Trump runs for POTUS / Trumped Up! Part V

You're right... it is a bit surprising that Trump (and the GOP in general) gets so much support from military people.

Well, I did explain why it happens. The support for the military from the Democrats is the kind you give to children. There there, we love you, and we'll protect you and give you stuff. Adults don't really want that kind of support. They want sincere support for and respect for their mission. They don't see that from Democrats, because, frankly, it doesn't really exist.

I'll note that you didn't address the fact that Trump rarely takes risks with his own money. In fact, I would say he is rather conservative and is risk adverse. His main business acumen is in convincing others to take risks while he risks nothing. Quite the opposite of what you say you are looking for in a candidate.

But let's get to your response:

Failing to take the blame with words is of little importance. Just like taking the blame with words is of little importance. Hillary took "responsibility" for Benghazi and her email server, and what does that even mean in practice? Nothing much.

I see evidence of Trump being able to acknowledge mistakes internally and making adjustments. He covers this up with bombast, but he has shown himself capable of making adjustments. He's not in the poorhouse after all, despite dozens of allegedly bad business decisions. He also seems to be making an adjustment in his campaign, which is very promising in my view. Verbally, he's a loose cannon, but words only go so far. And in the end, he's developing a thicker skin because of the inevitable blowback for his past indiscretions.

I really don't know how one can take the heat for a bad decision without even acknowledging the bad decision. Maybe we just have a different interpretation of taking the heat. If all it means is sitting there and grinning like a fourth grader caught with matches at school, then see Hillary's commercial with the clip of Donald on Letterman. Yes, he can sit and look stupid while being roasted. Is that all you want in a leader? Hell, Anthony Weiner could do that.

I thought he looked quite good standing next to the Mexican President. You could imagine him looking and behaving quite normal in meetings with other leaders (if you squint your eyes).

Again, Anthony Weiner could have looked more presidential in that situation. He only looked good because he wasn't Hillary.

He inherited millions, received family loans for millions, and had his father vouch for more millions in bank loans. That's not success, that's lucky sperm club. His father was a successful business man, donald is huckster and a fraud.

donald trump was born on third base and is telling you he hit a triple and you are calling it a home run!

How did Donald Trump make his small fortune?

He inherited a huge fortune.

Trump is up 19 points among military people and veterans. The support for the GOP among military people always surprises Democrats who think that they can seem pro-military just by uttering a few choice words and by voting to give more benefits to veterans. Human beings, and particularly military people, are not so shallow though that they can't see the difference between a party that truly believes in and appreciates the mission of the military and a party which doesn't. Words alone and giving out more benefits isn't going to change that. It's a bit of a contradiction to say that you support the military but not its mission. Many professionals view their mission as an inseparable part of their being. You disrespect one, you disrespect the other.

And that trump enjoys the lowest support of a GOP nominee by military and veterans in modern history tells you what? Mitt had 66%, trump not even 50% just 47%.

Who is saying they support the military but not it's mission? What does that even mean? By mission do you mean a particular operation in a theater or do you mean the military's role in the total defense of our nation?

You're about the only one.

And yes, he makes adjustments... so he can make all new mistakes.

But lets say you're right, and that he is capable of learning from past errors... Being president means you're going to be presented with a wide range of unique problems. Some would rather have a president who doesn't make mistakes to begin with, rather than someone who will make a mistake, adjust, and try again.

He's not in the poorhouse after all, despite dozens of allegedly bad business decisions.
As has been explained multiple times in this thread... Trump had the benefit of $millions due to family connections (inheritance, loans, credit). You can be a horrible businessman and still avoid the poorhouse if you stat with enough money to cover your mistakes.

It should also be pointed out that its possible for someone to give the image of success without actually being successful. Remember, Bernie Maddoff looked really rich even though his wealth was all a scam. Trump could very well be penniless (or at least with debt exceeding his assets), but still look rich if (for example) he's arranged with his financiers to delay collecting on debt.

Lastly, keep in mind that at least some of his money comes from things like his appearance on The Apprentice. Trump has built his reputation on being a successful businessman. Being a TV star isn't what people are imaging when they think "Trump is a smart businessman".

I thought he looked quite good standing next to the Mexican President. You could imagine him looking and behaving quite normal in meetings with other leaders (if you squint your eyes).
Except of course after the meeting he lied about what was discussed, with Trump claiming the Wall wasn't discussed, and the mexican president saying it was.

