Ed The Hurricane [or Tropical Storm] Harvey Thread

Parker has been out of office for over a year, right? With the current GOP can't they just blame it on electing a black liberal mayor? Or just a black mayor? Maybe he's Kenyan? Sylvester is an odd name, no?
With Coulter, making stuff up is her stock and trade.

Agreed. And it seems most of them were in vehicles. Shelter in place, while not the apparent solution, is proving to be the better approach than a full scale evacuation.

I'm sure the death toll will rise, but it appears that it won't reach the death toll of the Rita Evacuation.

In 2005 I was one of a dozen or so fools driving into Houston to beef up hospital security as Rita was approaching. I saw the endless parking lot of vehicles evacuating on the highway going the other direction. If that same evacuation had occurred this time and been caught by Harvey the death toll would have been much worse.

Not ordering an evacuation was the right call.

Port Arthur "Underwater" - Harvey Strikes Again!

Port Arthur has woken up this morning to a staggering "40 inches of rainfall over Tuesday". It is completely cut off, with many residents taking to social media to beg for help.

PORT ARTHUR -- The situation in this city 91 miles east of Houston was dire early Wednesday, with homes expected to fill with rising floodwaters and residents unsure of how to get out of the city, reports CBS Beaumont, Texas affiliate KFDM-TV.

Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Harvey was falling in the city. It was inundated with some 40 inches of rain Tuesday, the station says. The National Weather Service issued flash flood emergencies for parts of Southeast Texas, including Beaumont and Port Arthur.

The local refinery is slowing winding down its process, because of the flood danger.

With the evacuation centre being flooded out, and boats being requisitioned into the area together with coast guards; and another two days of heavy rain, what could have been done to prevent this disaster, of people being trapped in their homes, and even on the roofs?

Is it climate change, or is it just a fluke of nature?

Can't believe it, but I have to agree with Chris Christie on this one.

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/chris-christie-calls-ted-cruz-130654432.html

"I see Sen. Cruz, and it's disgusting to me that he stands in a recovery center with victims standing behind him as a backdrop and he's still repeating the same reprehensible lies about what happened with Sandy," Christie said.

"What was wrong was for Ted Cruz to exploit the disaster for political gain — that's what he was doing," Christie said.

Christie, when asked for one word to describe Cruz, simply said: "Crap."

Several other New Jersey and New York politicians have slammed Cruz and his fellow Texas senator, John Cornyn, for voting against the Sandy relief bill but pledging to vote for any package to help alleviate the damage from Hurricane Harvey.

"He should just stand up now and say, 'You know, what I did was wrong,'" Christie said on MSNBC.

Climate Change. If the US had cut carbon emissions in half the year An Inconvenient Truth came out, and halved it again every subsequent year, Port Arthur would never have flooded again.

Seriously though, the warm air from the Arctic (thinning ozone layer) has had the effect of warming the oceans, causing more air to evaporate and precipitate into rain (is the theory by some climate changers). When one considers how vast our oceans are, this is not as far-fetched as it sounds.

But then again, hurricanes are natural and have often spelled disaster.

Texas Governor Abbot has now announced an increase in the number of National Guard to 24,000, 'to help deal with the emergency".

A further 200 boats and 200 vehicles have immediately been made available - Beaumont/South East Texas area.

33 counties are now party of the Federal Disaster Declarations eligible to receive aid, an extra 14, including Montgomery and Orange County.

There is a webpage set up: http://disasterassistance.gov where you can register to receive assistance.

Weather: 15" rain in the area, more for four days to a week to come.

Major flooding to continue for a few days in the Beaumont region (Port Arthur) for up to a week.

Abbott emphasises, 'do not drive your vehicle into water'.

There has been >8,500 rescues and >26K evacuations.

107K power outages.

Rapid Needs Teams are being set up water and waste.

Transportation buses will be helping people to transfer to other areas.

That which has taken decades, even centuries to develop cannot be reversed overnight.
Mitigation of our contribution will take more than a few years to get us back to that level was.

You're talking about climate change? That ship's already sailed. We can't avoid a couple of extra degrees. You're looking at centuries before things settle back to the way they were, and only _if_ we take measures. But since we won't...

Must be sarcasm, right? USA cutting emissions in half in one year- no mention rest of world... Meant to make fun of the overall concept, yes?

I've stopped chuckling myself. I live on a flood plain.

Here's hoping your economic output is high enough to produce a surplus you can use to adapt to the changing climate. Might want to take another look at your emissions output.

Sarcasm that is about as ignorant and tossing snow balls in Congress.
