Trump immigrant family separation policy

Commonplace enough that she did it every school day.

Twice, I expect.
And that it makes it easy to confirm her story; ring the school, talk to her teacher, get the teacher to confirm her identity. Sorted.

This is a good example of the banality of evil. You detain a 9yr old child. You are just following the rules, you put her on the transport to the detention centre; what happens after that is nothing to do with you.

I've come to realize that our border services have far too many racists. Most likely they have had for a long time, but were held in check by previous administrations, instead of being encouraged like this one.

Here on our little chunk of the border, the CBP agents are mostly people from the area. Most of them are Hispanic.

The job attracts them. They get to be mean to brown people and get paid to do it!

In a car with an adult driving. It is not commonplace for minors to cross the border on foot without an adult.
True, but I suspect he mentioned the situation to the border agents, a situation that, had they thought a little, could probably have been solved without detaining a nine year old American citizen for a day and a night.

Which they only did because there was a delay in the auto crossing, and they didn't want to be late for school. So that TOTALLY justifies jailing a 9-year-old for 30 hours and lying to her and her brother despite having the proper documentation.

Ok, c’mon...do you really think a 9 year old crossing an international border is a commonplace occurrence? It’s not. Especially in this climate.
You don't know that.

Ever been to the border? There are a slew of pedestrians crossing every day at the main crossings. Someone (a US citizen no less) who lives on the Mexican side and goes to school on the US side has almost certainly been crossing everyday for quite a while, maybe years.

They let her brother go but some ******* customs agent didn't like how she managed the agent's inquisition?

You get over the border into the US side and jump on the driverless trolley to go wherever you are destined. I've been there, been on the trolley. And this kid almost certainly has crossed this border many times.

There was no reason the border agent could not have cleared this up but no doubt some confirmation bias got in the way.

It remains, of course, a bit speculative exactly who said what, and how the whole mistake was made.

I think a good exercise would be for some regular, all-American white kids to be subjected to the same kind of treatment, intimidation and assumption of wrongdoing that seems to be the norm here, to provide a baseline for "inconsistent information" and bad behavior. Maybe if you work at the border, you should be willing to volunteer your own little kids to do it, and have them videotaped for general education.

Of course put that way it sounds like a crazy, cruel, and inappropriate thing to do, which by itself says something about the whole procedure.
Only if you think a 9 yr old could stand up to an overzealous customs agent, which I see you agree.

Have you ever heard of the phenomenon of a person using documents that do not belong to them with the hope that the inspecting officer will believe they are the true bearer and admit them as a US citizen?

Would you believe that it is commonplace to ask questions of the person presenting the document in order to verify that they are who the document says they are, and if answers are inconsistent then it becomes reasonable to suspect the presenter may fall into the category described in the above paragraph? I believe such a person can be called an "impostor."
Oh come on, so any kid crossing must be trying to sneak into the country.

You are echoing the bias the current slew of border patrol and ICE employees exhibit. Bad judgement.

Did you fear mongerers about the brown people even bother to check?

Houston Chronicle: Mexican children cross border to go to school

Sep 20, 2013 · Getting a better education across the border. About 94 percent of the children at the school are living in poverty, and nearly all 570 students are considered English-language learners — classifications that entitle the school to extra federal dollars but create intense challenges in the classroom. This school year,...

Also with many of the walls well inside the US the people crossing at checkpoints can live on US soil and still go through this.

Now they are ending education, recreation and legal aid in their kids concentration camps.

"The Trump administration is canceling English classes, recreational programs, and legal aid for unaccompanied minors staying in federal migrant shelters nationwide, saying the immigration influx at the southern border has created critical budget pressures. The Office of Refugee Resettlement has begun discontinuing the funding stream for activities — including soccer — that have been deemed “not directly necessary for the protection of life and safety, including education services, legal services, and recreation,” said U.S. Health and Human Services spokesman Mark Weber."

I like how being able to understand people in the legal system or having representation that does is not necessary for the protection of safety.
