Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

It's really pretty simple....Consume less, save the planet.

Disagree ?

Yes. It is:

Reduce
Reuse
Recycle

...and it should be in that order.

But relying on billions of people to decide by themselves to do this is utopian whereas it is more reliable to have governments put in regulations in a way that is similar to the banning of CFCs when it became clear what effect they had on the ozone layer. It would have been hopeless to rely on consumers to punish manufacturers by buying the most eco-friendly fridges.

Your CFC reference is a perfect example of how concerted government action changed the world. Unfortunately concerted action against climate change will cost trillions and populist, cowardly governments will not invest this amount without mass protests. This is why Thunberg’s movement is so important.

Unfortunately govts don't have a huge amount of way of controlling the first two.........Unless they don't mind being voted out for doing it.

I personally don't believe that the "Greta effect" will make much difference at all.

But holy crap, I still love to see how a little girl is triggering the crap out of so many conservative snowflakes. It's absolutely delicious.

Yes, and as I linked earlier it seems she has had an effect on the resent Austrian election.

Heard this a lot lately.

All it kind of shows is how much importance both sides really give to what she preaching.

Sorry mate. You might have to give me a free one paragraph lesson on that one as I don't follow it, to get your point.

Tried googling quickly, and getting mix of right winning...losing....winning.

It is a bit confusing, but then I have never been the brainiest.

:o

Both sides? There aren't two sides, AGW is a fact.

Being fact doesn't stop a large proportion of people not believing in fact.

If it did you wouldn't have conspiracy theories and people saying the Brexit referendum was a good idea.

I linked to it earlier. The Green Party tripled its vote and may form a governing coalition. They are calling it the Thunberg Effect. Not her, but the media.

Leaders should ignore her at their peril.

Cheers

Think that is pushing it on the Greta influence scale.

There is more to parties policies getting them a win than climate change.

In Aus they had the complete opposite affect in their election recently.

Polls showed everyone thought Climate change was one of the most important issues and then when they got into the privacy and anonymousness of the voting booths, voted in the bloke who was waving a bit of coal round in parliament accusing the opposition of being afraid of it, who everyone thought was a gonner.

I’m talking about the future not the past.

It was only in May. She was around.

But by all means pin the results of entire countries election on one kid, over acting at a UN meeting most of the population wouldn't have even noticed

People will believe what they want but AGW doesn't depend on people's beliefs, it is just a fact. To say there are two sides is to claim AGW isn't a fact.

I’ve just given you an example of one where they have. Other governments around the world have put in rules about single-use plastic bags in supermarkets.

There are probably a number of nudge initiatives that can also be used to change consumer behaviour regarding use of plastic bottles etc...

Why the knee-jerk nay-saying?

Good luck getting people to reduce

It's tough sell I know, possibly the toughest sell ever. The funny thing is that people aren't willing to reduce but begging their governments to make them reduce.

A case in point. In Canada we're looking at a single use plastics ban. People have the choice of carrying their own containers or cups or whatever, yet choose not to and when that ban comes into place, they may be forced to.

Refusing to make the choice to reduce just makes these Thunberg inspired protests kinda empty.

CFCs were pretty easy though. Did you even notice that they'd been banned ? Most people didn't know what was inside their fridge ( or Liquid Paper ) making it work and just carried on as if nothing had happened. Plastics, especially single use plastics OTOH.....
