Trump runs for POTUS / Trumped Up! Part IV

I would like Hillary's campaign to create some ads focused on Trump and his racism. Little shots of Trump saying that African Americans will vote for Trump and then show African-Americans saying "No we wont" and then little vignettes with African-Americans discussing Donald's racism. And ten finally maybe a wide shot of hundreds even thousands of people saying "No Donald, we're not with you! We're with Her"!

Trump campaign's réponse to Clinton calling him a racist is the late senator Robert Byrd. Seriously?

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/08/27/politics/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-kkk/

I assume everyone here probably already knows, but Byrd was a KKK member back in the 1940s. He later apologized for it and called it "the greatest mistake of my life". It's very, very old news but one it seems Republicans never fail to trot out.

Do Republicans ever bother to ask a black person why approximately zero black people find "but Robert Byrd!" to be a persuasive argument?

That's good, but I want African-Americans to speak back to Trump. I want THEM to proudly say to Trump HELL NO, we're not voting for you Donald. Maybe have it start out with Morgan Freeman or Samuel L. Jackson saying directly to the the camera when Trump suggests they vote for him something like "you must think we're stupid Donald. We see who and what you are Trump". Maybe get Tarantino to direct it.

We need some viral videos making fun of Trump and portraying him for the scumbag he is.

He'll get destroyed if the debates are scored on facts, reasoning, coherence, etc. His team is betting that the debates' winner is determined by notable insults, just as was the case in the primaries.

I can't say that his team is wrong. The American public does not seem so keen about reason and facts.

The Republican primary electorate is not so keen about reason and facts. The general electorate is keener.

Correct. It isn't about reason and facts.

Half of us just want to hear him call Hillary a manipulative, lying bitch to her face; and the other half want to hear her call him a greedy, self-serving idiot.

Infotainment for the win!

But they do care about competence and temperament. Trump is grotesquely ignorant. But so are most voters. The question in my mind is can Trump for 90 minutes hide his ignorance so people won't notice that he is a lot of hot air. My bet is NO. I hope I'm right.

Trump has successfully run a "primary campaign" by peddling bs instead of brilliance. I think it's going to be abundantly clear in the debates that this "Emperor is not wearing clothes".

The problem is that the expectations are so low that the media will call him winner if he doesn't resort to calling her a bitch or worse.

And his supporters will consider him the winner if he does

I'd be shocked if either of those things happened but I've been shocked a lot by Donald this election.

I'd love it if Trump did though. Because he'll just be proving the point that Trump has neither the character or the temperament to be President.

Do you think that this sort of thing would be persuasive to undecided voters?

If it's done right...ABSOLUTELY.

Here's the thing. This really isn't about African Americans. Trump is trying to appeal to WHITE VOTERS that are nervous about what a nut he is. It's important to keep pointing out just how delusional Trump is. Trump has been successfully labeled as a racist pig, minorities know this and he's going to lose the minority vote big. But he's trying to recapture the middle class white vote which is skittish about him.

The worst mistake in my mind is for Hillary to allow Trump in the last 2 months rebrand himself as reasonable and not the con man nut.

But can Trump really play reasonable for 2 months? Can he bite his tongue during the debates when Clinton starts jabbing at him? Or stay off twitter the next time there's some national crisis/tragedy?

Punishing chicks who have an abortion.

The part I find amazing about that exchange is even as he was walking back his answer, he was bragging about how perfect his answer was.

“No, he was asking me a theoretical, or just a question — a theory, and I talked about it only from that standpoint. Of course not. And that was done, he said — I guess it was theoretically, but he was asking me a rhetorical question, and I gave an answer."
“And, by the way, people thought from an academic standpoint, and asked rhetorically, people said that answer was an unbelievable [sic] academic answer, but of course not, and I said that afterwards, everybody understands.”

It is not enough to say "I was providing an academic answer to an academic question." It has to be "I was providing an unbelievable academic answer, in fact people have told me it was an unbelievable academic answer."

If he were president and found himself at a G7 Summit, I really think he would hold a press conference to say that the news media is wrong when it says the progress is slow, many of the other leaders pulled me aside and said how amazing and perfect my plans are. They are worried about what their voters will think so they are pretending to be against my plans, but I even have letters from some of these leaders praising my wonderful plans.

Yes, I get that black voters are already a lost cause for Trump. But I don't think the middle-class white vote is going to be impressed because the Democrats can find minorities who will say that they're skeptical about a Republican candidate. If anything, it makes him sound more like a typical Republican presidential candidate.

ETA: In fairness, a lot of things in this campaign haven't gone the way I would have expected, so I make my comments without any great conviction.

He's trying to have it both ways, I think. It's a double dog whistle. His base will think "criminal illegal immigrants" means all of them, while the good illegal immigrants will have some hope he's not talking about them.

His surrogates are completely flummoxed on how to answer, "What is going to happens to undocumented immigrants already here?"

Unfortunately for the Republicans that candidate is Mitt Romney...

By which I mean he can walk his views back a long way without getting anywhere near being electable.

I don't know. His tweet about Dwayne Wade didn't seem very smart.

Have you noticed that Hillary doesn't really respond to Trump and has allowed him to maintain center stage by himself? Trump is continuing to try and brand Hillary Clinton as a racist. and for the most part Hillary is just letting Trump run his mouth and wave his arms. Which I think is the right response.

I keep wondering what makes Trump's campaign think this is effective? Cause I don't see it.

Wait, what!?

Figuring out how to triage a presidential campaign when you’re bleeding in every swing state, all of which seem vital, is a difficult enough equation — and that’s without Trump spending time and resources this week in places that aren’t swing states at all. Trump sandwiched one rally in Tampa between appearances in Texas and Mississippi, both solidly red states he’s unlikely to lose. And on Friday, his campaign announced a rally to be held next Tuesday outside Seattle in Everett, Wash., home to a Boeing plant that ships planes overseas — a location that’s well suited for Trump to rail against global trade deals but makes no sense electorally.

He's against exports now? Is he going full mercantilist in his trade policy? That's a special kind of stupid.

I saw that too - could it be he actually doesn't know that Boeing does what he wants - decreases our trade imbalance?

ETA: Or, is that just an interjection by the author of the piece?
