Brexit: Now What? Part III

The DUP don't know what they want. Their manifesto calls for both a hard Brexit plus a FTA and no hard border with Ireland and no checks for NI citizens entering the U.K. This is just one contradiction after the other. On the other hand it is well known that Arlene Foster is one of the many NI citizens who have already claimed their right to an Irish Passport
However, Theresa May is now going to have to please not just the DUP but the 13 Scottish Tory MPs who don't want curbs on Scottish immigration and the 8 Tories in Wales who mainly want access to the single market. If those 21 MPs hold the Queens speech to ransom she has no mandate to enter the Brexit negotiations at all.

The border is the only thing they are not diamond hard on. They want out of the EEA and out of the customs union and their attitudes towards LBGT means they don't like the ECHR either.

They want some magic Brexit deal with a soft border but none of the pre-requisites for it. As far as I can see, the only way that would happen is if Ireland also leaves the EU

I'm totally confused as to what the DUP want since they seem to contradict themselves from one moment to the next. Hardly a surprise I guess from a party whose manifesto was described as 'the Bible but with fortnightly bin collections'

I recommend that you read my link in the post below:

And this is quite accurate too

Those pictures at the top, is that the winner and the runner-up for "Ugliest monster of the week?" :)
“According to our research the most passionate advocates for these so-called ’dinosaurs’ are gullible children, the gays and of course Roman Catholics, who will, frankly, believe in anything.

“We need to throw them all in prison.”
I thought the DUP wanted re-introduction of the death penalty?

You forgot the part about creating a whole new line of business: warming up the outdoors just for the heck of it and turning a profit. (link)

The more shambolic it is the greater the chance of backslash becoming important. Yes, both parties are Brexitards right now but as it becomes clearer and clearer neither is in a position to make Brexit a success (both because of their competing visions and because it is such a difficult task) the more chance there is of someone breaking from the mold and stopping this nonsense.

What you emphatically don't' want right now is what Theresa May failed at so miserably - a strong, stable government, hell-bent on Brexit, come hell or high water.

I think you are right. It is difficult to see any part of the political situation and decisions being made as a strong or positive
way forward at the moment.

This is probably where I got confused, as I knew they didn't want a hard border, so presumed (as that was completely incompatible with a hard Brexit) that meant they were OK with the single market etc.

Easily solved by the Republic of Ireland leaving the EU...;)

Sorry, you're not being serious, surely? Conservative MPs voting against a Conservative Queen's speech, thus bringing down the government? Do you really know what you're suggesting here? That's like voting against your party in a confidence motion. Every Conservative MP knows that stuffing about with this fragile government means Corbyn gets a shot at power.

As predicted by "project fear", inflation is continuing to rise....

UK inflation rate rose to 2.9% in May, up from 2.7% the previous month, official figures show.

It is the highest rate since June 2013 and keeps inflation above the Bank of England's 2% target.

The Office for National Statistics said one of the main reasons for the rise was the cost of foreign package holidays for British tourists.

Another factor was the price of computer games and equipment, which are usually imported.

Manufacturers are sceptical about the benefits of a hard Brexit:

The government should rethink its Brexit strategy, following last week's election, according to the engineering industry organisation, the EEF.

It said without a more pro-business stance, the resulting political instability may force more firms to alter their plans "away from the UK".

The EEF is the latest business organisation to call for a rethink of the government's Brexit plans.

It wants access to the single market to be at the heart of Brexit negotiations.

The French President has tossed this hand grenade into the chaos at Westminster:

Brexit: EU 'open' to change of heart, say France and Germany

French President Emmanuel Macron says the possibility of the UK remaining in the European Union is an option until Brexit negotiations have concluded.

Now I do not for one minute think this is a realistic possibility ATM, but the timing of this little announcement can hardly be intended to make things easier for Mayday and the rest of her Brexiteer crew.

All part of the game.

At the same time of 'inviting' the UK to remain, on the same day - http://www.politico.eu/article/brussels-makes-euro-clearing-a-brexit-battleground/
