Anti-Muslim Terrorist Attack in... NZ?

Excuses, excuses, excuses!

Plenty of people have had tragedies in their lives. they didn't all go on to be mass murderers!

I wonder if Samson also makes excuses for members of IS who saw their entire families get blown up by bombs dropped from US drones.
Extreme late teen trauma could never predict mass murder, but mass murder does not come from a vacuum, and so it appears here. This individual has a macabre experience to process, something rewired his brain following.

I could live without odd children being cyber-bullied to suicide.

Ditto.

Hate isn't free speech, but it uses that as an excuse.

Nope, I'm not walking anything back.

Mate, I'm no lawyer, but if the bloke in charge of the department says it's illegal for people to view it, I'll accept that. They don't make the laws, but they do decide which films break the law.

Not that I imagine anyone will be charged for watching it, because it would be easy to do by accident and the cops have their hands fairly full at the moment.

Grant Robertson's going to have some extra cash for them in the Budget to cover the massive amounts of OT they're booking up.

This is word-salad.

I hope so - I do and have said for at least 30 years that oppression is the perfect tool to breed hatred.

It doesn't forgive the action, and it certainly doesn't justify it, because it doesn't happen to every victim, but people behave differently and it makes the later actions understandable.

We can either choose to learn from these people or not.

I can see how that would screw you up a bit. Pity he didn't decide to take his hate out on corporate Australia instead of a bunch of innocent Kiwis.

...this...is not good.

Entirely unsurprising considering what we have already discussed. We all knew this. But not good at all, and I suspect that we are going to be seeing a huge shake-up of our intelligence gathering agencies really ******* quick.
Unfortunately our intelligence services are just as prone to our cultural biases and so on as any other institution, plus they have to justify themselves to our politicians who will have their own political priorities and biases. I am however considering New Zealand's cultural past and past terrorism attacks surprised there was a complete lack.

It is now illegal for anyone in New Zealand to view, possess or distribute the video of the Christchurch attacks in any form, including via social media platforms. Link

Please not the use of the word view
I do have to ask, are there no videos that you think someone shouldn't be able view, possess or distribute under threat of being arrested, and if convicted imprisoned?

Now the tragedy takes out other New Zealand families and their providers. This is quite appalling as summary firings become rampant.

"Founder Steve Byrne says many companies had three to five employees who'd looked up the video at work.

He says their colleagues are surprised and upset to find out their workers were watching such a horrific video on the job.

Byrne says at least one person has been fired for watching the video while other employees were around - while others have been let go for sharing it with workmates."

Why the faux outrage? Watching anything like this on the employer's equipment and/or time would have been classed as gross misconduct pretty much everywhere I've been employed over the last 25 years.

The mass murderer's father hanged himself to be found by his son after being shafted by Hardie asbestos products incorporated.
There is a difference and that is the principle behind chaos theory, a butterfly beats its wings.....

Father's suicide because of Hardie Asbestos?

Well, if that doesn't make someone a white supremacist and an anti-Muslim bigot then...wait a minute...

OooooOOoooh, I get it now.

You're just burbling a load of bollocks in support of Herr Bogan.

Tend to agree even though as I have said, I doubt it will be a massive problem anyway

At my work for instance when you log onto your PC there is an actual long warning blurb basically saying by logging in you agree to not access objectional material

I may be out of touch as self employed, but I think it is a disgrace that summary firings are happening. A more obvious time for less speed and a general anmesty as people process the hazards of voyeurism under scrutiny of morally superior beings I haven't seen since 9/11.

Think the problem bit of the decision is it is retrospective

So "In theory" people can be done for distribution/viewing before it was officially made "Objectionable"

Purely personally. Think the viewing in the first couple of days would be incredibly stupid to chase up on.

The distribution in some ways almost opens up as big a can of worms

Now. You share it, you are an idiot and deserve to be dealt with. Viewing. Case by case basis, but a bit of leeway is required. People get sent links. People click on links

To be honest, I think there is definitely some scope for a lot of the viewing to be down to shock and awe. Just as many people tuned in to 9/11 and watched the tragedy unfold.

I hope that that is taken into account.

What do you think would happen in most workplaces if someone started streaming Mexican drug cartels chopping people up to Funky Town? Or hardcore bukkake videos? And doing so when they are meant to be, y’know, working?

I think the context matters in these cases but if someone was being an asshat and saying “hey guys, check this out!” And traumatizing his colleagues, then he would be out the door and off to the clinic to get the boot removed from his bum hole faster than you can say, “but the absestoooooos made me do it!”

The english version of Africa Addio is currently available On Demand TV and youtube. The Rhodesian reporting was shown locally (Rhodesia/SA) back in the day, and it too is available on YT (obviously)

<predant>South Africa didn't get a TV service until 1976, so would have only caught the tail end of the 1964-1979 Rhodesian Bush War.</pedant>
