Nope. The IRS will not confirm nor deny whether he (or anyone else) is under audit. They only said there's nothing about an audit to prevent someone from releasing returns.

A key point in that letter is that audits of his returns through 2008 have been closed. How about he releases some of those?

I have no doubt that his returns since then are indeed under routine audit. As the accountant's letter points out, they are large and complex. I'd expect audits to be pretty routine for the megarich. But that doesn't mean he can't release them, nor is it the reason he's not releasing them. He just doesn't want the public to see what they would show.

No, Trump's lawyers released a letter from them to Trump saying he was under audit. They did not release any letter from the IRS, which would be the first step in the process. The IRS can't talk about any individual taxpayer, but former IRS officials and others have said that a taxpayer can release his returns to anyone he wants anytime he wants.
