^Yes, indeed, welcome jssimmon! Is this your first TAM as well?

Always interested in research - skeptics are a science minded bunch, so I doubt you'll have difficulty finding cooperative people at TAM, when it comes to any research you are doing. :)

I'm investigating the question of, are skeptics willing to buy people drinks, or are they all just selfish bastards? We'll be conducting research in the bar lab.

I am willing to buy people drinks.

By saying this, however, I may have introduced some confirmation bias. Especially after multiple drinks.

I was specifically referring to evolution deniers. We make drinks out of them.

Although there was some discussion about not blending anyone this year. That's probably a reasonable policy.

Hi! A little bit of both actually. I have most of my formal interviews, but if anyone is willing to talk to me for an hour in person/skype/phone, or answer an e-mail questionnaire, that would also be great.

This is my first TAM, yep. I'm surprised my department is funding me to go, but I guess my proposal was half decent. I've mainly been doing my study of Alberta, Canada area groups, e.g., Greater Edmonton Skeptics Society, and also the atheist groups here that kind of cater to both communities. It will be nice to be somewhere with a concentrated group.

Hi jssimmon--glad you can make it to TAM--I'm sure it'll be educational and great fun. I'm also curious about your research. What aspects of the "skeptical movement" are you studying? It may be too early to talk about your hypotheses, but I (as one of the subjects of your research, I guess) would be interested in hearing about the areas you are looking into and what subjects seem substantive enough for a university to fund a "research" trip to TAM. :)

Well, my main thing is social movements, so that's the lens through which I view skepticism. I see skeptics as doing a kind of pro-science activism, in the same ballpark as citizen science. But, what I'm mainly curious about is how skeptics develop and maintain their identities as skeptics.

I've found that most skeptics don't engage in organized activism all that much, but they make daily decisions to be critical thinkers. Most people probably don't see that as activism, but I see it as a kind of "soft" activism based around self-improvement, argument, and that sort of thing.

Just a thought, but you may be able to get people to sit down with you at the bar and chat for a bit just by asking them, especially if they'll be anonymous. You may have to buy some of them a beer, but it's a very science-friendly group so most of them would probably be game.

Suggestion: bring a notepad. The bar will be too busy to record.
 
As of now, looks like I'll be getting in and out at about the same days/times as krelnik....
