I am sure Lincoln would join you in that. The party of Honest Abe has become that of Dishonest Don.
And guaranteed, Teddy Roosevelt would HATE Trump with a Passion. As would Eisenhower.

The more valid point is actually in lieu of a warning. We've written off the GOP numerous times. It won't happen. In a two-party system they just reinvent themselves.

The utter disdain the anti-progress GOP held for the working classes in the 20s and 30s should have cinched that particular funeral as populism took over America. It took them longer to recover and they needed a not-Republican to do so, but they reinvented themselves as philanthropic rich ******** and not greedy rich ********. The thing that saved them from the Nixon debacle is that the rank-and-file on the hill actually revolted against Nixon. But there was a hard-right shift going on in the party post-Goldwater, so what re-emerged in the form of the Reagan wing in 1980 was yet another re-invention.

They haven't reinvented themselves this time, post Dubya, but have had what was left of their party hijacked. The void that will be left after Trump goes down will be reinvented on Limbaugh and by Coulter and Hannity and Carlson. Look for Populism II, the New Improved More User Friendly Neo Cryptic Fascism coming to a campaign trail near you by about December of 2020. (I expect to see a lot of "Brown People Welcome" proselytizing from the talking heads. )

That the basic problem the GOP Has;How to you appeal to minorities without alienating the white nationalist who make up the core of your party?
IMHO it will be too hard a act to do.
 
BTW I think the importance of tomorrow's special election is being really overblown.
I think the Republican will win; which should surprise nobody in a red district.
There is less in this then meets the eye.

Or maybe, Trump has the unfortunate habit of walking into the memory care
unit of nearby nursing homes in the middle of the night. Turns out the launch
code for nuclear missiles and the nursing home key pad code for locked doors
have the same manufacture default code. Upon discovering hime missing the
White House sends out a staffer who fetches Trump from the nursing home,
but sometimes they make mistakes based upon the description given and
bring back the wrong guy. That why you occasionally get tweets that seem
wildly off from normal. I suspect one time they brought back a guy wearing
a tricorn hat, sticking his thumb in his chest, calling himself Napoleon.
Only after a comment by Ivanka at breakfast about Trump being smaller
than normal did they recognize the error.

Well, yes. :rolleyes:

But the understood process for Donny tweeting the longer tweets over multiple dot-dot-dot entries is for him to sit there and expound some profound thought or other, and have some staffer type it into the phone (or possibly a laptop PC), correct it for spelling and grammar, read it back to him for content and Donny's approval, and then post it. That way Trumpy can avoid the sillier spelling errors and **** that he normally does when posting even just a few words sitting on the can late at night.

This mode leaves open the very real possibility of security-lax Donny's tweet-feed being abused by the more nasty and scruple-free of his aides. And he has a bunch of those. So they make up this ****, get Donny's approval while possibly la-la-la'ing over the nastier bits, then post it. The clear difference is not just the correctness of the text, it is also the tone of the message. Some of the more recent ones could have come straight from the putrid brain of Miller. Donny takes stuff personally, and makes personal excuses, brags and threats. Miller is more of your eugenics and immigration policy architect. A very nasty piece of work, and nearly as insane as Donny.

And Taft, conservative as he was, was also anti-tariff and pro immigration and a few other things that would likely have gotten him chucked right out of the party.

Find a common "enemy" you can both hate. There may be some traction in Community A for making the Community B the bad guys and vice versa. The white nationalists are perfectly happy hating both communities and you might pick up a useful number of bigots from one of those communities.

Pick whichever gives you the most votes and press on (just make sure that it's framed as really, really hating Community B, not liking Community A in any way)

There's also still the question of whether he was behind Ross' decision to threaten NOAA, which, quite frankly, would compound the issue there.

So to sum up: A former NBC executive and Trump ally proposes the government monitor American phones and smartwatches to see which heavily armed malcontent is maybe just about to pop off, perhaps using blood pressure data or fabric swatches or how close you are to an abandoned cheese factory or whatever. Upon which the government will, in this bright new future, swoop in and stop them from doing it. Unless the government and its new technology gets it wrong, which it absolutely certainly will.

This seems uncomfortably close to a whole host of dystopian movies and novels, doesn't it?

I... don't think I really need to say much that wasn't already said there, besides that under a Trump (or nearly any current Republican politician, really) Administration, there would fairly certainly end up being a whole lot of "mistakes" that just happen to very disproportionately happen to black people, immigrants, and Democratic leaning populations.

Much of it—with Shea’s avid participation—has entailed making preparations for violence with guns and other weapons. “Their whole thing is, ‘The world is evil and the government is evil’,” a longtime Marble resident told her. “[They want] to get back to Puritan America.”

She described how Shea led workshops for young campers: “An exercise in field skills for youth, including (but not limited to): field strip and reassemble assigned weapon; orienteering, field dressing wounds, following orders, PT, shooting skill, etc.” He titled his after-dinner session “Going Underground.”

Right now they're all-in on trying to convince minorities that social services are a Democrat plot to keep minorities "permanently dependent" and embracing the GOP will make the American Dream really come true for them. At least, I haven't noticed any GOP minority-outreach efforts deviating from this message.

I know one. She was in another group I belong to until she got kicked out. She's a huge Trump fan. She has a blog called The Alternative Conservative. She would rant about how it's really the Democratic Party that are the racists and that African Americans are afraid to register as Republicans because of Dem reprisals. She believes that Dems keep them dependent on social programs like welfare, food stamps and medicaid in order to keep them voting Dem. Needless to say, she was a complete whack job.

So what ?

In a sane and rational world then this whole hurricane kerfuffle would have damaged President Trump's credibility and standing within the country slightly and caused those close to him to try to get him to modify his behaviour.

Instead not only do the GOP and his administration not seem to mind, but because his approval rating within the party is so high, this enhances his position. He's taking on the Poindexters in the NOAA and standing up for the great state of Alabama - MAGA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No his mental decline was obvious from the start of his campaign. Look at his interviews then vs in the 90's when he could still speak in normal sentences. This was simply not an issue for his supporters.
