Trump runs for POTUS / Trumped Up! Part V

I just heard Trump express dismay at some invoking the fifth amendment and imply that it is a sign of guilt.

I personally never do that. I accept the invoking of the fifth amendment and I never read into it further. Heck, I have invoked it when an answer would have supported innocence. What about others here?

Really? The reason why you can invoke the 5th is to not incriminate yourself from your own words, you can't just plead it like a fancy "no comment" to each and every question you are asked. So using it to avoid having to answer a question is clear proof that if you told the truth you would incriminate yourself i.e. admit your guilt.

What the 5th does protect people from is the "no answer" being used by the prosecution or the defence as part of the case against or for you and if it is a jury trial the jury shouldn't use it as evidence of guilt.

Or you could be innocent and think that your words could be used against you anyway.

Say for example someone you hate is murdered and you're not involved. You would have to be stupid to admit to the police that you hated that person.

Originally the right was conceived as a safeguard against the use of torture to extract confessions. Still today, surely innocent people invoke it to avoid being worn down or tricked by harsh interrogators or a manipulative prosecutor. Remaining silent, asking for a lawyer and not taking the stand as a defendant is the standard advice for anyone detained in the U.S.

If Donald Trump was smart he would have let the remark about climate change being a Chinese hoax slide. All denying it did was bring more attention to it and prove himself an extremely shameless liar.

Wow, that is one glaring misunderstanding of the amendment. Innocent words can be used against you too, you know.

I doubt I labor under any false impressions. I'm pretty sure he lost $800 million because of the ill will he has engendered from his (so far) successful campaign for President.

If he is such a damn good business man he would have organized and conducted his campaign to create good will rather than damage it no matter what the outcome of the election.

But you see, it is OK because he is a Republican. No matter that Republicans are the ones who want to keep the Cuba embargo.

That's not totally true any more. While Rubio and Ted Cruz are steadfast in their opposition, there is a sizable minority of GOP Congressional leaders who support lifting the embargo on Cuba. Trump himself use to be, less than a year ago and less than a couple of months ago flip flopped on the issue. Trump has no convictions on ANY issue except his own personal agenda.

And now it comes out that he violated the Embargo against Cuba.

Sunmaster - is THIS enough yet? Logger? TBD?

Yea, but it ain't Emails! (LOL)

Why is leverage a problem? Real estate is meant to be leveraged. Also, unlike with security loans, real estate assets are almost never marked-to-market. If you make the payments on time, you don't have to worry about being underwater.

Karen had a friend in Knoxville who was a real estate developer/investor that at one point owned about 53 properties, highly leveraged. Flying high, as it were.

Then the real estate bubble burst and he lost literally everything.

I have a friend in Tallahassee with something like 5 properties, not highly leveraged. He came through the same bubble burst bruised but not broken.

That is why leverage can be a problem.

There's nothing inherently wrong with being leveraged. It's when you are too leveraged, it becomes a problem. Just look at the recent recession, a lot of people were over leveraged in their real estate investments and found themselves underwater when the bubble burst. So little equity that there was no buffer zone when the values dropped.

Plus of course the leverage works both ways as you are beholden to those that hold the lever!

Quite. Levers work both ways.
