Do you patrol the stands for fans who sit during the anthem? Keep their hats on? Talk during the anthem? Drunken slobs who wander to get beer during the anthem? Are those all attacks on the flag, fallen heroes and vets?

Did you email Jerry Jones and express your outrage at him for wearing his hat during the playing of the anthem at practice?

Kneeling is even an affirmatively respectful gesture. He even sat before having a conversation that kneeling was a more appropriate gesture.

The cop was in uniform and I am pretty sure Williams turned around when the officer yelled at him and he wasn't shot in the back. But it was beyond a stupid stop and interaction. The cop did EVERYTHING wrong.

Oh we agree on that - and whether or not the guy managed to turn around isn't really an issue. I'm just saying I thought you were discussing things you saw while doing ride-alongs, until I recognized one example as one that went national.

I get why you misunderstood. I could/should have been more clear.

What I saw on ride-alongs is how cops are treated by the public. It can be pretty ugly on so many levels. From absurd requests from citizens to attacks by the victims that called for assistance. The job requires a lot of patience and tolerance of abuse. I also saw that manifest itself in an attitude from police that I don't think serves them or the community well.

Um...Rahm Emmanuel, same guy who covered up the Laquan McDonald shooting until after he was reelected, who took money from public schools, and basically ended up forcing kids to walk unescorted through terrirory of various rival gangs?

Same guy who closed mental health facilities and community centers, in order to help with police academies and IIRC jails (also, Obama's library location is turning into quite a controversy, from what I've heard, due to funding of land and location)? Who saw murders increase against US records? Who did next to nothing to help reform a PD that, among other rather recent scandals, held people in unlisted sites and ran a "wire a car battery to his testicles" torture room? The guy that has people marching in the streets demanding better schools, better policing, and yes, less gang violence as well?

That's the guy you like? But you're mad at Kaepernick for...kneeling instead of standing as per a flag code that is routinely violated anyway, and donating to various charities? And Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown...who were victims more than heroes anyway (and in Martin's case, clearly doing nothing wrong and don't even bother arguing that with me anybody I am not interested in your black brute racist fantasies)

ETA: and that's the stuff I've heard, from people who live there, while I'm in on the east coast.

I mean, okay, if that's how you want to be, then you do you, but I get the feeling you'd be one of the people cheering on Bull Conner, Lester Maddox, and George Wallace back in the day. You know, the guy who cheers police, even when they're clearly acting as the bad guys, on video, broadcast to the world.

But that's just me.

Rham turned out to be just another corrupt Chicago Politician
I usually vote Democratic, but I am the first to admit that the Democratic Party in Illinois is a disgrace and hopelessly corrupt. It "Machine" politics at it's absolute worse.I hasten to add the GOP in Illinois is no better.
And, yeah, I agree our poster from Brooklyn' racism is showing through. He seems to suggest that the way to handle the Chicago violence is to basically tell the police to shoot down anybody who looks like the might be a gang member.
The whole problem with the issue of police shootings is too many on both sides make judgements that are not based on facts, but on making it fit a political ideology Me, I am not going take Black Life Matters opinion as law;the same goes for the Police supporters. I will wait for the facts to come out. Case by case basis, folks.

Biggest problem I have with ride alongs is a pratical one;if a situation gets violent..like a holdup..the last thing a cop needs is to have to worry about the guy ridiig along. I am all in favor of more scrutiny of the police, not sure that ride alongs is a solution.

Kaepernick is the new Civil Rights Hero of the Left, joining Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown. It's sad all you have is people like this to put up on the Progressive Mount Rushmore. Why can't the left find real heroes instead of creating them with fake news and lies? There are so many bullets flying in Chicago that Rahm Emanuel is throwing in the towel. The only solution is for police to get the bad guys, but lefties don't like the police so the drug gangs win big and fake news will pretend he wants to spend more time with his family or some other such nonsense.

So let's give the cops the right to be judge, jury and executioner?
I think that is what you mean by "get the bad guys".

Though I wonder if "bad guys" is just not a polite eupheism for "young black men".

It's a bit surprising to see Nike and the NFL join Kaepernick and the drug gangs against the American Flag, fallen heroes and Vets, law enforcement, and the safety of our citizens. I'll only be watching the Cowboys this year, and I've been a big NFL fan for a long time. That way I can root against whatever team of kneelers they are playing.

Gee, I though they were just protesting questionable shootings by the police........
Of course you probably think the police should have the right to shoot anybody on sight they think suspicious..partiuclry young Black men who are all probably gang menbers anyway.,,,

Jerry was protesting the unfair treatment of men who wear silly wigs.

Not to be confused with men who were fabulous wigs. That is perfectly acceptable.

They are very clear what you are to do and not to do. You sign waivers and you stay the hell out of the way. But they serve a purpose. It teaches people the realities of the job. What it is really like.

I love all these superpatriots who think that the way patriotrism consists in suppressing any opinions they don't like.
Irony is I question if the kneeling protests are an effective way of getting the message across...when the fuss becomes more about the means of protest then the issues involved, you have to rethink it..but now I support the kneelers on simple First Admendment grounds. I think they might be mistaken in the way they protest, but they have every right to do so
And notice how the die hard Trump supporters here seem not be very interested in basic freedom and liberties. But then neither is Trump. People with a fascist, authoritarian mentality usually aren't.

Although it was published some 50 years ago, a couple of cops I know say Joseph Wambaugh's "The New Centurions" is the best, most realistic novel published about beind a cop. The 1972 movie does not come clost to doint it justice.

As a loyal 49ers fan, I hate the freaking Cowboys with a passion anyway.

You really are no better than your ideological opponents.

Sadly, Travis often becomes a Bizarro version of the people on the right he hates so much.
He really, really, hates the police with a passion. IMHO that makes him no better then the people who think that all young black men are gang bangers.

Lost in all the fuss is that Kapernick was going to be traded by the Niners even before he made the protest;he had obviously going downhill as a QB since his Superbowl appreance.
I think he has slipped from being a first rank quarterback to Journeyman, but he would make a good back up QB for a first rank team and probably a Starting QB for a lower tier team then several of the leadings QB's out there.

As a Seahawk fan I hate both.

As a non-Cowboys fan stuck in a town focused 100% on the Cowboys, I appreciate your feelings.

ETA: didn't mean to leave you out Kookbreaker.

Also, I don't really hate the Cowboys, I just hate their General Manager. And the owner for not firing the General Manager, too.

I saw the movie which I liked, but I never read the book.

The thing about policing is that it is this monolith of ideas practiced differently by every guy on the force. My best friend and his best friend on the force are two college educated screaming bleeding heart liberals in a sea of Fox news cops out of the military. My best friend does his damndest not to write tickets although he has a couple of infractions that he doesn't hesitate to write. You never want to have him see you park in a handicap spot. The joke on the force is that he is the cooler. Chills pretty much any tense situation.

I've heard him go on and on about the absurdities of court. How poor or working class people without lawyers get convicted of DUI every time and rich guys with attorneys NEVER EVER get convicted. He talks about the homeless a lot and about how clueless citizens are about it. He told me about how this Yuppie couple wanted a homeless guy arrested for plugging his phone into their outside AC outlet. He had to explain to them why that wasn't a good idea while thinking how selfish they were.

I get annoyed with people who paint cops with a broad brush when they dont have a clue about who they are and what the job entails.
