Cont: Brexit: Now What? Magic 8 Ball's up

I'm not a violent person but a tiny part of me would really like to see whether Boris Johnson really would prefer to be dead in a ditch instead of asking for an article 50 extension.

Talk is cheap but with a gun to his head and a clear expectation that the person holding the gun is prepared to follow through would Boris Johnson, a Brexit opportunist, sacrifice himself for the cause ?

He might, but I think the ditch would object.

It is the end of the superpower, but not, I confidently believe, of the English nation. This constitutional mess will be surmounted sooner or later.

England will still be a nation, but at the moment we're a large global player. This is unlikely to still be true in a decade or two (depending on exactly what occurs over the next few months), and it's entirely self-inflicted, and based on stupidity, ignorance, bigotry, and greed.

What, like have the PM make references to 'Letterboxes", "Bank Robbers", "Piccaninnies" and "Water Melon Smiles". I think Johnson's ticked that box, it's just got somewhat lost in the ongoing plot of "Some Mothers do Ave a Consitutional Crisis while Trashing the Country"

Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer in what I was saying. Johnson has definitely said racist things, but it's not quite on the level of locking brown children up in cages after calling brown people "animals" and denying that they're human. Johnson made the "letter boxes" statement but, reprehensible though that was, it's not on the same level as explicitly calling for and trying to enact a total ban on Muslims entering the country.

England will still be a nation, a small modest Northern European nation, like Sweden, which also was once a great imperial power, at war with Russia and so on. There is no shame or harm in being a minor state, if it is content to be in alliance with other minor states, which at the present time England is not, I admit.

It's not a question of shame, it's a question of being economically worse off and losing the power that we currently have.

I think the decline (relatively) of the UK is inevitable but Brexit will hasten it and remaining could have allowed a continuing position of influence in a combined superpower.

It's been confirmed by the Scottish Government that the title of the document has changed from base case to worst case in between in being first distributed and now being made public.

No doubt the government will have a reason for this that will be swallowed up by the usual suspects, but we all know what the truth is.

To be completely fair, and knowing how some of these things tend to work, if by 'base case' they mean, this is what's likely to happen of we don't do anything and the plan is to take actions to mitigate it then you could argue that base case is effectively a 'reasonable worst case' (which I think it was then titled?).

I haven't read the doc so don't know if that would be a reasonable line.

Regardless you dont change the title of a document you have been compelled to make public.
if mitigation exists they should publish that too, they didnt

Do you also insist on calling Germany Deutschland and Holland Nederland?

Deutschland and Nederland is their official recognised name. When Burma became Myanmar we all agreed to use Myanmar. Likewise, Mumbai [=was Bombay], Beijing, Kolkotta, etc.etc.

The official name of the Falkland Islands is that.

To be fair to Vixen, John Nott's memoirs aren't the whole story.

And I quote:

Britain's Defence Secretary at the time, Sir John Nott, told me that although he knew that a French technical team was in Argentina then, its work was not thought to be of any great importance. British efforts, he insists, were mainly focused on stopping the Argentinians getting hold of any more Exocets. [The French supplied the exocets that killed 32 Brits - Vixen]

Had he, I enquired, asked Paris to withdraw the team? That, he could not remember. Overall, he added, the French did give Britain substantial help during the conflict.

But, does he, nonetheless, now feel a little let down by a nation that he had previously described as Britain's greatest ally? This was his response:

"We asked Mitterrand not to give assistance to the Argentinians. If you're asking me: 'Are the French duplicitous people?' the answer is: 'Of course they are, and they always have been.'"

Agreed. My apologies for making light of the seriousness if the situation in the US. Of course, if Boris saw utility in going down that path, I'm not convinced his good nature would be sufficient to stop him.
