Whatever the hows and the whys it worked for him and it has a strong chance of working for him again unless we learn to tap into it as well.

Again, all of this is also consistent with my hypothesis, that he appeals to their racism and bigotry.

I know you don't want to accept that it is that simple, and prefer to have to keep creating more and more nuance, but what I've said is also consistent with the data presented above.

I don't see nor expect the democrats tapping into the racism strategy.

It's not that I don't want to accept it, it's just that if it is just that simple... what's the point? We've lost already, unless you have some plan to fix racism in the next... *checks calendar* 502 days that you haven't shared with the class yet.

If "racists" are an election swinging demographic that we can't deal with because we can't sully ourselves what are we even fighting for at this point? Grab a bottle and we'll sit on the porch and wait for the end if that's all it is.

.

This is the problem. Too many people thought we HAD "fixed racism." Hey, we elected a black guy as president, right? Post-racism world.

Not.

The racists are still there.

My strategy? Put your hope in future generations to make the right decisions. We see evidence of it. Young people have no problem with homosexuality, for example. What got them there?

No, you aren't going to change the racists. But that doesn't mean you can ignore the role it plays. And, unfortunately, that group is far bigger than we would have liked to have thought in the Obama era.

The one thing that the election of Trump told me is that America has a very large number of ********.

If the Democrats try to court the "white racist" demographic they will fail because:

a) The GOP will do a far better job
b) They will drive away their core support

If you want an example of what not to do, look at the UK Labour Party with respect to Brexit. They adopt a pro-Brexit stance to try to attract a right-wing demographic who wouldn't vote Labour if their lives depended on it and in so doing they drive their Remain supporting voters into the arms of the Greens and LibDems who are both pro-Remain.

IMO what the Democratic Party needs to do is to make the "white racist" demographic electorally unimportant. IIRC President Trump got a lower proportion of the votes than Mitt Romney, the trouble was that Hillary got a much lower proportion than Obama did in 2012. A lot of people who voted for Obama either didn't vote at all, or voted for Jill Stein.

If the Democratic Party manage to find a candidate and policies which are genuinely inspiring to vote for then those electors will be brought back into the fold and the "white racist" demographic isn't that important any more.

I don't think it is. The trend for the acceptance of homosexuality is trending in one direction.

Right now. Who's to say in a hundred years or more?

There were times and places where it was more acceptable than it was 75 years ago. You might say now's a bit unique because of technology, but human nature doesn't change.

Yup

I am so sick of this lying *******.

He is bragging that there were 100,000 requests.

Hey, numb-nuts, why are you holding it in a 20,000 seat arena if there were 100,000 requests? You are trying to run a country and you can’t even figure out how to run a rally.
He can't risk the chance there will be empty seats. It looks bad.

Together, we are breaking the most sacred rule in Washington Politics: we are KEEPING our promises to the American People. Because my only special interest is YOU! #Trump2020

On no issue are Democrats more extreme – and more depraved – than when it comes to Border Security. The Democrat Agenda of open borders is morally reprehensible. It is the great betrayal of the American Middle Class and our Country as a whole! #Trump2020

In the ultimate act of moral cowardice, not one Democrat Candidate for president - not a single one - has stood up to defend the incredible men and women of ICE and Border Patrol. They don’t have the character, the virtue, or the spine! #Trump2020

Don’t ever forget - this election is about YOU. It is about YOUR family, YOUR future, & the fate of YOUR COUNTRY. We begin our campaign with the best record, the best results, the best agenda, & the only positive VISION for our Country’s future! #Trump2020

President Donald Trump kicked off his formal reelection campaign Tuesday night with a rally in Orlando. His 76-minute speech featured more than 15 false statements, many of them ones that he's repeated frequently in the past.
https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/19/politics/fact-check-trump-orlando-rally/index.html

That's one lie every 5 minutes.

I'm reminded of the lady at a townhall event, where the Republican congress critter (I forget the name, but he's the only one who has supported impeaching Trump) laid out the various crimes in the Mueller report, and she subsequently said she was shocked to learn that there was anything of the sort in the report. She certainly hadn't heard anything about them from her usual news sources.

I'd bet both she and the man I mentioned get most, if not all, of their news from FOX. After all, CNN and the rest of the media are all FAKE NEWS as Trump pointed out at his Orlando Rally.

While many of Trump's supporters are racists and bigots (there's a reason racist groups like Stormfront support him), not all are. They voted for him because they (erroneously) think he brought the economy back and for other non-racist/bigoted reasons. These are the people that the Democrats need to reach out to. Farmers, who have been hurt by Trump's tariffs, are a good example of those that need to be convinced to dump Trump.

Amen to that!!

I think the thing that annoys me more than the lies is the meaningless superlatives.
Not defending ICE is the ultimate act of moral cowardice? WTF?

I can’t find a transcript of President Trump’s Orlando speech on the White House website. Am I simply technologically illiterate or is it not there?

It's right there next to the list of Obama-era bills that will be posted for 5 days of public comment before he signs them and the list of energy company guys meeting with Dick Cheney.

That was only 20,000 brainless bigots (and probably not even that many) cheering on a brainless thug. You get more at a WWE event regularly. He claims it's something special to do this once.

There are more than 170 million Americans of voting age. THOSE are the people who need to be convinced he is a bad choice. Not this drop in a very murky, filthy bucket.

It seems to have been exactly this. As much as People of color - particularly black people - were blaring the air raid sirens, far too many white people shrugged their shoulders and said "No, we're post-racial!" or even worse "Blacks are the real racists, Obama said his son would look like Trayvon!"

And when we pointed out that Dolt 45 was a clear white supremacist, and that he was recruiting supremacists and white nationalists who desired to kill as many nonwhite people as they could, well, we got "He wouldn't do that!", "Take him seriously, not literally", "He's just saying that to play to his audience", and the like.

By the way, what does that last one say about his audiences?

And now we have concentration camps, and white supremacists tried to terrorize an entire college town. Oops! Turns out Hillary had slightly underestimated the percentage of people who voted for him that were "deplorable".

Too bad it took all of this for people to say "Wait a minute, there are bigots still running around!" But (white) people seem to understand en masse now. And it's being reflected in polls - the white nationalists are louder, but the (white) folks that were asleep have also taken note.

(Course, many white people immediately, and correctly, identified Cheeto Benito as a white supremacist back when he was pushing birtherism back in 2011, so it's not like it's a lack of melanin that causes people to miss all this. If you didn't pick up on it right then and there, you may want to consider why you missed such an obvious sign.)
