Senator Al Franken Kissed and Groped Me Without My Consent, And There’s Nothing Funny

I don't think it's all the other women coming forward about Weinstein et al; I think it's specifically related to the Moore allegations. Entirely political. A distraction.

And before you ask, yes, I think the timing of the Moore allegations is political as well.

I have basically assumed that Moore was something of a perv. I have not really paid attention to the story beyond the headlines; for me it's like reading about Big 10 football. I guess it is odd that all this stuff is coming out now--he has been a national figure for a long time.

As for the Franken incident, I guess I can see how on a national basis it helps the GOP for a few days by taking the focus off Moore. But it would have been a lot more helpful to the party if it had come out prior to Franken's razor-thin 2008 win over Norm Coleman.

And they do. Problem is, we don't know if Tweeden was actually assaulted. However, point taken, every accuser has a right to be heard.

There are a few strategies to deal with this. Al Franken can stay and have an ethics investigation, to which he agrees to fall in line with the conclusion of that investigation. He could resign now and let himself be replaced by another person assigned by the gov of his state.

The first option is what he's doing, and it's perfectly reasonable. He is putting himself at risk but it's still a right the to do. The second option is reasonable as well, but runs the risk of giving Republicans a new tactic to use against Democrats, which is to find the most obscure cases of improper conduct and raise hell, to distract from the extreme conduct in their party.

I think it is brilliant....if nothing else surfaces.

No question, Franken made a mistake with the picture while Tweeden was sleeping, but the accusation about the kissing during a rehearsal could easily be a misunderstanding. This isn't Louis CK masturbating many many times in front of assistants. It's not Bill Cosby drugging and raping women. It's not Harvey Weinstein. It's not Judge Moore chasing teenagers while in his thirties.

Franken still has I believe 5 more years left in his Senate term. If this all there is, i think he can easily weather the storm.

Just to remind everyone, why the 'no corroborating evidence' matters:

Roy Moore: Everyone Knew Roy Moore Dated High School Girls, Says Former Colleague

Harvey Weinstein: Miramax insider: 'Everybody' knew about Weinstein's behavior

Kevin Spacey: Kevin Spacey is another ‘everyone knew’ — who else does Hollywood know about?

Notice a pattern here? Wonder why we aren't seeing the same "everyone knew" about Franken?

The fraction of single offenders is likely non zero. Ithe possibility cannot be eliminated from there only being one reported instance.

Strawman plus hyperbole, a twofur.

Franken has a long reputation of supporting women's rights. And his immediate apology fits that reputation.

Tweeden's accusations fit one person, her personal perception, and other evidence suggests her perception might not be perfectly reliable.

Everyone's on the bandwagon here, if a woman says it, it must be true, the total picture be damned. How dare I actually look at the whole situation.

I will not be changing my avatar.

What a bunch of nonsense. What Franken and Tweeden have done in the past is irrelevant. His behaviour was wrong and he admitted as such, why can't you?

I've stated and explained my POV on this issue. And fortunately I have no need or desire to address people in this thread whose only argument is they don't agree.

Her perception might not be “reliable.”

Nevertheless, Ms. Tweeden persists.

This is totally ridiculous and out of proportion. The pearl-clutching by conservatives is all theater. We'll get a couple of Oh Mys and Oh Dears for emphasis, but these are people who didn't break a sweat over the Roy Moore allegations, which are about ten times more serious and people who voted Trump into office in spite of much worse and much more demeaning behavior,.... a history of it in both cases (Donnie Johnny and Judge Roy).

The Franken "crime" is more of a social-trespassing one. It was grossly inappropriate but the picture is obviously a put-up job and he's mugging for the camera. I've touched breasts (yeah, I have) and you don't do it like a Vaudeville comic, doing the old Bennie Hill "honk honk!". He's obviously aware of the camera and acting like a sophomoric idiot. Gee, guys behaving badly? Color me surprised. My friends don't behave like that or they're no longer my friends. Even in girlie bars. You don't demean women. But that's my personal take. I dare say that the pearl-clutchers have not indicated any such tendencies in the past.

The point, as always, is that Franken at least acknowledges that he may disagree but can see how the perception was offensive and apologized for it. How'd that go with the Ohio state senator of boytoy in the office fame? Judge Roy? DJT. The first just mumbled and was sent to his room with no supper. Judge Roy is digging in and filling the moat with crocodiles. And the POTUS has made every indication that he thinks what he said, which was talking about stuff he did, was just fine.

It would be a lot easier to have this discussion (and it is and should be a serious one) without the teatrics of our "conservative" members. We get it. You guys are desperate to divert attention from the various sexual scandals your party is struggling with, including the Molester in Chief, but sometimes you really should just keep your mouth shut to avoid looking like a complete jackass.

If this is all Franken has done, and he has apologized, and he has opened himself up to be investigated, there's nothing more to this.

As was mentioned upthread, unless Franken's tongue rivals Gene Simmons' from Kiss, tongues don't reach down another's throat.

This is a well-known figure of speech.

I'm not spinning any story. I'm looking at the wider evidence.

I believe she believes he tried to French kiss her, it was inappropriate at the time and she believes he did it on purpose in order to get a kiss.

It could have just been an innocent skit and the tonguing was questionable.

Either she perceived the kiss as it happened, or she's exaggerating the incident because people do that.

Why is, "she perceived the kiss as it happened" the only possible option here?

There are a number of reasons to believe she misperceived the incident. The biggest reason is why have no other actors reported similar incidents? Franken surely has done a gazillion kissing skits in his comedy career.

At this point, sorry if it pisses you off, but I am not convinced she perceived the incident as it actually occurred.

It doesn't piss me off. I just think you are over-reaching. Anyway, if he did kiss with tongues, when she didn't want him to, and if he did grab her breast, when she didn't want him to, then these things satisfy the claim of sexual assault.

None of the other things you have brought up (she's a hypocrite, she hates Al Franken, she waited a long time, it's suspiciously timed etc...etc...) will matter even if you are correct about the other things. And presumably the specific points will be the focus of the ethics committee's investigations. We will just have to wait and see what they say.

Huh. I’m starting to see how Franken kissing Tweeden could legitimately be part of a skit. If part of Tweeden’s schtick is basically surprising guys with energetic kisses, her being revolted by Franken, playing the lovable looser, trying to kiss her would be a classic slapstick gag.

Yes, she certainly was playful. Pointing this out is not slut shaming, as it appears Franken did not do anything more than the flirty play that she participated in. I personally think she is doing this to distract from Roy Moore's situation.

She agreed to a kiss, when she wasn't happy with how the kiss was she made sure he knew in no uncertain terms never to do that again and he stopped.

There isn't any evidence he did grab her breast.

There is a photo of him using his extraordinary strength hands to feel her up through the kevlar armor.........

Apparently, joking about sex was a major theme of the USO shows.

You completely ignored the accusation that during a rehearsal he inserted his tongue into her mouth during a stage kiss.
