Anti-Muslim Terrorist Attack in... NZ?

To be honest, I think there is definitely some scope for a lot of the viewing to be down to shock and awe. Just as many people tuned in to 9/11 and watched the tragedy unfold.

I hope that that is taken into account.

What do you think would happen in most workplaces if someone started streaming Mexican drug cartels chopping people up to Funky Town? Or hardcore bukkake videos? And doing so when they are meant to be, y’know, working?

I think the context matters in these cases but if someone was being an asshat and saying “hey guys, check this out!” And traumatizing his colleagues, then he would be out the door and off to the clinic to get the boot removed from his bum hole faster than you can say, “but the absestoooooos made me do it!”

When I first started watching the events of 9/11 while living in London the the live mainstream TV feed was still showing people jumping out of buildings rather than being burnt to death, before they started a bit of editing the broadcast to tone it down.

To me it is down to timing and giving a bit of thought to pure, not so much natural instincts, but wanting to know what the **** is going on in an horrific moment.

We have had a few days now and much media coverage, so it's a lot different

What ? You want me to read your mind. I have no idea what you're proposing but if 10 years in jail is an acceptable punishment for watching a video then have at 'er mate, knock yourself out.

No, downloading or distributing, and up to 10 years. Someone merely downloading but not distributing is going to get a lot lower sentence than someone actually distributing it.

It's like the equivalent of child porn for New Zealand. But outside of that country it's just more slaughter gore to go along with many more videos which are even worse.

On the contrary, a lot of other countries are not going to be OK with it being shared within their jurisdictions. It would certainly be illegal to do so in the UK.

Mate, I'm no lawyer, but if the bloke in charge of the department says it's illegal for people to view it, I'll accept that. They don't make the laws, but they do decide which films break the law..

Yep, he can decide which films break the Law, but he cannot decide what the Law is or how it is enforced. The Law is black letter, it says possession and distribution are illegal, it is silent on the matter of viewing.

Only the Crown gets to decide on changes to the wording of the Law
Only Solicitors get to argue the Law
Only the Judiciary get to interpret the Law

David Shanks is not a Minister of the Crown, he is the Chief Censor; a Civil Servant. Despite what you might glean from Sir Humphrey Appleby in episodes of Yes Minister, Civil Servants do not determine what the Law is.

The only thing David Shanks decides is whether or not any film, book or publication meets the existing criteria to fall within the purview of his office under the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993... he doesn't get to set that criteria!

Why the faux outrage? Watching anything like this on the employer's equipment and/or time would have been classed as gross misconduct pretty much everywhere I've been employed over the last 25 years.

Absolutely.

I’ve had to remove or reprimand several employees over the last two decades for viewing unauthorized content, usually porn. I myself got hauled up in front of HR once when a benign image I clicked inexplicably set off the porn filter. Then there was this fellow who enjoyed beheading videos...

I hope so - I do and have said for at least 30 years that oppression is the perfect tool to breed hatred.

It doesn't forgive the action, and it certainly doesn't justify it, because it doesn't happen to every victim, but people behave differently and it makes the later actions understandable.

We can either choose to learn from these people or not.

And yet, some of the surviving victims have chosen to do just that!

Just reading those articles gave me a lump in my throat. I wonder how many of "us" white folks would be moved to do this if the roles were reversed?

Actually... I don't!

Unfortunately our intelligence services are just as prone to our cultural biases and so on as any other institution, plus they have to justify themselves to our politicians who will have their own political priorities and biases. I am however considering New Zealand's cultural past and past terrorism attacks surprised there was a complete lack.

Rainbow Warrior?

I would not be too concerned if you have watched that video, even in NZ.

https://www.classificationoffice.go...urch-shooting-video-officially-objectionable/ (yes this is the same link as in a previous post)

“I don’t think New Zealanders innocently caught up in the social media storm following these horrific events need to be concerned. The enforcement focus will likely be on those actively and maliciously involved in spreading this material, and taking actions such as deliberately distorting it to avoid blocks and detection software,” says Mr Shanks.

If MY government wants to infringe the rights of a few of this murderer's supporters in order to minimize the chances of something like this ever happening again then they can have at it as far as I am concerned.

Why do you assume that anyone viewing (or even distributing) that video would be a supporter of this piece of scum?

My dad is an "asbestos victim". He worked as a carpenter in the 50's and 60's, that stuff was everywhere back then, and he has asbestos fragments incapsulated in his lungs. Gave us one hell of a cancer scare when he got an x-ray a few years back. We'll hopefully be celebrating his 80th birthday this year.

And yet, here I am: Not a white supremacist, and not a mass murderer.

Yet.

That you know of.

Speaking for myself... I don't love Nazis because they might have gone through trauma earlier in life.

I may be out of touch as self employed, but I think it is a disgrace that summary firings are happening. A more obvious time for less speed and a general anmesty as people process the hazards of voyeurism under scrutiny of morally superior beings I haven't seen since 9/11.
I as either an employee or an employer don't want anyone working with me that thinks "I'm at work so this is an appropriate time and place to watch people being murdered".

Watching a breaking major news story is quite different from going looking for videos showing people being murdered a day later on work equipment, on your employer's time and so on.

I want the video available. We know the best method for advancing knowledge....open presentation of all evidence for peer review. We have access to the data on the higgs boson. We should have the data from the shooting.
