CNN Doxxes a gif maker

That's 32% more than they deserve.

Indeed. The poll was somewhat skewed by Democrats. Republican and Independents trust were are 14% and 30% respectively IIRC. This poll was from 2016 as well, so I reckon it's quite a bit on the high side.

What about Brendan Eich? Should he have been forced out of Mozilla for taking the same position on gay marriage as President Obama?

Where do you want to draw the line? And do you imagine that the braying mob will stop wherever it is you decide is far enough?

I'm not sure there is a line.

And to say nothing of Richard Spencer, or Milo Yiannopoulos. Doxing Milo like that was certainly wrong as well. He had his career ruined for one dumb podcast.

There was an attempt to ruin his career. His new book is doing quite well, and since he's probably publishing independently now, he'll get a much bigger cut of the proceeds. Career ruined? Hardly.

Does a history of harassing people online or of racist and antisemitic posting change anything from your comparison to Sacco?

Milo can withstand the pressure. Sacco can't. The comparison with Milo merely reinforces the injustice of such internet mob attacks.

Not just anti-Semitic crap but posts disparaging Muslims, African-Americans and other minority groups as well. The kind of stuff you don't want an employer finding out about.

But that isn't the kind of thing that should have professional consequences.

No, it wasn't racist. You completely misunderstood the actual target, which was the sort of cluelessness of people who think their whiteness actually offers any sort of protection. The problem is not that the joke was racist, but that people can't understand ironic humor.

Is there any context to back that up? If that's the case I'd agree with you wholeheartedly that the firing was unjust.

Exactly: there is no line that the mob will recognize. Which means if we let the mob destroy people, then it will destroy good people.

So there's your answer for what's wrong with having people fired and ostracized.

We have to accept that there is nothing wrong with propagating racist memes and racism in general. The leader of the free world is openly racist after all and we need to all be more like him.

That Evergreen State professor found this out the hard way. Faculty and students are calling for his firing because he opposed some sort of "no whites on campus" day. The guy is a progressive. No one is safe from this kind of thought policing.

I think his apology was more about the anti-Semitic crap he had posted.

Indeed:
"First of all, I would like to apologize to the members of the reddit community for getting this site and this sub embroiled in a controversy that should never have happened," he wrote. "I would also like to apologize for the posts made that were racist, bigoted, and anti-semitic.

Im not sure there are good or bad people in this scenario. There are plenty of good people that do not associate with each other because of disagreement. I don't understand why it is important to preserve the ones that associate because a fundamental disagreement isn't revealed. It seems neither moral nor immoral, but amoral.

For one thing, the joke is simply funnier that way. The other way it's just stupid. The principle of charity applies.

For another, that's basically what Sacco herself has said. "Living in America puts us in a bit of a bubble when it comes to what is going on in the third world. I was making fun of that bubble."

The people being fired aren't generally fired because of a disagreement between their employer and the employee. They are being fired because the employer is afraid of the mob. That isn't an exercise in free choice.

I can see Ziggurat's point, but Sacco's tone was anything but serious, which you might expect in a comment about AIDS. I can tell you for a fact that a majority of South Africans would not have found the humour entertaining. You might as well be making ironic jokes about rape and hope people understand your laconic style.

And we are learning that in the modern world being racist, bigoted and antisemitic is nothing to apologize for.

I would like to see something that supports that they are.somehow afraid of mobs rather than individuals making decisions to not associate with their business.

Somewhat relevant I'd say.

Gallup - Americans' Trust in Mass Media Sinks to New Low

"Americans' trust and confidence in the mass media "to report the news fully, accurately and fairly" has dropped to its lowest level in Gallup polling history, with 32% saying they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media."

"Ov
er the history of the entire trend, Americans' trust and confidence hit its highest point in 1976, at 72%, in the wake of widely lauded examples of investigative journalism regarding Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. After staying in the low to mid-50s through the late 1990s and into the early years of the new century, Americans' trust in the media has fallen slowly and steadily. It has consistently been below a majority level since 2007."

What would you expect after months and months of our president whining like a little bitch about the media?

Maybe for ***** and giggles, he should try being an honest and decent human being. See if anything changes.

Hey the bully pulpit works.

But that's a different complaint. Insensitivity to a subject someone is sensitive about is very different from racism.

And if we don't allow humor simply on the basis that somebody (or even lots of people) might be offended, well, we're adopting a heckler's veto. And that won't end well either. It's one thing to be offended, it's another to demand some sort of retribution for that offense.

Good, I really, really hope Anonymous and 4chan utterly destroy CNN as a viable corporation and all the ***** on their payroll.

Hope springs eternal.

I really hope you don't actual believe some teens in their parents basement will "utterly destroy CNN as a viable corporation", or that would we be somehow the correct and appropriate response for trying to interview a racist, bigoted redditor.
