Would it be OK to just torture the parents? Because that's what this is. There is no good reason for the separation policy, except to act as a deterrent by illustrating the U.S. is willing to torture people.
It's not done anywhere else and *faith leaders are not on board with this*.
One of the worst parts is that there is no clear procedure for reuniting families. Even if the parents wanted to take their children and leave the country, they can't. They are in the pipeline for an asylum hearing, but that takes weeks, and they can't find out where their kids is held. There is no procedure for allowing family conversations. Asylum seekers cannot present themselves at a port of entry because the ports are "closed." 3-, 4-, 5-year old kids are being told they'll have their day in court, but in the meantime, no, they can't see their mommy, can't talk to her. People are being deported without getting the kids back and what is their recourse? There is none. They have an order to leave; they don't know where their kids are, or even how to start. And all of this is complicated by the fact that the kids are being held by a completely different federal agency, Health & Human Services, vs. DHS.
They really ought to tattoo these kids, or microchip them, or something. Because how many 5-year-old are going to know how to find their parents? The government is offering no clarification on how these reunifications can take place.
Well certainly it might help people believe it's not worth fleeing El Salvador because the United States is worse. Torturing parents for no reason except that they can.
And through all this Trump blames Democrats. At least he knows it's a bad thing. Sessions is a straight-up sadist. Double down cubed. I hate to see this happen to more people but maybe it has to get to tens of thousands to reverse the policy.
