This is certainly the received wisdom but I question it. The parents certainly suffered a horrible loss that they will never forget. But what did they sacrifice? Their son made the decision to put himself in harms way. After he was over 18 he was on his own. So the son made the ultimate sacrifice, no doubt. But, honestly, I fail to see the parents sacrificed. Remember, a loss, however horrible, is not the same as a sacrifice.

Actually, it is. In fact that is the dictionary definition of sacrifice. God so loved the world so he gave his only begotten son.

the act of giving up something that you want to keep especially in order to get or do something else or to help someone.

destruction or surrender of something for the sake of something else

I wonder why this Khan thing is alienating so many Republicans when Republicans did the same thing to Cindy Sheehan.

"alienating so many Republicans"?

Pretty sure this Khan thing has many Republican empathizers.

Trump specifically bad mouthed Muslims. The Khan's Muslim son not only died serving this country, he died in an act of bravery that saved other soldiers. Mr Khan is exceptionally articulate. His point was not anti-war it was that Trump is an embarrassment, which he is.

None of that applied to Cindy Sheehan.

That's so bogus. God gave up himself for a weekend because he designed the world so that that would be necessary. That's one of the core inanities of Christianity.

Good parents, like the Khans, raise their kids to be mature, responsible and thinking persons so that they (the kids) can go out on their own when they reach adulthood. The Khans did that. That's my whole point. Their son was off on his own - they had nothing to give up. Again, don't conflate loss with sacrifice.

Which is what the kid did, not the parents.

Silly me, I thought the idea was to broaden not narrow ones appeal.

All of these demographics are losers, and The Donald is a winner. The Donald is winning with the secret demographics and they are the biggest and best demographics, believe it.

You don't suffer loss if your grownup child is killed? The Khans were "good parents". If they had been "bad parents", would they have made a sacrifice?

For goodness sake for whatever reasons society does consider the Khan's loss a sacrifice. Therefore trying to argue it isn't is missing the entire point I. E. By *definition* it is considered a sacrifice.

Part of me suspects that they are simply taking advantage of his situation. Trump's no longer the fearsome, untouchable god-king. He's down, they see a way out of his shadow, and they give him a little kick as they turn and walk away.

No offense, but your argument is pedantic. From a literary perspective and from the way the population see it. Their's is a great "sacrifice" and it has been framed or portrayed that way virtually forever. They gave their son to this nation. And arguing that somehow it's less than that is taken by the majority of the population as self serving, unpatriotic, dishonorable and lacking empathy.

Most importantly, if we were 2 politicians running against each other and if you attempted to rationalize that it wasn't a "sacrifice" you would lose and big.

Surely you can see this.

I judge the older conservative white male vote on what my dad says:

He isn't offended by Trump's comments on the Khan's. He did however say something like: my god the man (Trump) just doesn't know when to shut the eff up. If he doesn't even have the sense to not go after a gold star family then how can he be president??

The comments in there were pretty awesome. It seemed even the GOPers were saddened or disgusted by Hannity.

Let's keep this feud going with a patriotic gold star family by continuing to slander them is unappealing to everyone that doesn't have a diseased mind.

Hannity is the Fox commentator I despise the most...and that's a very hard choice. He combines excessive partisanship with overwhelming stupidity. O'Reilly is partisan but you can just see the pain in his face when he talks about Trump.

Khizr Khan is live in MSNBC right now.

It is possible that he is the greatest hero in US history for preventing Donald from becoming President. I am not being hyperbolic.

He says there is no room for Sharia law in the US because of the Constitution.

I really like this guy. Donald couldn't have picked a more sympathetic target. What a complete dumbass.

To be fair (and to give credit where it's due), the Democratic Party picked him as bait/target. They trolled Donald and got a reaction better than that for which they could have hoped.

Yeah but him being so easy to manipulate is one of the many reasons he shouldn't be President.

Good point. That's a given; a son (or daughter) is killed in the line of duty while serving in the military and the family is said to have "made a great sacrifice." When your offspring sign up for military service you know they may wind up a statistic. It sounds like the Khans supported their son's decision. Some families don't; they go to great lengths to convince the son or daughter to stay out of the military.
