Trump runs for POTUS / Trumped Up! Part IV

Wait, what!?

He against exports now? Is he going full mercantilist in his trade policy? That's a special kind of stupid.

No, only imports. Turns out that every trade agreement is stacked against the US. Once Trump renegotiates them all, imports will be down, exports will soar

I think it was in this thread that someone asked about Trump's birther claims, whether he had ever backed down. I found this on politicfact:
Trump promoted this belief avidly for several years with anyone who would listen. This week [September 2015], Trump told Late Show host Stephen Colbert that he doesn’t "talk about it anymore."

That sounds like he really hasn't backed down. I think the problem is, and Trump is smart enough to see this, the accusation just doesn't work anymore. Did Trump really ever believe it? With someone like Trump, "believe" is a tricky word. As one of my Bosses explained to me once (when I questioned an accusation our department was making against another department on the grounds, "That probably isn't true, though, is it?"):

We believe what we need to believe when we need to believe it. When the situation changes then we believe something else.

I saw that too - could it be he actually doesn't know that Boeing does what he wants - decreases our trade imbalance?

Eh, Boeing outsources a lot of its work, and a lot of its workers probably have concerns that their jobs will be outsourced. Standing in front of that group and telling them that he'll keep their jobs safe will probably get him lots of applause.

Speaking of trade balance, the outsourced work counts differently. The end result (the exported plane) is worth more than the imported work.

Point is taken though about who has the jobs.

Searching through the transcript for an above quote, here's another exchange that caught my eye. It involves Trump getting called out for an inconsistency, but in the end it's just played off as a joke.

BASH: Mr. Trump, just this weekend you said Senator Cruz is not qualified to be president because he doesn't have the right temperament and acted like a maniac when he arrived in the Senate. But last month you said you were open to naming Senator Cruz as your running mate.

TRUMP: I did.

BASH: So why would you be willing to put somebody who's a maniac one heartbeat away from the presidency?

TRUMP: Let me just say that I have gotten to know him over the last three or four days. He has a wonderful temperament.

(LAUGHTER)

TRUMP: He's just fine. Don't worry about it.

(APPLAUSE)

BASH: Okay.

Senator Cruz. Senator Cruz, you have not been willing to attack Mr. Trump in public.

TRUMP: You better not attack...

(LAUGHTER)

BASH: But you did question his judgment in having control of American's nuclear arsenal during [blah blah blah]
-----

Surreal.

Wait, what!?

Figuring out how to triage a presidential campaign when you’re bleeding in every swing state, all of which seem vital, is a difficult enough equation — and that’s without Trump spending time and resources this week in places that aren’t swing states at all. Trump sandwiched one rally in Tampa between appearances in Texas and Mississippi, both solidly red states he’s unlikely to lose. And on Friday, his campaign announced a rally to be held next Tuesday outside Seattle in Everett, Wash., home to a Boeing plant that ships planes overseas — a location that’s well suited for Trump to rail against global trade deals but makes no sense electorally.

He's against exports now? Is he going full mercantilist in his trade policy? That's a special kind of stupid.

Wow, I don't get this. That's my State. I wonder where it's going to be held. I bet it's not going to be in one of Boeing's hangars. There's a few private hangars or he could hold it at the hockey arena.

Trump has ZERO chance in Washington and it is one of the largest exporters in the nation. About 85 percent of Boeing aircraft is sold outside the US. Trump's protectionism in Washington State is likely to go over like a lead balloon.

Maybe he's betting on the hidden lumberjack vote? Which raises the interesting point that Canada is rarely (never?) mentioned when he rails against NAFTA. It's almost like the people he's appealing to with the NAFTA message aren't really concerned about trade policy.

US goods trade with Canada is actually larger than that with Mexico, and second only to China worldwide. You'd think it would rate more mention in his speeches, but it doesn't. Maybe he's afraid of pissing off the maple-syrup cartel or something.

Boy, did Trump's girl Coulter get hammered last night. You know the one who "worships Trump".

Last night on a roast for Rob Lowe Coulter was out and out vilified.

Some great lines from the roast about Ann.

"Ann Coulter has written 11 books, 12 if you include Mein Kampf," Nikki Glaser.

"Ann, you are awful. The only person you will ever make happy is the Mexican who digs your grave" Nikki Glaser

"Last year, we had Martha Stewart, who sells sheets and now we have Ann Coulter who cuts eye holes in them" Pete Davidson

"Ann is one of the most repugnant, hateful, hatchet-face bitches alive. It's not too late to change, Ann. You could kill yourself." Jimmy Carr.

Canada is also the most sued for violations of the countries in NAFTA. Yet, Mexico is the demonized country in his speeches concerning NAFTA because, "Dey tuk 'er jerbs!"

But they do care about competence and temperament. Trump is grotesquely ignorant. But so are most voters. The question in my mind is can Trump for 90 minutes hide his ignorance so people won't notice that he is a lot of hot air. My bet is NO. I hope I'm right.

I hope you're right, too. But we'll see.

Memorable quotes seem at least as important than actual thought, near as I can see. I hope I'm wrong.

Trump campaign's réponse to Clinton calling him a racist is the late senator Robert Byrd. Seriously?

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/08/27/politics/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-kkk/

I assume everyone here probably already knows, but Byrd was a KKK member back in the 1940s. He later apologized for it and called it "the greatest mistake of my life". It's very, very old news but one it seems Republicans never fail to trot out.

That's the standard go-to any time republicans get accused of racism. "But Byrd was in the KKK! No, it doesn't mAtter that it was decades ago and he has long since apologized for and disavowed his actions and has since found support among African Americans. He used to be I the KKK!!!"

Interesting about Canada being the most sued for violations.

As far as Mexico being demonized...even I can hear the dog whistle.

:covereyes

He had a 100% rating from NAACP which is probably more than any Republican can say.

I can't tell whether that's Trump's approach or stupidity on the part of the author.

No, the author was fairly clear. Places where exports are produced should favor Trump's policy regarding trade deals (because, if Trump could pull it off, exports would increase relative to imports).

The error is not the author's, but certain readers'.

ETA:
his campaign announced a rally to be held next Tuesday outside Seattle in Everett, Wash., home to a Boeing plant that ships planes overseas — a location that’s well suited for Trump to rail against global trade deals but makes no sense electorally.

Here, let's spell it out. Areas of big exporters are "well suited" for Trump's trade "policy", but WA is not well-suited for Trump to make a pitch. Nowhere does the author suggest that Trump is against exports, for goodness' sake.

Remember the meltdown Donald had when Obama was reelected?

Imagine the meltdown he will have when he loses.

So you have some ready. They have speechwriters on staff. I'd hire Jon Stewart to come up with some. My bet is he would donate his services.
