Great point, making a note of that.

During Lee's invasion of Pennlsyvania, the Confederates troops made a point of seizing black people,on the grounds they must be runaway slaves. Something the Neo Confederate don't like to talk about.

That's just too much.

I talked to my buddy last night, a decent fellow and a rabid football fan. He's opposed to kneeling, and I couldn't convince him that he's wrong, but he is no racist.

People have different perspectives about injecting politics in sports events. They are not all racists on this basis.

How do you reconcile him being "decent" and yet being in favor of police brutality of black men?

With all due respect I don't believe that for a second.

The guy with the pickup was in Oregon! One of the bluest most liberal states in the country. Sure, this gun toting, bible thumping red neck Trump supporter was displaying a confederate flag because he was a proponent of 'state's right's.

I think you meant to say "Home to a couple of super-blue cities in a huge sea of deeply-red farmlands". Too many people forget that the eastern 2/3 of the state exists (and the swaths of land between the cities in the western valley). It is a deeply divided state.

That's just the land. You could say basically the same thing about Washington and California. The point wasn't to point out the geography, but the demography and that those waving the Confederate flag are not likely to be doing it to support 'state's rights'

For some, it was. For a great many, it was simply about having someone to look down on - or a fervent belief that one would, at some point, join the wealthy slaver class, and thus simply overlook the laws being put in place that work against you.

Stares intently at current republican voters

You beat me to this. Not many know that Oregon's original state constitution required all black people to leave the state, and the state refused to ratify the 14th and 15th amendments. Anecdotally, my transgender son went to Portland State freshman year and was accosted on a bus for being gay. Portland is the whitest large city in the US, and there have been some highly publicized hate crimes the last couple of years.

There is always risk. But say what you want about Nike, they know how to market.

I dunno, Nike really seems to be regretting all of th-

The world's largest shoe and apparel brand, which got the attention of the world by utilizing the quarterback-turned-activist in advertisements published on social channels on Monday, is scheduled to debut a "Just Do It" commercial during the NFL's regular-season opener featuring the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles on NBC on Thursday night.

The ad is voiced by Kaepernick and features him, along with NBA star LeBron James, tennis champion Serena Williams, New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., marathoner Eliud Kipchoge and skateboarder Lacey Baker, and inspirational athletes such as NFL linebacker Shaquem Griffin, wheelchair basketball player Megan Blunk, boxer Zeina Nassar and legless wrestler Isaiah Bird.

In a way, they are doing to Trump what he does to others. They are going to get a massive amount of publicity over this and yes, some of it will be negative. But I think they WANT the controversy...because it is publicity and all publicity is good publicity. If you count the number of times, the media said the word 'Nike' over the last 3 months and the number of times it will be said in the next 3 months, you'll get why they are doing it.

It's a kick ass ad.

Of note: Highlighting Lebron James is a direct middle finger at the same people that are angry at Kaepernick, and I like how they very clearly aimed the "greatest athlete ever" comment at Serena Williams (I've heard quite a few people say the same about her).

What it comes down to is that Nike is a maker of all kinds of athletic wear, and they're more interested in the younger, more active buyers than in the angry old guys that call into AM sports radio to whine about how "entitled" black athletes are. They wear more Nike stuff, and they wear more Nike stuff *out*, thus requiring them to replace them. They likely care more about fashion and political statements as well.

I dont think Serena is the greatest athlete ever. She's one hell of a woman's tennis player, probably the best ever. But the best athlete ever? Nah. But no question, this is an appeal to people of color without being too blatant about it. I love how the ad is political and also not political at the same time.

Who do you personally put higher?

Nike knows exactly what they are doing. Check out this ad that is playing in Mexico (you don't need to translate the Spanish to understand the ad):

Es nuestro momento. Movamos la ciudad. (It's our moment)

They even have the guy whistling a cat call get smacked-down by the crowd.

Yeah, and they are really seizing the day for those kids sewing their shoes together.

The piece of **** wore anti-cop pig socks.

Put a swoosh on that, Nike ya dumb *****

Again, regardless of personal opinion, it's an argument that's been made many times before, as a google search can confirm for you. I suspect a large part of it is her sheer determination - bounces back from childbirth, near-fatal illnesses, and gets right back to crushing her competitors.

(Also, it's not just people of color, it's black women, specifically. There's a reason black twitter goes wild whenever she plays, why she just shows up in Beyonce videos, and so forth.)

She's AMAZING! She's a much more powerful player then any other woman I've ever seen play.

But I would have difficult time saying an athlete who doesn't play against the best is the best. Serena is as I said, the best female tennis player in the world, probably ever. But she wouldn't be in the top 100 tennis players in the world if she was playing against the men. This isn't a knock on her. But the speed and power of the men these days is a notch above even her powerful game.

Compare the speed of Serena's serve and groundstrokes to say that of Isner who was seeded 11th at the US Open and was beaten by Del Prato. I wouldn't want to take a damn thing away from that extraordinary woman and athlete. But best ever? Sorry, that dog won't hunt.

Why don't you keep it up? They will only sell more jerseys and shoes. Nobody cares about Gramps saying to 'get off my lawn.'
