That's some motivation.

Trump Tweets

Weirdo Tom Steyer doesn’t have the “guts” or money to run for President. He’s all talk!
Goodness. The current president is saying that not even all billionaires can mount a run. This should be a problem to be fixed, not an opportunity for gloating.

That just delays the inevitable, however, unless his successor pardons him. And even then, it depends whence the prosecution comes.

The only way I see him getting a pardon is if me makes an arrangement with Pence to step down then have Pence pardon him.

Exactly what I thought when I read it. It's a not-so-subtle hint that the man's an aristocrat, not a man of the people.

Which of course would probably cause the Republicans to lose the next election.

Hardcore Trump supporters might see it as "their guy" being forced out, and sit out the next election. Any republicans who might actually have some morals will look at Pence as "the guy who pardoned a crook" and likewise sit out.

Re: Trump wanting to stay president to avoid legal problems...

That just delays the inevitable, however, unless his successor pardons him. And even then, it depends whence the prosecution comes.
It may depend on the crimes he is accused of. Many crimes have a statute of limitations, and he may be hoping that he won't be prosecuted if he stays in office until 2024 because the time needed to charge him will have run out.

There is mention of Mueller's team getting a sealed indictment against Trump, which would get around the whole "statute of limitations" problem, because legal action would already have been started. (There may however be issues regarding the constitutional requirements for a "speedy trial".)

Of course, even if Trump realizes that jail time is inevitable, he may be thinking "my crimes will put me away for the rest of my life. Better to stay out as long as possible before facing justice".

If his own experts cannot get him to understand what a Memorandum of Understanding is, I doubt that they can get him to understand the conditions under which jail time is inevitable.

The man has lived his whole life bending and breaking laws with no serious consequences. I strongly suspect he sincerely believes he is above the law.

.

ETA: It feels so weird to use the word sincerely when talking about President Trump.

Following that failed stand-up routine at CPAC, most of us out here are no longer bothering with evaluating the impact of Trump's popularity poll numbers. Instead, we are wondering: What the actual **** is wrong with your president??! And do you have a backup?

Some of the footage I saw of Trump at CPAC was the most bizarre thing I have ever seen. I can just see that footage in commercials of his opponents.

The man is batcrap crazy.

That won't help him if New York’s Department of Financial Services go after him, and it looks very much like they are...

And remember, these are the guys who levied a $425m penalty on DeutscheBank for carrying out a Russian mirror-trade money laundering scheme.

https://www.bloombergquint.com/markets/deutsche-bank-settles-n-y-mirror-trade-probe-for-425-million

They have a very large amount of clout, and while they have no direct jurisdiction over Trump or his businesses, they can refer any criminal activity they find to New York prosecutors. These would be state charges. POTUS, whoever it was, would not be able to pardon Trump out of this one.

Looks like Kushner wasn't the only member of the Trump clan who managed to get a high-level security clearance, despite opposition from security experts.

From: https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/05/politics/ivanka-trump-security-clearance-pressure/index.html
President Donald Trump pressured his then-chief of staff John Kelly and White House counsel Don McGahn to grant his daughter and senior adviser Ivanka Trump a security clearance against their recommendations.... after concerns were raised by the personnel office, Trump pushed Kelly and McGahn to make the decision on his daughter and son-in-law's clearances so it did not appear as if he was tainting the process to favor his family.... After both refused, Trump granted them their security clearances.

Remember the good old days, when Hillary's personal email server was criticized because it risked security? Now you have the president handing out security clearances to family despite recommendations not to.
