As Numbers pointed out, and my understanding too, is that PAtrick was awarded $8,000 euros from the police, but declined to accept it, and instead took his case to ECHR thinking he could get more money there.

I think he declined to accept the offer of comp, he said he didn't blame the police.

I'm not sure what angle of comp he preferred to follow.

But I believe he got paid $100,000 euros from a tabloid, IIRC?? Can that possibly be true?
Also, he claimed he was misquoted in the tabloid, and toned done his position when testifying at trial.

Lumumba is a bit of a scuz-bucket, imo. Yes he was harassed by cops, and the loss of his bar and livelihood, is a great reason for 'naming, names'. Doesn't mean its right.

And embracing his better nature at this point, means he has to stop riding the the Amanda Knox gravy train.

Plus he's an artist actually, a musician. So he's half mad out of the gate. He's probably got everything so bolloxed up in his head by now, stewing with jealousy over Knox's "celebrity and wealth" (his words), I doubt he;ll ever be able to disentangle things.

It's too bad. he was probably a gentle man before he got kidnapped by Mignini's henchmen.

Not a chance.
Thanks for the rest of the info. He should have taken the money! Poor guy, I do feel for him, but he needs to give over now.

Acknowledged Antony, there is much to be said for copy and pasting usernames. I remember Davefoc saying that when he got a 3 letter name wrong. :o

That's OK - I'm used to it. Although every time I get an e-mail beginning "Dear Anthony" above a quote beginning "On Friday, 27 March 2015, Antony ... wrote:" it makes me throw my hands up.

I once worked with someone whose name was "Charlene". She used to get really agitated when people wrote her name "Charleen" - but she still couldn't get my name right!

It's interesting how the tide has changed. The PG lobby: all they ever had really was an appeal to authority. They took all of the prosecutor's assertions, ignored the defense's refutations, and used that information to declare how incredibly guilty the two were.

Now that the authority has switched sides, they're left with nothing but crazy sounding conspiracy theories and lots of hate.

The pro-innocence side had logic, skepticism (of authority) , and science on their (our) side.

It's been a pleasure lurking here folks. Thanks for all of the great work!
This seems a good idea from dot net

I believe Bongiorno's surprise that there was not even a retrial was genuine. Somehow they knew they had a good chance of another appeal for RS but this came also as a surprise to them. The SC overturning the SC. It really makes no sense to me. What is the point of a 3-stage legal system, if in the end the SC can do whatever they want. Might as well shorten it and just let the SC decide.

But wait, which SC?
hydra comes to mind.

My suggestion is that Italy should adopt rules for DNA evidence similar to those indicated by the American Bar Association. Some very sharp minds worked on them, and adopting them would not embarrass any one person in particular but would potentially save many people convicted on the basis of slipshod DNA profiling. The only idea I have for adding to the ABA standards is to include a line that indicates that such electronic records much be stored for a very long time after a conviction.
It is not always true that a high profile case leads to reform. I hope that this one does.

Yes, like for a period of 5 years after the full term of a custodial sentence, to give people a chance to challenge their convictions when they have their full freedom of movement and to defend themselves.

Chris, its been a pleasure listening to you, planigale, diocletus, and all the other posters who are actual DNA experts, or have made themselves knowledgeable in this process. Its all added immensely to my understanding of the case, and actually made me interested in learning more. Thanks to all!

This extract from TJMK is chilling. I reject the notion that 12 random people should deliver truth. The people should be selected from scientific disciplines, possibly varying according to the needs of the case.

I served on a jury twice in the UK, as foreman both times. Once we got it right and once we got it horrendously wrong. The legal system truly is a lottery and poor Meredith’s family bought a ticket and got no return. I can only wish her suffering family fair wind and a, perhaps forlorn, hope that they find some kind of peace. Their beautiful daughter will live in the memories of those of us who were on the right side of this thing. Her killers will be held in contempt by all normal, decent people.

A heartfelt thank you to Peter Quennell and the other contributors to this site. It has been a beacon for truth and understanding from its inception and I have great admiration for the enormous effort that has gone into maintaining both the content and the integrity of the site.

Content? Integrity?

I guess one out of two ain't bad!

Lumumba was quoted: “What Amanda did I don’t know, but I think she knows why Meredith died.” More of the "she knows more than she is telling" nonsense. If I were in a charitable mood, I might conclude that Patrick is one of those people who just does not get false confessions. However he also said, “Amanda lied to me. I am feeling very bad [about the acquittal].” It would be nice to know what he meant by that remark.

Patrick Lumumba's cash register apparently was "off line" for a good part of the evening of Nov 1 2007. No wonder he couldn't instantly prove with receipts that he was working minute-by-minute at his bar that night. I believe the police and prosecutor had evidence of possible sales tax evasion on him, and perhaps other leverage to get him to eventually keep quiet and publicly deny that he was abused physically and emotionally upon arrest. (Welcome to young Amanda's world, Patrick.). She was younger and more vulnerable. You are older, speak Italian, wiser in the ways of the strong-arm police, and got much more punching than the girl.

My advice, Lumumba, is sue the police for assault and other rough treatment. What's that, you say? Oh, you've publicly exhonerated the police of any maltreatment of you? What, did they serve you tea and cookies the way they claim to have treated Amanda? Well then, I guess you don't have a case against the police.

Your case against the girl will disappear when the ECHR orders Italy to take corrective action to cure the calunia conviction.

There has been conversation on this thread about what now can't be said about Amanda and Raffaele, but I like to think about what now can be witten. For example, Amanda and Raffaele's books can now be published in Italy and the UK. My bet is that both books will be published in both places, perhaps with addendums.

I still can't quite believe it's actually happened. And not even a fudged, "not enough evidence" from the ISC. A definitive, "they didn't do it".

I didn't expect it to be that conclusive, even if they did acquit. Amazing.

I was just thinking that too - would really like to see those books available here.

I can't quite believe it either, it seems like its too good to be true. If thats how outsiders like us feel, I bet Amanda and Raffaele are totally in shock, (but in a good way).

I too, want to thank you for all your excellent posts. You and others helped to demystify the difficult DNA evidence. I know that without your help I probably would have never understood it.

Thanks,

Tim..my real name.

Great point. And I hope the publishers of Amanda's book finally make a good profit. That would be just. I will buy it now, more time to read.;)

Why Patrick Lumumba turned down an award from Italy for his false arrest and detention is a good question. I agree there was a news (tabloid) report that Lumumba was taking the case to the ECHR, but there is no record of it in HUDOC, under the name "Lumumba". (The only such case is a "Lumumba v Sweden" decision of inadmissible.)

Some of us have speculated that police or prosecutor pressure may have forced Lumumba to file his civil case against Amanda. But I don't know if there is concrete evidence of that. Maybe Lumumba came to see Amanda as the source of his problems with the police, rather than understanding the police had targeted him and Amanda, with Raffaele accused to deny Amanda's alibi.
