Cruz steps into the ring...

Ted needs to work on a few problems.

  • Lacks spontaneity, humor, seems phony
  • Resembles Joe McCarthy
  • Neither buff nor handsome
  • Looks like he is sneering a lot of the time.
  • The cocked head gives an impression of, "Oh Yeah?" Argumentative.
  • Pictures of him trying to smile don't show any teeth
  • Denies certain facts (AGW for one) which will eventually bite him
  • Body language is confusing
  • Lacks workable solutions to major problems
  • Speaks in platitudes and hyperbole
  • That pesky not-having-been-born-in-the-U.S. thing
Wait, is Cruz even eligible to become president? I thought he was born in Canada?

He was. Calgary. It will be most entertaining to see all of the excuses republicans will invent to argue why this guy should be eligible.

I demand that he produce his long form birth certificate so I can then claim it's a fake.

We've already seen them. The law is clear. Cruz, Obama and McCain were all eligible. They can see that for Cruz and McCain. So the question isn't the excuses they're going to come up with because that excuse is "it's the law". The question, which has pretty clearly been answered by the ilk of person who continues the Kenyan charade, is why they went to such lengths to to exclude Obama from "it's the law" and were so willing to believe a pack of lies.

Of course, those are the same people who knowingly repeated lies re Swift Boat, so that answer's pretty apparent.

So if you have at least one American parent, it doesn't matter where you were born? (I know McCain was born on a military base).

On behalf of all Canadians, I have to apologize for that.

Perhaps we can send you Bryan Adams and Celine Dion to make up for it.

After Bieber, be grateful that we haven't invaded.

(Yet...What's this we hear about oil in Alberta?)

Yep. My son got his US passport and social security number at about 8 weeks old. One US parent; not even married.

(I take it you never frequented the Birther Conspiracy threads.)

There are plenty of real issues to confound his chances, so the bogus, albeit fun-filled, "revenge birther" ploy is likely a bad idea and could just serve to bolster his image as a victim of the press.

I agree. Hell, Fox News' Champion of the Right and Protector of all that is Holy Todd Starnes has already started complaining about how the "Establishment" is going to try to destroy Ted Cruz. But not by who you think it will be...

Maybe Cruz is not entering the race to win at all. Palin's popularity is certainly waning. Cruz can make a run for the nomination, lose, leave the Senate and step into Palin's role as the darling of the far right. There is still a lot of money out there for him to collect as a speaker. He can get someone to help write a book, maybe he can get a TV show as well. "Cruisin' With The Cruz's" tonight at 9:00!

I always hear this, especially from non-Americans, and when I ask what the benchmark is I never get a coherent or consistent answer.

Oh, that one's easy: your left would be considered right everywhere else.

Also, they're not considered left except by your right.

Is there anyone here who thinks Cruz would be a good candidate? I don't recall a single Cruz fan on this board, there might be but none I'm aware of.

I actually think Cruz is a viable candidate (not to imply he would be a good POTUS or that he would get my vote). He has name recognition, and he doesn't have to change his positions to cater to the far right in the primaries. Also, I don't think he's been in politics long enough to have been involved in any real scandals which could be important if he goes up against Hillary. I think he might at least do well in the primaries. In the general election I think he would easily get the tea party and christian vote (though that's not hard for an R to do). If he plays up his Hispanic side he could get more of the minority voters than Rs usually see. I think he's too far to the right to pull enough moderates though.

All in all I think he has a better shot than some might think. But elections have surprised me before.

Also is it evil from me to hope a reaaallly bad repub , utterly anti science like cruz, get elected , and the american public get a serving so bad that they wise up and try to get moderate in congress / senate / POTUS ?

I am unsure how you'd expect things to change from that when a fair chunk of voters that cast ballots, do so based primarily either on partisan loyalty, or partisan positions.

I wasn't a fan of Ted pushing for the government shut downs the way he did.

If the Tea Party nutjobs get behind Cruz, he might get some momentum in the early primary/caucus states. He's too wacky to be a serious contender for the nomination, but if he stays in the race all the way to the end he might get enough delegates to be able to play kingmaker. That's the best he can hope for, IMO.

Much as it pains me to say this, he is actually a pretty smart guy. Sure, he didn't have the same accolades as Obama when he left Harvard Law, but he did leave with a degree. I think he can handle a book without as much struggle a Palin.

And I think he is smart enough to see that he could clean up where she has merely done well. His fall back position is very solid.

This is my fear as well. He is smart enough to know what he needs to do. I hope that his ideas are so repugnant that he will be beaten on that basis, but if he strikes a sympathetic chord I could see him in the hunt. Really depends on how bloody the primaries are.

I don't think Hillary is a very strong candidate. A crazy like this as the republican candidate worries me.