Simply "looking good" standing next to another world leader might be a good resume for a cardboard cutout, but not for a world leader.

Of course, the reasoning behind any such support is significantly more varied and complex than you state.

Nevertheless, whether it comes from blind adherence to the cross-eyed lunacy of one party's alleged support for their mission coupled with the other's supposed lack of same, or even thoughtful consideration on the merits of the current candidates, anyone, military or other, who voices huzzahs for Trump can and ought to be ridiculed.

Imagine the difference if Trump were running as a Democrat.

That's all you need to know.

At least one thing wouldn't be different, I wouldn't support him.

In the era of the all-volunteer military, service personnel are a self-selected group of military supporters. They haven't represented anything like a cross-section of America for a long time, and they have their own narrow interests to promote and protect.

Well, the Salon article gives the sincere perspective of liberals. Furthermore, most military people know that that is the sincere perspective of liberals. I don't even disagree with it, but I'm certainly not surprised that the military does not support the party of liberals.

Which is the smallest lead for a Republican among military people and veterans ever. He can't even turn out his base.

He's also losing to Gary Johnson amongst Military - so really they think he's a ****up just like most of the rest of the world.

And that supports the argument that "the military" sees itself as an independent entity with its own interests to advance and protect. What the military sees as best for itself is not necessarily what's best for America.

Is that real??? (Blocked at work)

First off, **** Donald Trump and **** his website. I just spent ten minutes trying to load a 90 second video from his issues page. The page loads, then disappears, takes 13 seconds to load, and disappears again to loop around several times until it finally gives up and displays a "cannot display page error." I am not talking about the video itself, I cannot even get on the page that offers viewers a chance to watch the video.

Yes. It is 100% real.

In the video titled "Working with Congress," Trump begins by saying that he will be very good at negotiating with foreign countries. He then explains his 3-point program for getting Congress to do the right thing.

I don't think you realize it doesn't surprise people that leftist think Trump is somehow a total failure.

Unlike Junior I am :

1) somewhat conservative

2) someone with at least a basic understanding of the principals of business and finance.

Remember when he tried to sue Timothy O'Brien for claiming his net worth was bellow a billion?

That deposition where he basically said "my net worth is whatever I feel like it is"?

Actually financial analysis seems to indicate that he would have been better off investing in index funds and not touching the money.

But, hey, I'm sure you can give us the real ways to measure success and wealth. Is it the amount of supposedly gold fixtures in one's house?

Wow, I love that!

But the Johnson is the only one who thinks the military should be used primarily for defense, and that Congress should have a say in the matter.
No wonder soldiers would prefer to fight for their own country instead of someone else's.

Is billionaire some kind of honorarium? Because it certainly doesn't refer to his financial status.

Trumps' biggest "success" was swimming to the right egg.
That was a bad day for the egg.

Now his father had some substance. A man of respect. That's the last thing one can say of Trump.

Latest Trumpers' talking points about Donald's refusal to release his tax returns: Disclosing tax returns is part of the politicians rigging the system against business persons. Politicians pay highest rates because their income is all from salaries and speaker's fees while business persons pay the lowest rates because they are business people. So it's all about tax shaming.

Of course that ignores the fact that most people running for POTUS are millionaires with income besides salaries and speaking fees, and the public also wants to know about Trump's claims of charitable donations.

Clearly it reveals Trump has indeed been ducking paying taxes, donates to politicians not charities and more than likely is not a billionaire.

Latest Trump news, while jacking up the rent payments he's taken from his campaign donation coffers, many of his top staff were never paid, they were considered volunteers.

Could this guy get any sleazier?

He also claims that he has been paying so much out of his own pocket, but that is a lie:
He has been lending to his campaign, so he is careful not to empty the war-chest so he can repay himself with donor money.

He knows nothing. Nothing. He is like a kid who didn't read the homework and was day dreaming when the teachers calls on him. He just starts regurgitating anything he can think of. The first part of his answer is to talk about the word "cyber" as if the person asking about cyber security was looking for a lesson in etymology, a lesson trump gets wrong by the way. He then pivots to ISIS because they use the internet to recruit so in trumps stumped brain that's the same thing as domestic cyber security so he rattles on about that trying to BS his way through. He concludes with his own poll numbers, a complete non sequitur.
If I came across someone babbling like that I'd want to check them for concussion. This is not the speech-pattern of an unimpaired mind.
