Future of the Forum

Darat was the forum admin that did most of the upkeep along with the mods. From the vitriolic emails he sent...
Having taken in the emails that Darat posted, your credibility is nil.

At least jref is consistent on one point: longtime, hard-working volunteers are to be treated like dog ****.

My son belongs to Something Awful and I guess they have a policy of if you get "banned" you have to pay $10 to come back and the money goes towards running the forum. I'd like to see something like that, and also for people who've been banned here. Pay $10 and we'll lift the ban.

I sort of like that but I bet it leads to people accusing you guys of having an incentive to ban people. Besides, some of these banned posters need to be charged $500! Hey - we could have a tiered "unbanning" fee schedule which depends on how egregious your violations were. Ha.

I dunno... There are certain banned members where, if they were allowed to return, I'd leave. So fast.

Well, yes. There are some whose crimes were too egregious to be allowed back in, even for $10.

Never heard of such a forum setting. I find it weird as it somehow amounts to a rule like: Banned rich trolls can troll again, ad lib (aka "Paypal trolls").

May I blame you?

Just because they paid $10 doesn't mean they won't get banned again. And if they modify their behaviour, well that was probably the desired result in the first place!

:) A two way auction. Bid to get unbanned, or to keep some banned member banned who is bidding to become unbanned...

Theres a name of a band in the there somewhere...

There are certain poster for whom, I have no doubt, I could raise $5,000 to keep banned.

I suggest an auction. That guy UncaYimmy would pay half a million.

edit: uh, this moves fast. :)

Icerat is actually the one who brought up the privacy issue TO the JREF. It isn't something they had insisted on, or even mentioned.

Darat also brought the privacy issue up to the JREF. Icerat might have done so first, but if so, only because Darat and the rest of the admins weren't informed of what was going on until later.

That's not how you blame Lisa, asking politely.
This is::lfault2

Although I don't agree with the assessment I believe the JREF considers their emails to me to be confidential and I did agree to keep all such communications confidential so I will not be posting anything the JREF staff/agents sent to me or commenting on it.
Thank you, Darat. I think there is a need for greater transparency. Please, stay on the job (if you can), your role as the forum liaison may be important for its survival.

D. J. Grothe (the current president of the JREF) 's email address is: djgrothe@randi.org, you can use this page to contact him (see here).

I would like to make a proposal, namely that the person in charge of the forum (Darat, real name David I understand) starts a donation drive on this forum relatively quickly (about platform, see this jhunter post). Only those who can afford it should give. The money raised could be used both to (technically) improve the forum hosting (with hopefully icerat's help), and to possibly help the JREF pay any legal fee (probably not very high, because it is not responsible for what members say in this place) it incurs because of the forum. I then propose that some influential forum members ask the JREF to reconsider.

I think Emily is only meaning if the forum was going to stay with the JREF, and she is to a large extent correct that would be an approach that would result in a forum much more closely aligned with the JREF mission.

But it ain't staying with the JREF so I think this is more an interesting thing to discuss rather than having direct bearing on the new place. Mind you ideas like Emily's will have to be considered because the new-forum will need to raise money somehow.

Some have already offered regular contributions. My employer (a large multinational group of science laboratories) might be willing to donate, or place banner ads or some such, as long as no woo-woo kook crack-pot advocacy can be reasonably associated with their name.

Maybe I'm naive. I don't think funding will be a problem for at least the first 2 years. After that, it's sink or swim. I'm in for 2 years at least.

A true Scotsman troll, if rich, can just go through an endless cycle of bans and paid un-bans. Or it isn't a true troll. :p
