CNN Doxxes a gif maker

If the President does it, it's news. It's really that simple. The defense seems to be "He's a moron, leave him alone, why dontcha?"

The "Doxxing Scandal" is a diversion. The story is that the President of the United States thinks this sort of material is worthy of sharing with the citizens of the United States.

More likely Stephen Miller - same dude who drafted that white nationalist speech Trump gave at Warsaw. Trump, apparently, barely uses a computer or web browser at all.

If*Trump's such a terrible person*as so many arekeen to claim why don't organisations*like CNN focus on the legitimate concerns over his tenure*in office, instead of this...well,*playground*******

How about they can (and do) do both ? Shocking, I know ....

Tracking people down the way media has always done is now "doxxing". Okay.

Some folks seem to think journalists should put their traditional code of ethics aside in favor of Reddit/Chan culture. No idea why they assume this line of argument should prove convincing to people from a totally distinct subculture, with rather different goals and values.

Remember back when WaPo gave zero ***** about "doxxing" a Newsweek author?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/arch...no-more/817d28bc-2e61-4742-9370-7ae7739947d1/

No one expressed any interest at all until a Washington Post reporter called to ask if, by any chance, this manuscript had any writing in it. Forensics expert Maureen Casey Owens was then hired by The Post to compare the manuscript to a sample of Klein's writing. When they matched, the game was over.

Back then, the internet didn't lose their collective **** about it, presumably because Klein wasn't one of their own.

I suppose it won't be long before we see a thread complaining that the FBI "doxxed" someone who posted a shooting threat on Reddit.

tracking down anonymous internet posters because the KFILE troll did not take the time to learn that what Trump tweeted was totally different than what the doxxee posted and then "reserving" the right to expose him if the doxxee posts something CNN don't like is absolutely doxxing.

It is also indefensibly unethical, that had not stopped the CNN fans.

What exactly is the harm in correctly attributing political cartoons or films to their original authors?

EDIT: Which of the canons of journalistic ethics are you invoking here?

and he had $6million in royalties and no one told him that they were reserving the right to release the information if he wrote something they didn't like.

Bit different, innit?

Klein had to accept the consequences of what he produced and published. Why not HanAssholeSolo as well?

The evidence is that it is impossible. CNN is wrong. The video is at a higher resolution than the GIF, and is longer. You can't add information to a video or image in the conversion. The video that Trump posted cannot have been made from this GIF.

Higher resolution ? ******** 100 points for trying to bluff your way through it though.

One side is the gif, one side is the mp4. You tell me which is which.

Yes, I know that too... ? Why is my sarcasm misplaced ? Holy Crap, the article says:

Reddit user "HanA**holeSolo" first shared the GIF last Wednesday of Trump pummeling a wrestler with CNN's logo imposed on his face. CNN could find no earlier instance of the GIF. The GIF was later edited into a video with sound and tweeted by the President on Sunday.

You have evidence that wasn't the case ? Lay it on us !!

I've checked both in order to compare them.

I don't believe you.

It's really clear the video is derived from the gif. The position of the CNN logo throughout the gif matches the video.

The video was created using the gif, and additional sources, ie derived from the gif, as CNN Claimed

Is it unethical when hanassholesolo called for other people to be doxxed ?

Also, derived from, NOT "totally different"

answer your own question. Seriously, put your own theory through the ringer. I can think of at least 6 million differences, can you?

Their job is to follow the story.

What part of CNN's job is this?

"CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again."

Both sides are a .png.

My whole picture is a PNG.

I wanted Argumemnon to look at the picture that contains an image produced by the GIF, and the image produced by the "higher resolution" mp4, and tell me which is which.

Spoiler alert - they are the same crappy resolution, indicating the mp4 was derived from playing the gif.

Alternate theory - there is a mp4 file with the cnn logo that was used to create the gif, and was given to someone in the WH who add the FNN logo and gave it to trump to tweet. If that is true, it's really news worthy.

(Which is the point I was trying to get at earlier with Argumemnon. But he just wants to accuse me of liberal bias or some crap ... )

I don't believe you.

Of course you don't. You're arguing for argument's sake. You've decided on your conclusion and will accept no other. So anyone who disagrees with you must be stupid or lying. Otherwise you could be wrong, and we can't have that, can we?

It's really clear the video is derived from the gif. The position of the CNN logo throughout the gif matches the video.

Your conclusion does not follow from the highlighted. If the GIF was created from the video instead the CNN logo would still be in the same place. You thus cannot use the highlited to reach either conclusion.

This is such a terrible demonstration of logic that I wonder how you didn't spot it before posting.

Higher resolution ? ******** 100 points for trying to bluff your way through it though.

It's no bluff. Stop acting like an ass.

One side is the gif, one side is the mp4.

No it isn't. Did you even follow CE's link? The two aren't even the same length.

CNN has been around since 1980 and now you are pretending to be all butthurt about CNN.

Thanks much. That makes perfect sense.

You'll note I asked you for lots of information before coming to any conclusions, unlike the straw-man above.

I don't believe you because your claim is obviously not true.

Your conclusion does not follow from the highlighted. If the GIF was created from the video instead the CNN logo would still be in the same place. You thus cannot use the highlited to reach either conclusion.

 nice. focus on the argument.

OMG. Yes, I downloaded the mp4 from twitter, and the gif from CE reddit link. I opened them both in quicktime player, and took a screen shot. THE RESOLUTION IS THE SAME.

Which is why i say you didn't actually compare them.

I know their length is different. The video is repeated in the mp4. There is also additional footage of trump walking away.

As I said in the other response:

I would've thought my comments were pretty straightforward. One poster offers some contemporary data on how the news media is judged by the general public, with a certain percentage of those polled giving the fourth estate (and its related peripherals) low marks for trustworthiness. You chime in, offering the opinion that in actuality the grade should be zero.

Correct. And absent from any of your responses is even the claim that it should be higher than zero.

Some might see such a comment as hyperbole, and maybe you don't actually stand behind what, on the face of it, is a remarkably silly statement. But there is no shortage of people who, contrary to what Mr. Jefferson maintained, believe much if not all of the news media to be...troublesome. Someone who deems them of zero value might very likely be one of that group.

Jefferson didn't say one damn thing in that quote about trusting the media. And I never said it had no value. A defense lawyer and a prosecutor both have value in the justice system, but jurors shouldn't trust either one of them.

Just as it's part of a sporting contest for each participant to try to work the rules and the referees to their favor, I'm under no illusions that the relentless onslaught against the legitimate news media will subside

Again, there are no referees here. And what exactly do you presume "legitimate" even means here?

But theirs is not just a job, it's a duty. Let's please not forget that.

Much of the media seem to have forgotten that.

The video I've seen seems to have some "CNN" frames that the gif doesn't have - and I'm not just talking the reversed order and repeated ones, either. They are where The Donald is getting up and starting to walk off.

You might want to check that. I've not done a total frame dump, though, so it's possible that my gif isn't being fully displayed or something. ...or even that the one I (we?) have has been truncated from the original.

I got my gif from this link, btw:

https://i.redd.it/yf1opxjwlo7z.gif

Also, the following youtube video appears to me to have all the original uncropped and unedited footage:
