India-Bigotry in India

This Tweet summed it up:

Hindu religion teaches to accept other people and to live together in peace. It is not allowing to create division in the name of caste or religion or the food you eat.

The bad news is, with such an overwhelming majority of Indians being Hindu, the zealots will get bolder and bolder and the attacks will get worse, unless moderate Hindus decide to take a stand, and I'd see that as deeply unlikely. I'd think standing up for diversity and non-Hindi values would be a fast track to just making oneself a target.

Islam is a religion of peace, too.

I always find that one a little hard to swallow.

As I've said many times, I don't discriminate on religions; they're all universally terrible. And see my avatar.

That's why it's nice to see this stuff shared around - hate someone based on what sky-daddy they believe in. Outstanding.

The thing is, pretty much every religion (probably except for Bahá'í) has its fringe extremists. There are extremist Christians and extremist Jews, but they do not represent the majority of followers of that faith.

Rather than saying "all religion is bad" I prefer to acknowledge that "extreme religion is bad", and that the majority of followers of most religions just want to get on with their lives.

Sky daddy, proving Atheists can be bigoted as much as Theists.

The fact is that Hinduism in practice is not homogeneous. Modes of practice changes from restate to state, region to region, village to village and even community to community. Dietary strictures against beef consumption for Hindus do not apply to non-brahmin Hindus in southern states. This is essentially the influence of upper caste dominant practices from what we call the northern "cow belt". The real agenda is of course an excuse for targeting the Muslims and the lower castes (dalits and tribals). In most cases it is buffalo meat, since a cow is more valuable for people when alive. It is only when the cow becomes non productive that it is culled.
Also, the largest abattoirs and exporters of beef in India are owned by upper caste Hindus and members of the current government.

That's no surprise at all - hypocrisy is the same flavour everywhere.

The Republican Party in the US actively courts racist voters by formulating campaign strategies to attract them......and then does it’s level best to deliver on its promises. While every Republican voter is not an active bigot, every active bigot is a Republican voter. They represent fully one-half the population of the US.

That’s right, at the moment racism on an institutional level is the policy of the executive branch of the government and the upper half of the congress.

I have no experience with India, but it doesn’t sound like your problems are much worse than ours.

It took one post to try to selfishly turn it from a thread about India into about the US and Republicans

That has to be a record

Lol

Where is a grip when you need one

Seems to me"The Man Who Isn't There" in the room is China, which has sort of a de facto alliance with Pakistan.
SO far China has other concerns, but can't see them ignoring this situation forever.

I didn't doubt you at all. It makes horrible reading. He's a professor, what did they expect?

Hard to know whether they're closer to the Khmer Rouge or the Gestapo at this stage.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting you did, sorry if it came out that way. I was just providing an illustration of the situation on the ground.

No worries - it certainly paints a chilling picture.

You look like the kind of bloke who reads a few books!
