I just realised the amazing parallel between the film and recent events.

The Nazi's in the film were also holding a legal demonstration, and what the Blues Brothers did was emotionally satisfying but illegal.

It seems like the action had the approval of the city and the county who have their hands tied on removing these statues by the state legislature. Neither the city nor county mentioned an investigation and no arrests were made though there seems to have been opportunity to do so.
 
As an aside:

It was (again) stupid and counter-productive to "bash the fash".

They had the right to demonstrate, and considering the cringy crowd of call-center workers with Tiki-torches, cliché Nazis and overweight men in polyester Klan outfits, dig their own public relations grave.

Ridicule and rickrolling was in order.
 
It is rather idiotic to believe that allowing the Nazi and KKK to protest without challenge would be better than to challenge them. Not challenging them would embolden them even more than they are.

There's a separate discussion to be had about what form the challenge should have taken and who should have done the challenging but the challenge was necessary.

I don't think so. Yes, the fascists cannot have their minds changed but the use of violence to counter them serves the fascists purpose. It gets those on the fence to stay on the fence and do nothing. Peaceful challenges against the violence of the Nazi/KKK/Trumpers has the power to get more people off of the fence to join in the resistance.

a. There is a first amendment issue at play. They should not be banned from holding events. Maybe not where and where they choose, but it should be allowed. Legal principles and all that.

b. Don't beat them up. It's illegal and feeds their victim complex. Also, they are people and some can be brought out of their cult.

c. Apart from that; get creative! Blast them with show-tunes, cover them in silly string, have a transvestite walk next to their march playing the saxophone etc.

It's not hard to make them look dumb and unappealing.

Go to Reddit's r/beholdthemasterrace and see what utter trash they have amongst their ranks. The spotlight is not their friend.
