You're perpetuating one of the conservatives' favorite falsehoods. "They wanna take away our guns!!!"

"Gun control" is not the same thing as "opposition to gun ownership". Many "progressives" own guns.

You're talking about my BIL there. He voted for Trump even though he admits Trump is a disgusting pig. Why? Cuz Hillary and the Dems are gonna take his guns away!!

I had to make it a rule not to talk politics with him in order to keep harmony in the family. I have a very low tolerance for stupidity.

Proof that Trump has taken the term "Going Full Retard" to a whole new level:

Donald Trump decries ‘polls are fake’ seconds before boasting about poll numbers

"If the fake news did a poll, they’re called suppression polls, you know polls are fake just like everything else,” Trump said. “If the fake news did a poll they would show that I’m only getting 25 per cent with the 401(k) people even though they’re up 44 per cent."

"They just came out with a poll, did you hear?” Trump asked the crowd. “The most popular person in the history of the Republican Party is Trump. Can you believe it?”

The president paused before adding: “Does that include honest Abe Lincoln? He was pretty good.

All the gun owners in my county knew Obama was taking their guns away. Stockpiled tons of ammunition for 8 years. The gun industry never had it so good.

After watching the video of the rally last night and those morons going after Acosta, I stand corrected. I think Jukes and Kallikacks is more accurate.

And now I feel bad. "Jukes and Kalikaks" are just made-up names used in spurious studies that pretended to show the heritability of criminality and feeble mindedness.

Trumph ralliers are much worse than that: they CHOOSE to be ugly, stupid, squalling mobs-in-embryo. Their culture of ignorance is intrinsically a weak one, and would die out if they didn't purposefully labor to perpetuate it.

Take it from a former member of the rural proletariat. I know my people.

Christ, I hope I'm a former member. Sometimes ancestral voices speak to me, and I almost want to shove in a clip and go harvest some Kalikak hides to nail to the cabin wall.

And yet...and yet...no legislation was ever introduced to take anyone's guns away. Better background checks? Yes. But the vast majority of people support that. Don't let the mentally ill have guns? Yes. What person in their right mind could oppose that? Oh, dear. I think I just answered by own question.

Yeah, it was interesting to hear this constantly when nothing was happening. When I would ask exactly when all this was going to happen, it was always "just wait," for years.

Yes, they were pseudonyms but real people.

When I see the way those people at Trump's rally behaved, I just despair for the future of this country. I know the saying that when you mention Hitler, you've lost the argument. However, when I watch old films of Hitler rallies, I don't see much difference between the two. The hatred and demonization of anything and anyone not pro-Trump is overwhelming. When I hear Trump call the media the "enemy of the people", I hear Stalin. When I hear journalists and the news called "fake", I hear every dictator who then goes on to control the media.

In the antebellum South, the most vehemently racist people were usually poor whites who did not even own slaves. Why did they support the slave system that really DID take their jobs away? Because it gave them someone to feel superior to. As long as there was someone who was held in even lower regard than they were, they could feel better about themselves. It's the same with Trump's base who tend to be lower income white males. Illegal immigrants and Muslims are their new Blacks.

They believe what the want to believe. Facts just don't matter to some people. It's like Steve Cortes just claimed on Cuomo that "95% of the problems at the border would be solved by the Wall". When pressed as to where that number came from, he dodged and swerved and did everything but answer where it came from. In other words, he simply made it up. He lied. Facts don't matter to the True Trump Believers. If it's not what they want to believe, it's false.

Oh man... we're awash in them here in Coos/N. Bend.
The main drag, for much of the rural coast here is Hwy 101.
I went driveabout over to the east side of town last week and spotted a small "dispensary" called "High Way 101"... logo complete with the state hwy shield design. Well played guys, well played. [emoji14]

You're from Coos Bay? I spent about 3 weeks in around there the last 2 years. I love Charleston and Bandon....not to mention the dunes. I was hoping to head your way in a couple of weeks.....But I'm more partial to Brookings and Gold Beach.

As bad as Trump is, he's not Hitler. But he certainly has borrowed propaganda tactics straight from Hitler and Goebbels though.

Well, Sarah Huckabee just said "When you bought beer and wine, I'm sure you had to show ID." Once again, moving the goalpost.

It's Trump having a Bush Sr. white privilege moment. Arrest Donnie at his next rally. Empty his pockets. There will be no money. Other people need money. He pays for nothing directly. Like Bush being awed by scanners, this is Trump's indication as to how far divorced from the feebs who support him he is.

(He also thinks a credit card is "ID".)

"Gun control" is not the same thing as "opposition to gun ownership". Many "progressives" own guns.

Honestly, "gun safety" or something similar works just fine, too. "Gun control" is just one of the more contentious subsets of that and is decidedly less encompassing of the actual goals and desires at hand. "Progressives" mostly just don't want all these quite avoidable deaths to happen, after all, very much including the suicides.

Question: Could Obama have shut down Trump early by reacting with immediate outrage when Trump first accused him of not being American (which many understood really meant "this n-word don't belong in our White House)?" An ex-Obama staffer said recently that the traditional political practice was to ignore crazy charges rather than give them more weight by responding. But in the internet age, that just allows them to gather more weight and power. This went on for years, and then Obama looked weak when he finally made a special request to Hawaiian authorities for his original birth certificate. If he had handled it differently, would Trump have gotten any traction?

On a related point, pre-trial motions were heard today in the Alex Jones defamation case. He is being sued by a few of the Sandy Hook victims parents. Jones heavily promoted that it was government hoax and that the children were actors. Today, his lawyers asked that the case be dropped because it wasn't defamation, but protected speech.

I think this is an easy call. It's not protected speech. These parents and their children are not political actors or public figures and Jones acted with malice. He knew what he was saying had no basis in fact, he just pulled it from his ass because the crazy right wingers would eat it up.

Just a wee bit of a pedantic correction:

Trump got his propaganda tactics from his mentor Roy Cohn, who got his propaganda tactics from Hitler and Goebbels.

Remember... Trump doesn't read.

Who knows? If I had asked Julia Roberts on a date 30 years ago, would we be married now? The road not taken is just that. We will not nor can we ever know what was down that road.

In all fairness Goebbels and Hitler didn't invent them either.

Trump gets mental gratification out of stirring up the crowd. It is dangerous, especially the more stress the Mueller investigation causes him, the more he turns to these rallies to soothe his ego.

At some stage, if it hasn't happened already, like any addict, it will start to lose its effect. The people arranging his fix must surely have considered this.

More international summits with Kim/Putin/Duterte/Rouhani? Then what?
