I think if it gets more than 100,000 signatures it gets debated in Parlia...

Ah.

It was Ah for the last big one as well. Parliament held the debate in a Committee Room, and not one Conservative MP turned up for it. Six million people signed that thing.

We already know that over sixteen million people voted remain back in 2016. If the petition passes the seventeen million mark (and can be shown to be relatively free from voting bot influence) then it would show something new.

I wonder if you and the swivel eyed loons and gammon army would feel the same had TM used prorugation or some similar device to get her deal agreed?

Actually I don't wonder. We all know the answer to that.

Principles, like facts, for Brexiteers are things to be discarded when inconvenient.

Ah.

This is often misunderstood.

If a petition gets more than 100,000 signatures it is considered for debate. No amount of signatures will force a debate.

Are these debates carried on a public TV station by any chance?

It would be interesting to see all Parlamentarians agreeing the petition is right, submitting their counsel to the government, who then does the opposite.

In a normal country something like that would be a scandal, heads would roll. Figuratively, in this case.

The PM is adhering to written rules. If you don't want the PM to use the rules that come with winning, then win elections.

ETA: I feel like an American watching soccer (or even baseball). There are unwritten rules at play here. I'm a real rules literalist.

The written rules were written with unwritten rules in mind that were, at the time, considered binding. I doubt the rules of soccer or baseball specifically prohibit the use of jetpacks, but we understand that would be against the spirit of them.

The ROI has never been part of the UK. It was colonised. We can debate that, but the issue is that of the more willing long term members of the UK none have left. i suspect Scotland will be the first.

Edit: Nevermind I see the discussion moved on

Damn, you had my hopes up there for a while.

There is no such thing as an unwritten rule. If the rules permit jetpacks, then they permit jetpacks.

This is why I watch American rules football where all equipment rules are written rules (Antonio brown, deflategate, etc).

The Republic of Ireland was part of the UK from 1801 up until they left in 1921. There's no debate to be had here, you simply got your facts wrong.

Yes, there was one in Westminster last night.

Good start. Keep it up.

The trouble is that the Conservative government is dogmatically committed to delivering a no-deal Brexit. In the past large-scale demonstrations might swing sentiment and as a result change government policy but that's not the case here because the government is well aware that a no-deal Brexit is very unpopular (in a recent UGov poll, there was a 2:1 unfavourable:favourable view on a no-deal, though there was also a lot of undecideds) and simply do not give a stuff.

Whether it's a matter of political principle or a naked attempt to enrich themselves and their backers is irrelevant, no amount of protest could make them change course.
