The Trump Presidency

The other day when Trump was asked if he'd testify under oath, his answer was a bit strange.

Was Trump confused? Could there actually a taping system, and is he setting himself up as not having lied? Or did Comey actually claim that he was asked to take an oath?
The journalist flubbed the question. Trump Incorporated the flub into his answer.

Which is why we still have rivers catching fire.

Oh. Wait.

I grew up in what was at the time the highest volume coal producing county east of the Mississippi. And it was only first among its neighbors.

The water quality was so poor that the Monongahela River, a major artery, was barely capable of sustaining any fish at all. Acid waste from the mines all but sterilized the water.

Now they catch record muskie in it.

And the county is still producing plenty of coal.

I watched while clean air and water regulations in that state changed what had been a ecological nightmare into a healing ecosystem with a chance of becoming vibrant once again.

It's far from perfect and far from finished, but it is also far better than it was.

Anyone who has lived through it will tell you that regulations there have made an immense difference. The influence has been significant, and the changes are stark.

And they are still mining coal there.

You may not be convinced, but you are definitely wrong.

This reminds me of some older people in Rhode Island before the Clean Water Act. They new the time of day it was by the color of the river because the textile mills would dump clothing dyes directly in the rivers.

See now they need clocks

Those were the good old days. Like my dad talking about the color of snow, being naturally black. Ah coal the best way to heat a house.

Wonder what has changed since last month. :)

Gingrich on 18/may/17: "Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel. His reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity. Media should now calm down"

Gingrich today: "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair. Look who he is hiring.check fec reports. Time to rethink."

So it hurts our relationships, too bad they all use our money.

A declining industry? That's hilarious. You do know what an all in energy policy is don't you? You give way to new technologies slowly?

tell the IEA how hilarious it is...

The coal industry is in for a period of sluggish growth as global demand essentially peaks in the coming years, the International Energy Agency forecasts in a new report.

IEA expects worldwide growth in coal consumption to average just 0.6 percent between 2015 and 2021 as developed countries continue to abandon the energy source and China's consumption plateaus. That will offset growing demand among emerging nations, particularly in India and Southeast Asia.

"Coal demand is moving to Asia, where emerging economies with growing populations are seeking affordable and secure energy sources to power their economies," said Keisuke Sadamori, the director of the IEA's energy markets and security directorate, in a press release.

The assessment by one of the world's leading energy authorities comes on the heels of a difficult time for coal producers. In 2015, global coal demand fell for the first time since the 1990s. Many coal companies have fallen into bankruptcy as the world remains supplied with more coal than it can use.

IEA expects the turnaround will be anything but spectacular; it projects coal consumption in 2021 will reach 5.63 billion tons of coal equivalent, just barely above 2014 levels.

One month closer to the truth.

You make it sound like the US would be required to be just doling out huge amounts of money. Meanwhile, in reality, even if the US does stay in it, in the end, Trump and the US government wouldn't actually be required to pay even a single penny.

Well... given that I couldn't even find the term "all in energy policy" until after I searched through a number of pages of search results and that example ended up not saying what it was, no, I don't see what you're saying. There was "all of the above" mentioned a lot, though, and being used in distinctly different ways by different parties, though. Coal is declining, not gone. Even at best, it's unlikely to add significant numbers of jobs, regardless, unlike the potential for many of the forms of cleaner energy.

The televised cabinet meeting / kabuki theater is so Dear Leader-ish that it's ridiculous. Equally hilarious and nauseating.

Agreed, what it does have to do with is Trump getting the credit.

Trump is taking credit for TRYING to take the US back to a dying industry and he is getting sued and taking credit for air traffic control technology that was already set in motion by the Obama administration. One of my aviation-related chapters discussed ADS-B long before the 2016 elections. Trump has damaged relations with US allies, not to mention the mess he caused in the Middle East regarding Qatar whereas, damage control came into play. There's much, much more such as firings and turmoil in the White House. Not bad for someone who has been in office only 4 months.

After the first sentence in Trump's answer, nothing made sense.

Does this need/have its own thread?

From their press conference, in addition to the issue of Trump not actually divesting his holdings, they suspect Trump is getting his financing from foreign agents/government. My take is that it is akin to looking at someone with money but no visible means of support.

Document: Lawsuit filed against President Trump

Maryland and D.C. Sue Trump Over His Private Businesses
In a new legal challenge to President Trump, Maryland and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit Monday alleging that his failure to shed his private businesses has undermined public trust and violated constitutional bans against self-dealing.

The lawsuit, filed in a Maryland federal court, makes many of the same arguments in a lawsuit filed earlier this year by a Washington watchdog organization in a New York federal court. But some legal experts said it rested on stronger legal ground because the plaintiffs were governmental entities, which could have stronger standing to sue the president.
To argue they have standing:
Because Mr. Trump continues to own and profit from his business empire, the lawsuit claims, it is unclear whether he is making decisions in the country’s best interest or out of “self-interested motivations grounded in the international and domestic business dealings in which President Trump’s personal fortune is at stake.”

It argues that businesses owned by Mr. Trump divert customers away from businesses the District of Columbia and Maryland either own, license or tax, harming those governments financially.

Trump is going to have to go to the SCOTUS to keep his tax records secret.

His legal troubles are adding up:

Just because it isn't the latest greatest energy source, doesn't mean you try to kill it. That is the "all of the above" energy strategy.

This is the way the establishment keeps people who are outsiders from their little club. It won't work, a person shouldn't be forced to undo their businesses just because they're in government. More proof of the dictatorial left.
