of a Presidency might be just because Obama made fun of him in 2011. Remember that? Trump looked like he was seething with rage.

To be clear (at least for me) I don't think that was a major motivation for him to run because I don't think he really expected to win but for his actions since the election? You're 100% right. Sometimes it seems like his ONLY motivation for some action (such as some deregulation) is to spite Obama

All so very distressingly true. But maybe it's more accurate that he "goes with his gut" because that's he *he* himself describes his as his decision-making process.

Because you spelled "Doral" wrong?

Good point. Sorry. My searches were for the best and top rated resorts in the USA. Doral doesn't make it on any list I've found so far. Maybe I should add Bed bugs to the search.
