CNN Doxxes a gif maker

Did it start out that way, though? If CNN is mocked in a Trump tweet, I see no reason why it wouldn't want to figure out where the meme came from. Even if it's just from a corporate PR standpoint.

It's not from "a corporate PR standpoint", it is from a standpoint of being mocked by one of the very few people that subsection of a giant corporation has no power over, even after spending massive amounts of their energy to smear him: The President of the United States. And then one of their unsavory and dirt dumb stupid "journalists" delivered them an easy victim they could turn on in revenge. I am totally willing to believe that nobody at that disgusting organization got that the GIF was not the same as the video Trump tweeted. They saw it [and the "alt-right" connection] and immediately went into revenge mode, old testament style.

Absolutely despicable. I joked some time ago that Trump should rent some fine real estate in Siberia from Putin and open up a good old-fashioned labour camp for these enemies of "Western values". That would be justice of the kind they understand. ;)

Too bad they downplayed Saddam's atrocities to get that sort of access.
I'm interested. Share a link.

Sometimes getting access to a dictatorship requires a degree of realpolitik. Do you have a better idea?

Don't worry! The reporter is already receiving death threats, and the White House has threatened to cancel the time warner - AT&T merger!

It (CNN) searched out a meme,

Just take a moment to think about precisely how petty that is. As far as we all know they had no idea he'd done anything beside post and potentially make that gif. That's IT. They undertook their digging because they'd had their collective nose put out of joint. This is a professional news association.

Yup. It was petty, and very very stupid. And now the right wingers and the whitehouse are all butthurt over it. Lot of butthurtness going around.

I'm grateful for the wink. If CNN wanted revenge so badly, it could easily have simply named the guy. Instead, it wanted him to clean up his prior posts. Self-important, sure. Heart in the wrong place? Not so sure.

The difference between a GIF and a video - give me a break. Mr. Hole apparently put together an original "meme" - Trump punching out CNN - and someone jazzed it up. The idea was Mr. Hole's, as far as any of us know.

Yes, let us send CNN to the gulags. Totally proportionate, that.

BS. Occam's razor says it's much more plausible that Mr. Hole made a GIF out of an existing video (which is done with a couple of clicks at the websites that provide that service [edit: let me google this for you]) than that someone "jazzed up" the video from the GIF, going to find original content to add including sound. That's what Occam's razor says but "any of us" including CNN - who claims otherwise - don't know. Though it could be that "the Expert" saw it on reddit and made sure that daddy gets something in a quality worth posting. That's actually still my favorite theory.

Eh, not really. Given that Trump's tweets are supposedly official White House communications, it's reasonable for CNN - and other news sites, blogs, and so forth - to look into any info provided. And really, it's part of their job.

I literally do not have any freakin' clue about whether Mr. Hole had an original idea or whether he derived his GIF out of an existing video. I now understand (thanks to you) that it raises questions about CNN's role. But I do not have any special knowledge of how this whole mess occurred. I thought maybe it was Bannon & Friends seeing something with potential and embellishing on it. Without huge technical constraints; digital is digital.

Why do you pretend like you don't understand what is being said? Do you think others can't follow the chain of posts or remember some of your past posting history?

It's just really bizarre

Because the thread ain't about me, and I gave your buddy the benefit of the doubt that we were actually talking about something remotely related to the thread rather than something... oh, I dunno... like my "past posting history"?

My bad. Now we look forward to you addressing something other than my "past posting history."

too bad CNN absolutely **** the bed, huh? Made up pure lies and doxxed the wrong guy, because their new "news" crew from Buzzfeed was posting listicles about the "top ten most outrageous celebrity pants" when the mutts should have been in journalism ethics for dummies?

"sure thing."

Stop playing games. You said "particularly given the fact they have the wrong guy" following "see my several posts explaining that it most definitely is". How is that not saying that they both relate to the definition?

Stop making dismissive BS posts and make a *********** argument.

It took me at least a 24-hour news cycle to even understand what that video was supposed to represent. I wondered, "Why is Trump pretending to punch air, with a CNN logo in the foreground?" When I grasped the details I wondered why CNN would care.

CNN picks on little guy who made harmless GIF = bad. But then, little guy hiding behind anonymity while making bigoted posts = bad, as well.

CNN is not trying to hide beyond anonymity. And the playing field is more level than some posters here believe. A video can go viral while CNN is arguing about how to word a paragraph. CNN wants both the immediacy of the Internet and the meticulous credibility of Watergate-era investigative journalism. It's not there yet. But CNN at least signs its work.

Also: CNN is never going to post this guy's name. I'm on if anyone wants to make a bet on this.

Uh-huh:

Sure thing, Dog.

:dl:

The rule of so doesn't automatically apply to sentences beginning with the word "so". It has to be followed by a strawman or similar declaration.

<facepalm>

Can you not recognise a QUESTION when you see one?

I agree. CNN spent a chunk of money to hire a bunch of buzzfeed writers who ran off half cocked and not only managed to get the story wrong, they managed to write that they "reserve the right" to doxx him again.

then the "adults" got involved and claimed they were withholding his name for his "safety." they gonna out him now?

no *********** way.

He ought to lawyer up and have a fine discussion with CNN about the economics of hiring listicle writers from buzzfeed

Say, CNN "news" fans, lets take a "deep" dive into the "journalist" that CNN hired from Buzzfeed to run their "KFile" "investigation" "unit."

Following the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013, [Kaczynski] played a role in spreading unsubstantiated misinformation about the identities of the suspected bombers when he retweeted false reports made by Reddit user Greg Hughes

Huh.

I guess he dropped out from his online courses in "journalism" too.

I guess CNN was pretty desperate to hire "journalists"* from Buzzfeed.

*trolls
