Trump - One Term or Two

what depressing news so far this morning. At one point yesterday on the radio a woman was being interviewed briefly and her comment was,'I'm a Christian. I do not think a woman should be a leader.' that is so desperately sad.

Swedish TV-duo Filip and Fredrik made a documentary about what it takes to vote on Trump and some old guy was going to vote Trump only because according to the bible only men can be leaders.

It was written by someone else. It will make a lot of people feel better, but i have no more reason to believe his words now than i have throughout his campaign.

So were the other speeches. The two approaches are contradictory to the point of being mutually exclusive. There is a non-trivial chance that his bluster during the campaign was to a great extent an act designed to win the election. Now that that has been achieved things are changing.

As I said several times I don't think this is very likely, but it is possible at the very least. We might as well expect the worst but hope for the best.

I´ve often thought that very very likely. All those speeches were designed to win votes, plain and simple. I think Trump is not the monster the media has portrayed him as. There is quite a contrast between media reports of his sayings and his actual speeches, if you take the time to listen to them. Most people probably don´t and only see a caricature. I don´t know, he might still be quite evil, but he´s not the typical Republican, in fact it seems that he has hijached the GOP (you can see how many senior republicans oppose him) for his own purposes, and hopefully his mandate won´t be as bad as Bush´s , for example. Who knows, it might actually be good, if he tackles the issue of corruption, after all he has criticised it...

To an extent this was true for Bush as well.

We'll see. I'm prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

What in this man's past behavior makes you believe he is anti-corruption?

I'll grant that it's possible. I've thought about that a lot. It was something he alluded to very early in his campaign (I will be SO presidential/boring), but his actions and pronouncements for most of the duration, and particularly in the debates, did not in any way appear to be anything but his unguarded self. He's expressly stated that he's never pretended to be anyone he's not (his statement in the immediate aftermath of the Billy Bush bus affair), which admittedly means nothing given that I've already stated that i doubt his every word.

Yes, you can only hope for the best. At least the political systems that are in place have certain checks and balances that should prevent Trump from going Ahab. Pity the election process doesn't have those.

Keep dreaming. All three branches of the US govt will soon be dominated by jackbooted thugs. I sincerely doubt the 2018 elections will be clean, as voters will be massively disenfranchised as old white boys take back their country. It's what they've been saying; it's what they will do. Any and all things that benefit white male power are good and holy for what is clearly a growing majority of 'true' Americans.

I've seen that same racism here on ISF in many guises, usually associating the white race with democracy and scientific progress, "the West brought us all good things," and so on. Not unsurprisingly, an unscientific viewpoint, as race has nothing to do with the ability to handle universal truths.

Epic, epic fail.

The far left and the far right are indistinguishable, sometimes...

If you think you are looking st genuine far left sentiment then you are mistaken.

I am somewhat shocked that America elected a hateful moron but do not qctually wish his assasination.

Well, I´m glad in your case it was a joke.

(I still think the far left and the far right are often similar)

I think such politcal catagories are overused lazy thinking and part of the reason for the mess America is in.

I, for one, have no intention of working with or coming together with conservatives. They are vile and this only reinforces it. This only serves to fuel my desire for a decisive cultural war where either they are utterly destroyed or the liberals die trying.

I agree with your statement, and they are seldom useful, however in this case I think they are. Although perhaps it is a platitude to point out that extremists are extremists regardless of their politiacal affiliation...

The state of this comment.

Do you really think all conservatives are vile? Seriously?

"The math'' of the intellectuals didn't seem to work to predict the elections. That's what we learn about it: don't listen to the holy mathematics and statistics of the intellectuals anymore who think they know it all with their fancy statistics based on their holy math. Listen to the hard working men and women, who are not educated, but they are rational, with their feelings. That's the humble attitude the intellectuals of today need to learn.
